27/07/22 ~~ Zine Update

Hi folks,

Unfortunately, due to a lack of submissions, issue #1′s release date will have to be postponed indefinitely. Hopefully in the coming month or so I will be able to build up the issue enough to have it released digitally, with print copies being made upon request.

A big thanks to the lovely people who have already submitted, and an apology as well. If you are comfortable with the wait, I greatly look forward to still using your submissions at some future date.

At this time, the submission form remains open to anyone who would still like to participate, with no definite deadline.

24/06/22 ~~ Zine Update

Hi folks!

Since this is the first issue of the zine, I’ve decided to go soft with it in the interest of garnering more attention for the zine and giving creators more time with the prompt. That just means that the June 29th submission ‘deadline’ has been extended. I will not have access to a printer from July 9th-23rd, so I will spend that time editing the pages while the submissions can still trickle in. Ideally, all submissions should be in by the 9th, but none will be denied until starting about the 19th. It all depends on how long the editing process will take, so in any case, feel free to shoot me an email! The actual posting and printing of the zine will happen towards the end of July.

TOS: Shore Leave

So I recently read about the 'curse' that seems to plague st zines... so I'm here to essentially vouch for my existence (lol)

I know I use 'we' but it's really just me running the show for now (hi!)

My name is Pavlo (they/them), and while this is my first zine, I've had a few years experience dealing with online transactions and product dispatch via my 'star seller' ebay account, so I swear I'm good on the financial aspect and won't run with your money 😭

All printing is done on site at my home, so there will be no dealing with pre-order rigmarole and third party printing. It will be a small and manageable zine.

Digital PDFs of issues will be uploaded and posted for free before each issue's payment/refund deadline, so if you don't like what you see, you can withdraw your order no problem.

My goal is to have this be a very collaborative work, so while I'll be in charge of most if not all the production for now, I heavily encourage input from creators about how they'd like their work to be presented/laid out or if they have any suggestions for the zine. Dates and deadlines will also for the most part be very flexible.

Issue #1 Theme: Shore Leave

The possibilities are endless!

Submissions don't have to be about that episode, of course. The theme can relate to shore leave as a general concept across all the Star Trek series.

Here are some prompts to get those creative juices flowing:

Fic, a classic. The crew leave ship for a planet they've never visited before. What is it like? What is there to do? Does anything particularly noteworthy happen to the crew on their days off?

Visual art: how about a digital oil painting documenting a stunning view on the planet's surface? Or maybe a comic strip about a particularly funny/awkward occurrence?

Physical media: what would a creature on the surface look like as a sculpture? How about the clothing of the planet's native inhabitants?

Song: if something happened that got space bards singing about the event for generations to come, what would that song read/sound like?

Video: how about a fancam of the episode? Or maybe a photo comp of all the instances of shore leave across the star trek series?

Captain's log: how would an unofficial log of an event that happened on shore read?

Welcome to Spirkanalia!

➡Spirkanalia is a Star Trek fanzine made to pay homage to all the vintage trek zines of the 60s and beyond! Now, without the fear of harsh censorship, we can proceed unimpeded, this time with a modern twist...

➡It is a quarterly 8.5 x 5.5" zine that will be about 10 pages in length (it's a small one!), however, that may change depending on the volume of submissions received. It will be staple-bound and printed in black and white, occasionally with coloured paper pages for accent. If you are interested in purchasing a physical copy please consult our purchase request form.

➡If you're interested in submitting, each zine will have a theme to follow. Submissions are not limited to any one show, the entire Trek universe is up for grabs. Pretty much all art forms are accepted, consult our artist submission form for more details.
