Could you reblog this if you enjoy seeing your writer friends ramble about their wips on your dash?

Can we all agree that, as worldbuilders, we aspire to fascinate?
When we watch powerful scenes, words describing battles, quotes that send shivers down our spines; We wish to replicate that.
The way our hairs go on end when one side of the conflict pulls a wildcard so unexpected we can't help but shake our fist in the air and exclaim.
The way we feel the struggle of the heroes, when words are no empty threats - they are facts, they are deeds, when they show the spirit of the one saying them is of the hardest mithril, unbendable and undefeated.
We all wish for our audience to feel the same way when we show them our creations.

A character's strengths can be whatever you like, but it's their weaknesses that make them interesting.

I wanna talk more about superpowers that come with side effects.
Give me telekinesis that causes migraines! Super strength that leaves the user bone tired and prone to narcolepsy! Fliers who need to be careful about pressure changes! Invulnerability that comes with numbness and loss of dexterity! Shape-shifting that hurts!
I want characters who need to be careful with their powers and face consequences when they over-exert themselves.
All of this was to say I want a character pushing their limits during a fight to then collapse as soon as the danger is out of the way <3

You know, when I see fictional characters who repress all their emotions, they're usually aloof and very blunt about keeping people at a distance, sometimes to an edgy degree—but what I don't see nearly enough are the emotionally repressed characters who are just…mellow.
Think about it. In real life, the person that's bottling up all their emotions is not the one that's brooding in the corner and snaps at you for trying to befriend them. More often than not, it's that friendly person in your circle who makes easy conversation with you, laughs with you, and listens and gives advice whenever you're upset. But you never see them upset, in fact they seem to have endless patience for you and everything around them—and so you call them their friend, you trust them. And only after months of telling them all your secrets do you realize…
…they've never actually told you anything about themselves.

Matthew (if I got the name correct) for question 2!
You did get the name right, thank you
2. What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
Matthew was raised by a businessman and farmer kind of hybrid thing, as most humans do in Sovereignsboard. That means the amount of time he sets aside for self-care varies by season, by wether he was expected to do manual labor or field work.
During spring and fall, for planting and harvesting, he would only really expect to scrub himself down with soap and water, twice a week at most. Even when he becomes a monk, his self-care slips a bit during those seasons and he gets antsy for work.
During the summer and winter, however, he gets particular with how he presents himself. These were the seasons his father expected him to act as the face of the store, and instilled the idea that he must be presentable. He still scrubs with soap and water, daily this time, and if he has access to it, will lightly scent the water. He also shaves daily, typically in the morning after bathing so it’s not early enough that he risks getting a 5 o’clock shadow. When he becomes a Monk, the job description includes travel occasionally, but even when he does, in these seasons he brings soaps and scents.

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
