The things you create don’t have to make sense! They can be messy and wild! They can be confusing and strange! They can be ugly and weird! Stop tethering your sense of creativity to what other people will accept. You deserve to create without inhibition.

if you see this random post appear on your dash and you’re feeling down or unsure of your writing, this is a sign to try and finish whatever it is you are working on, in whatever pace you find comfortable. one day this particular story you’re working so hard on, struggling with, loving and hating as you try to make the very best of this particular project, could one day be someone’s favourite story they return to, time and time again <3

I'm always going to suggest reading books (especially within your favourite genres, as well as attempting some non-fiction too) to those who really want to write them, not out of any elitist "one must only read books" stance that I tend to see circulate, as though thoroughly enjoying reading somehow means we are incapable of enjoying anything else, but it would seem odd, to me at least, to exclude the importance of reading when interested in wanting to write

my hot take is that if you want to write a book, you need to read books

I was deliberating including coffee in my worldbuilding until I remembered they have coffee 10,000 years in the future on a desert planet inhabited by drug-spewing worms, robin hobb has coffee in her fantasy books, oh, and Bilbo serves it to Thorin's company on their arrival when they eat him out of house and home so,
if you ever find yourself worrying can x really be in my story, yes, yes it can. if someone tells you "how could there be coffee in your fictional world?! how can your character have silk if this is not China? How could there be a garden of orchids? Chamomile tea!? I don't think so!" kindly refer them to the millions upon millions of nonfiction books you're not writing and put x in your story anyway :)

Thinking about Christopher and Helimire, and how his devotion to Helimire as the city-state it is, is his biggest flaw and could be his downfall if he didn't play his cards right. How if Helimire was a person he'd do anything for that person no matter the cost, because he already does that for the city at this point. It's his life and his everything. The world could burn around that city-state but if Helimire was still standing, that's all that would matter to Christopher.
Then it got me thinking about what would a humanized personification of Helimire look like? For Christopher it's a strong and fat ginger man with pale freckled skin who praises him for the good he's done for the city and Christopher weeps at the feet of this man, for how much he loves him and holds pride for this man.
Helimire as a city is like a god to Christopher. Who already is a Godling. Who is older than Helimire by a lot, but who treats the city as if it is some ancient being that is bigger and older than himself.

underrated fantasy/sci fi tropes
protagonist drinks some magical substance that either tastes different to everyone or tastes different every time you drink it
just got this cool power…. would be a shame if it corrupted me
on the other hand, letting marginalized characters be all-powerful without getting corrupted
magical doors or gateways (ie you have to close the door behind you or else monsters will follow, walking beyond a threshold into a completely different environment and turning backward to see no sign of the place you just left)
spells or curses with weird time constraints or conditions (ie you only have power in the moonlight, you have until the solstice to complete the task)
character you thought was kind of a loser comes into some ability that completely turns the tables
women older than 35 having magical powers and not being evil and/or being wise or badass mentor figures
superorganism hive minds
there are both upsides and downsides to immortality; conditional immortality (ie you’re immortal except you can die under xyz condition)
prophecies that wouldn’t have come true if the protagonist didn’t try so hard to avoid it
mentor you thought you could trust shows their morally ambiguous side either to protect themselves or protect their mentee
person you thought was evil does one good deed for the protagonist, for whatever reason
random background character was actually guiding or spying on the protagonist the entire time
that’s all i could think of for now but feel free to add more :)

I don't know if it exists (probably does, I just need to look for it) but a thing I wanna try out is in character ask games, as in someone will send in a question from a list like regular ask games but it's paired with a character or characters to answer the question rather than the writer
