You come to crowned in a nest of tree roots, thick and dark with age.
You think, briefly, that you should not be able to see them. The roots. You’re underground— though you abhor it, where else could you be that smells so strongly of dirt? However this came to be, it ought to be dark. A natural consequence of being underground, where there should be no light.
But that soft blue glow comes from yourself. Or something under your skin, or entangled deeper, maybe, so deep to become inseparable from you and it and so you are now we but still you.
You have been buried ready for battle. Your fist closes on the shaft of a glaive. Your other hand holds—
A drone. Maybe. Something. It has the same resonance you do, a glow that speaks to your own. It chimes and you chime back in confirmation. The single eye is as green and bright as your own, the casing around it as bleached-white and organic as your own armored shell.
Another chime. Your antenna lift and current sparks between them.
Eyes up, Guardian, the drone tells you. It is time to go.
And you do. You go.

It's... a lonely thing, his patrol.
This half of the world is asleep. As it should be, of course, but Nightlight...
Doesn't. Sleep, dream, any of that. It would defeat the purpose of a Nightlight if he did.
But he watches. He sees the Tall Ones tuck in their Small Ones, sees them lull them to sleep with stories or songs, or simply just holding them and rocking, the way he used to bid his MiM to rest.
