Be sure to make a choice of accommodation that is comfortable and affordable. Safari accommodation is often categorized in to 3; budget, moderate and up-market accommodation. Safari companies: be sure to deal directly with the safari company rather than some broker or re-packager in Europe or the USA. With the Ugandan safari companies you can be sure they know what they are talking about rather than the re-packager who has probably only read about safaris in Uganda. Payment: Most countries in Africa are cash economies, so African safari companies usually take payments in cash rather than credit card. So if you are given the options of either cash or credit card, be sure to find out how the transactions are made, and what the charge for money transfer will be. In a way whether you pay the Uganda safari company directly or deal with a local tour company in your country which will in turn connect you to a local agent in Uganda, the cost will probably end up being the same. Do safari companies give refunds? It is advisable to find out if the safari company will give you a refund of the deposit in case your plans change. The deposit for most tour companies is 30% of the total fee, and the rest is paid either upon arrival or before. Most reputable safari operators will give you a refund less any permit or reservation charges they could not recover. Permits are usually resold and most of the permit cost refunded to you. Nakuru... As you approach the Great Rift Valley from Nairobi, the scenery changes and you are thrust into a world of idyllic vistas. Nakuru simply means “Dust or Dusty place”. Don’t let the word fool you because you will be amazed at the brilliant sites the place has to offer. Nakuru and the regions around are endowed with cosmic resources that attract both domestic and foreign tourists and has ideal view points such as; Lion hills, Baboon cliff, and Out of Africa hills, others include Enasoit hill, Honeymoon, Lion hill ridge, waterfalls-Masalia, and very unique vegetation. Rift Valley views The economy of Nakuru depends mainly on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Tourism is the most important economic activity in Nakuru.  Here are the major tourist attractions;  LAKE NAKURU NATIONAL PARK 140km northwest of Nairobi, the park lies in Central Kenya in Nakuru district of the Rift Valley Province. The volcano was formed about 200,000 years ago. The 12 x 8 km caldera formed 8000 years ago. Menengai is one of the best-preserved calderas in the world. The crater floor is ideal for hiking. The summit is accessible by foot or vehicle. There is geo—thermal prospecting in the crater for energy. Menengai Crater  Attractions Crater walk, Few places in Kenya to see the South African National flower, the Protea growing wild Bird watching Lord Egerton Castle Lord Maurice Egerton built the castle hoping that the woman he fell in love with would agree to live in it, but she turned his proposal down and broke his heart.  She had turned down his first offer to stay in his first six-bedroom house calling it a chicken coop and when he built the castle, she did not accept his proposal either. The castle is located about 12km from Nakuru Town. The castles’ design is beautiful both in and out. It sits on beautifully landscaped land. It is one of the places to visit in Nakuru County for a taste of aristocratic lifestyle of the last century. Lord Egerton Castle Ol Donyo Eburru Ol Donyo Eburru is the highest peak of Mount Eburru. This attraction is part of the Eburru ecosystem, which spreads over Nakuru County. Eburru Forest has a variety of flora and fauna species. Indigenous trees weave a maze offering shade and habitat to the hundreds of birds. Other wildlife animals to see are giraffes, bushbucks, gazelles, waterbucks, monkeys, buffalos, bongos, baboons and leopards.     Kigio Wildlife Conservancy This community owned conservancy is in Gilgil. It has about 3,500 wildlife animals that include buffalos, elands, waterbucks, leopards, Rothschild giraffes, hyenas and hippos. Makalia River and Falls The Makalia River rises in the south-west of the Mau Forest, and is a key source of water for Lake Nakuru. It is one of three major rivers, along with the Njoro and the Enderit, which also originate in the Mau Forest complex and drain into the lake, together with treated water from the town’s sewage works and the outflow from several springs along the shore. The falls area is usually a scenic site where the roar of rushing water provides a background to birdsong and the occasional impala grunt or baboon bark. When dry, as now, it is eerily quiet, and provokes the question: how much damage has been done to the Mau ecosystem (through uncontrolled deforestation) to cause the drying up of this (and other) once perennial rivers?   Makalia Falls and river Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site The famous Leakey family discovered this Neolithic site in 1927, and excavations began in 1937 to reveal fossils dating back to 1500 B.C. They found tombs, human settlements and skeletons of 19 bodies. These and other fossils are preserved in the Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and Museum. Hyrax Hill   Kariandusi Pre-historic Site The Leakeys discovered this site in 1928. The fossils excavated hand axes of the Stone Age period, a molar of an elephant with a straight tusk, algae skeletons and knives. This attraction is a short distance from the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in Gilgil. Kariandusi Pre-Historic site Olkaria Hot Spa Olkaria Hot Spa is adjacent to Hell’s Gate National Park. After a safari in the park, walk into the spa for another round of thrilling fun. This spa has naturally heated water, cooled to a temperate fit for human skin. The large outdoor spa attracts dozens of adventure seekers daily. Baboon Cliff. The Baboon cliff and its lookout point offer finest view across the lake and over the shimmering fringe of pink around the lake's white shores. There is a nature trail of 100 meters long which winds its way along the cliff. Picnic tables and lavatories are available. You may spot rock hyrax at the top of the cliff near the picnic site and baboons in small trees hanging over the cliff and awaiting for food. The Baboon cliff is covered by euphorbia, acacia and olive trees. Out of Africa Hill and Lion Hill In the southern part of the the park, the Out of Africa hills have spectacular views along the edge of the towering black Baboon cliff and it is the greatest sundowner spot of the park, specially for people staying at the nearby Naishi house. Note that the hills offer no facilities. The Lion Hill is located at the eastern part of the park and the hill is fully covered by strange cactus-like trees, the Euphorbia candelabrum (known also as candle tree), forming the biggest euphorbia forest in Africa and a unique preshistoric forest. Maasai: the authentic people of Kenya - a tourist favorite   We are online-Maasai Men "It takes one day to destroy a house; to build  a new house will take months and perhaps years. If we abandon our way of life to construct a new one, it will take thousands of years", Maasai belief. The Maasai tribe is the most authentic ethnic  tribe of Kenya. The Maasai tribe (or Masai) is a unique and popular tribe due to their long preserved culture. Despite education, civilization and western cultural influences, the Maasai people have clung to their traditional way of life, making them a symbol of Kenyan culture.   Maasai, Kenyan Heritage Maasai's distinctive culture, dress style and strategic territory along the game parks of Kenya and Tanzania have made them one of East Africa's most internationally famous tourist attractions.. Maasais speak Maa, a Nilotic ethnic language from their origin in the Nile region of North Africa. History of the Maasai Tribe It is thought that the Maasai's ancestors originated in North Africa, migrating south along the Nile Valley and arriving in Northern Kenya in the middle of the 15th century. They continued southward, conquering all of the tribes in their path, extending through the Rift Valley and arriving in Tanzania at the end of 19th century. As they migrated, they attacked their neighbors and raided cattle. By the end of their journey, the Maasai had taken over almost all of the land in the Rift Valley as well as the adjacent land from Mount Marsabit to Dodoma, where they settled to graze their cattle.   Maasai Culture The Amboseli National Park, Nairobi National Park, Masai Mara Game Reserve, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, and Tsavo National Parks in Kenya and the Manyara, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Serengeti parks in Tanzania all stand on what was once the territory of the Maasai tribe. Today, the Maasai people live on a smaller piece of land in the Kajiado and Narok districts, surrounded by these now Kenya's fine game reserves. Many practice nomadic pastoralism, while others have been absorbed into modern day jobs working in tourism where they showcase their culture to visiting tourists. Maasai Women dancing   Maasai Culture The warrior is of great importance as a source of pride in the Maasai culture. To be a Maasai is to be born into one of the world's last great warrior cultures. From boyhood to adulthood, young Maasai boys begin to learn the responsibilities of being a man (helder) and a warrior. The role of a warrior is to protect their animals from human and animal predators, to build kraals (Maasai homes) and to provide security to their families.   Maasai Initiation Through rituals and ceremonies, including circumcision, Maasai boys are guided and mentored by their fathers and other elders on how to become a warrior. Although they still live their carefree lives as boys - raiding cattle, chasing young girls, and game hunting - a Maasai boy must also learn all of the cultural practices, customary laws and responsibilities he'll require as an elder. An elaborate ceremony - Eunoto - is usually performed to "graduate" the young man from their moran and carefree lifestyle to that of a warrior. Beginning life as a warrior means a young man can now settle down and start a family, acquire cattle and become a responsible elder. In his late years, the middle-aged warrior will be elevated to a senior and more responsible elder during the Olng'eshere ceremony. Maasai children enter into a system of "age-sets" with peers where various life stages, such as circumcision, are marked with ritual and ceremonies. At the age of 14, girls are initiated into adulthood through an official circumcision ceremony known as Emorata.   Maasai Initiates Presently, the female circumcision ritual is outlawed in Kenya and its use is diminishing from the Maasai women's culture. Young Maasai girls are still taught other functional roles like how to build houses, make beadwork, and cook and clean their homes, by their mothers and older women. When they come of age, their parents "book" a warrior from a respectable clan as an appropriate husband for their daughter. Maasai Homes Since the Maasai lead a semi-nomadic life, their houses are loosely constructed and semi-permanent. They are usually small, circular houses built by the women using mud, grass, wood and cow-dung. The men build the fences and sheds for the animals.   Maasai Home built by women Maasai and their cattle The Maasai tribe has a deep, almost sacred, relationship with cattle. They are guided by a strong belief that God created cattle especially for them and that they are the sole custodians of all the cattle on earth. This bond has led them into a nomadic way of life following patterns of rainfall over vast land in search of food and water for their large herds of cattle. The Maasai tribe measures wealth by the number of cattle and children one has.   Maasai Worrior grazing Maasai clothes, dressing and beauty Though they traditionally dressed in animal skins, Maasai woman with beaded jewelry - everyday Maasai dresstoday, typical Maasai dress consists of red sheets, (shuka), wrapped around the body and loads of beaded jewelry placed around the neck and arms. These are worn by both men and women and may vary in color depending on the occasion. Ear piercing and the stretching of earlobes are also part of Maasai beauty, and both men and women wear metal hoops on their stretched earlobes. Women shave their heads and remove two middle teeth on the lower jaw (for oral delivery of traditional medicine). The Maasai often walk barefooted or wear simple sandals made of cow hide. Maasai food All of the Maasai's needs for food are met by their cattle. They eat the meat, drink the milk and, on occasion, drink the blood. Bulls, oxen and lambs are slaughtered for meat on special occasions and for ceremonies. The by-products of the animals - skin and hides - are used as bedding while cow dung is used for building (it is smeared on the walls). Hidden Gems of The Rift Valley

Away from the plus coast line is one of the most attractive geographical features of the country, there is more than half a million square kilometers of absolute marvel waiting for you if you look deeper into the country. The Rift Valley has so much to offer that we wouldn't exhaust its marvels in a whole book. Here are some of the uncommon/unknown/unexplored sites that will leave you breathless... Iten View Point Iten is a small town located about 50km north of Eldoret town. Although it is well-known as the home of Kenya’s world-class athletes, it also owes its reputation for great viewpoints of the Rift Valley, a geographical feature in East Africa The view point is one of the highest altitudes closest to escarpment where visitors view Kerio Valley. As the tarmac road meanders downhill, you get a perfect view of spectacular natural landmarks including the valley, Lake Kamnarok, Kerio River which hosts deadly crocodiles, Tugen Hills and Cherangani Hills. The magically laid out fault steps, steep escarpments and valleys covered with acacia vegetation paint a magnificent picture. Iten viewpoint allows you to see more of the Great Rift Valley than any other place on the ground. In fact, you can only see more of the Rift Valley if you are on a plane. Kerio Valley and Kerio valley  National Reserve Kerio Valley, one of the landmark features of the Great Rift, descends 4,000 ft, and is near the towns of Eldoret and Iten, The magically laid fault steps, steep escarpment facing and valley extensively covered with acacia vegetation paints a magnificent land on the Kenya Rift Valley. The floor of the Kerio Valley is covered by dry thorn bushes while the slopes have semitropical vegetation. Kerio Valley National Reserve offers a spectacular view of the Kerio valley in Kenya. You can also view the Torok Falls as well as the Chebloch Gorge while at the Kerio Valley National Reserve in Rift Valley part of Kenya. For the lucky few who happen to visit the reserve, you can experience the elephant migration via the Rimgoi reserve in Kenya Wildlife population including elephants, leopards and buffaloes, yellow baboons, bush backs, waterbucks and warthogs can be seen in the park. Kerio River Kerio River occupies the lowest level in Kerio Valley and hosts deadly Crocodiles. How Kerio River formed is extraordinary and mythical, Tugen and Keiyo communities have grounds to believe that long time ago, the two had undying boundary conflict and so a god locally known as Ilat became angry with the ongoing wrangles and stricken hard on the ground to demarcate Keiyo land from Tugen land hence end the dispute. Rimoi Game Reserve Its home to thousands of species of Rift Valley’s flora and fauna.  Gazetted in 1983, the reserve boasts a variety of animals including elephants, buffalos and dikdiks. There are also impalas, monkeys, baboons.   Bird life is abundant and various, with weavers, sunbirds, pigeons, honey guides, hornbills and turacos particularly prevalent Saiwa Swamp National Park Saiwa Swamp National Park is a forested paradise filled with exotic flowers, trees and bird. Arguably the smallest National Park in the Country, Saiwa Swamp gives the visitors a great chance to see one of nature’s peculiar creatures, the Sitatunga antelope which is semi aquatic. You can also see the white bearded De Brazza’s monkey that can only be found in this region.  Within this tropical wetlands and mosaic of riverine forest, sedges and acacia woodlands, with fringing dense rushes and grass bedsBird life is abundant. Water birds include the lesser jacana, grey heron and the African black duck while the forest shelters the Narina trogons, the collared and orange-tufted sunbird, the yellow bishop, Hatlaub’s marsh widow bird and the Noisy Ross’s turacos which are difficult to miss. Kipkoikoi Rock On the cliff side near Tambach, there towers a mythical Kipkoikoi Rock, a fairly cylindrical tip-pointed rock with a tabular platform at the foot. Our forefathers quips that Kipkoikoi  Rock was a Holy Shrine of Keiyo people. This is where they used to offer sacrifices to Supreme Being locally known as Asis. They would pour some milk or lay some green grass on the tabular rock beside Kipkoikoi and have their sins forgiven and fortune go their way. It is also bluntly believed that none would dare climb up to top of such rock, or else it befalls on him or her. Kolol Viewpoint About 15 miles away from Iten town downhill, you’ll never hesitate to stop at Kolol Viewpoint. The tarmac road curves at a fairly level platform that provides an open view of fascinating Torok waterfall on escarpment on the South West direction and diminishing Lake Kamnarok. Just ahead, lays a ‘snake-like’ tarmac road meandering down to Chebloch Gorge on Kerio River before leading to Kabarnet town. The Cherangani Hills They are the fourth highest mountain range in Kenya and include rolling hills as well as dramatic mountain peaks, and forms the highest, most breathtaking and spectacular escarpments of the Rift Valley. Unlike most of Kenya's mountains and ranges, the Cherangani Hills are not volcanic in origin. They are centred upon a forested escarpment and surrounded on three sides by sheer cliff faces. They are criss-crossed by walking paths, and ease of direction and undemanding slopes make this excellent country for relaxing hill walking. The paths cross open farmland, pass through sheltered valleys and wind their way up to forested peaks. All the main routes cross the 3000m contour, with decreased oxygen supplies Cherangani Hills Forest This is a collection of thirteen forest reserve blocks on the western ridge of The Great Rift Valey. The forested area is about 1,200 square kilometres. These forests form the upper catchments of the Kerio and Nzoia and Turkwel rivers. Attractions include, Beautiful Landscapes and scenery, Plenty of wildlife and bird watching. Kipteber Mountain Popping from approximately five kilometers off the range of Cherangany hills is a huge, steep, rocky and extraordinary mountain..A Mountain barring an extraordinary narrative of its origin spanning lots of generations ago. Mt. Kipteber strategically sits on the Elgeyo/Marakwet- Pokot counties borderline Chebloch Gorge This gorge was cut down into the hard, basalt rock by the power of the Kerio River itself. When in flood, the river increases tremendously in height and volume and carries a heavy load of fine, highly-abrasive silt which grinds down the river bed. Steel beams of the old colonial-age bridge are close by and in place to offer a perilous perch from which to view the gorge. Below the bridge, usually about 20m below, much less in the rainy season, are the muddy brown, crocodile-infested waters of the Kerio River. Young boys with primitive fishing rods compete with the crocodiles for the mudfish and catfish that are seasonally abundant. The Chalbi Desert Chalbi desert is located in northern Kenya, east of Lake Turkana. Chalbi in the local Gabbra language means "bare and salty." It is among the hottest and most regions in Kenya, a salty pan surrounded by volcano and lava flows .  Amazingly, you might still come across oryx, ostrich or even endangered Grevy zebra galloping across the great, shimmering whiteness. After the rains, the bone dry land turns into a shallow lake. On its northern fringes, where the wind piles up sand dunes, a chain of oases nourishes vast palm grooves. Chyulu Hills Chyulu Hills is located in Eastern Kenya, a mountain range that forms a 100Km long volcanic field. This destination is one of the prettiest places in Kenya, seeing the enchanted land of black frozen lava speckled with flaring poker trees is really something special. Ancient and new volcanic cinder cones and craters dot the landscape with black lava flow spilling down their flanks. Chyulu Hills provide to nature lovers. There are pockets of remote forests, wide open plains surrounded by the stunning hillsides. The escarpment is dotted with abundant wildlife and has a rich variety of different bird species. You can take a walking safari into the hills.  Local people and their donkeys carry the luggage and the camp, leaving you free to explore the beauty of the hills and forests. Olorgasailie Olorgesailie pre-historic site is world renown as the "factory of stone tools" and the only place in the world with the largest number. The prominence and accumulation of human tools represents actual camping places of early men and evidence that human species had a tropical origin. The site is in a lake basin that existed about 100,000 to 200'000 years ago. Olorgesailie has excellently preserved biological and cultural evidence about the evolution of man. This was made possible by heavy falls of alkaline volcanic ash from the nearby Mt. Suswa and Mt. Longonot, which might have contributed much to the accumulated ash in the lake basin.   Mount Suswa A true hidden gem, Mount Suswa is an excellent destination to add to your wish list, especially if you like camping. Another inactive volcano in the Rift Valley, Mount Suswa boasts a unique double-caldera, with an outer crater surrounding a second, inner peak. Hire local Maasai guide to help you find the road up to the crater, its isolation is a big part of Mount Suswa’s appeal. Its zigzagging hike along the outer crater rim will give you exceptional views of the volcano. Drive around the caldera to find Suswa’s famous lava tube caves and hike down into the caverns, which are full of bats, stalactites, and some interesting cave drawings of dubious origins. Koobi Fora Historic Sites Koobi Fora in the local language, means a place of the commiphora a source of myrrh, which is a common plant in this hot and arid area. The rich sedimentary rocks have yielded more than 10,000 Vertebrate and Hominid fossils. Most interesting here is a Stone Age burial site. Loiyangalani Desert Museum This museum was built on a bluff with a backdrop of Lake Turkana, the "Jade Sea." The name Loiyangalani means "a place of many trees" in the native Samburu language. The museum is hosted in this area by the El Molos, an almost extinct community in Kenya. Kapedo hot springs Two boiling hot waterfalls that plunge over a small escarpment before merging with Suguta river! Game Drives

The Elsa’s Kopje guides are based at the lodge in Meru National Park, they have the whole park to themselves, and know their backyard intimately. All the guides are Bronze or Silver level Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association certified. Elsa’s Kopje has open gamedrive vehicles. The current fleet are new, specially fitted, 4×4 Toyota Landcruisers. A Tourist Destination of Choice

With its diverse cultural heritage, Kenya is one of the most interesting destinations to visit around the world. The people are warm, friendly and welcoming. There are over forty ethnic groups in this country which are all unique in various ways and live together in peace and harmony. We have the Maasai, Samburu and the Turkana who still have their cultural practices and beliefs intact. The Maasai especially have their red trademark ‘shukas’ (type of square clothing wrapped around the body) which they adorn as their attire, and the maasai ‘morans’ (warriors) whose dance moves are characterized by very high leaps in the air. These three ethnic groups are semi-nomadic. The Samburu and Turkana women adorn beaded necklaces around their necks and large round earrings are hung from their earlobes. These decorations are not only meant for beauty purposes but are also used to show a woman’s rank in the society i.e. different age groups of the females. A most spectacular view is one of the Seven Wonders of the World at the Masai Mara Game Reserve- the wildebeest migration, the wildebeests and zebras migrate to Kenya in the months of July and October. They cross the Mara River which runs along the reserve where some of the animals are caught by crocodiles which lie in the waters waiting for a moment to present itself for them to have their meal. Sample the big five-lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard at Tsavo National park. The Kenyan coast has a lot to offer; the historical sites of Fort Jesus, Gedi Ruins, the old town of Lamu, sandy beaches, coral reefs among others. The snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya are an amazing and breath-taking site to behold. The Great Rift Valley is home to lakes Nakuru, Baringo and Bogoria. Lake Nakuru is famous for its pink masses of flamingos which feed on the algae which grow in this lake. Lake Turkana Festival The lake Turkana Festival takes place annually in Loiyangalani, a small town located on the south-eastern coast of Lake Turkana. The name means “a place of many trees” in the native Samburu tongue and is home to the El Molo, an almost extinct community, amongst other communities. Its main industries include fishing, tourism and gold panning. The uniqueness about this annual festival that is usually held around May is the fact the festival helps to overcome stereotypes and creates a mutual understanding of different cultures and promotes peaceful coexistence. The event features unique performances and demonstrations of ten different ethnic communities which live in the Lake Turkana region. A variety of vehicles aim to reach designated checkpoints scattered over approximately 100 square kms of rough terrain in the shortest distance possible. During the rally, teams have to make the decision between taking a safer, wider route or taking a riskier more direct route. The teams must then plot the control points on the map and decide their route. Navigation is by compass or GPS and the winner is the competitor who visits all controls in the shortest distance, GPS measured. Hundreds of spectators head into the bush to watch the event, setting up campsites and starting off early to get to the Gauntlet (a combination of 2 or 3 checkpoints that invariably involve water crossings and other difficult obstacles). Tantalizing Ngare Ndare

Ngare Ndare Forest is a flourishing 5,554 hectare indigenous forest at the foothills of Mt. Kenya. Ngare Ndare is Maasai for ‘water for the goats’. The forest forms an important corridor for elephants and other wildlife moving from Mt. Kenya forest to Il Ngwesi, Mukogodo and other sections of Kenya’s northern rangelands that includes the Lewa Conservancy.  It is home to 200 year old trees stretch into the canopy supporting a rich variety of bird and animal life. Some of the trees that form this forest include the Red Cedar trees and the African Olive trees which are considered to be two centuries old, and Yellow wood trees, which are preferred for the construction of boats. Ngare Ndare also hosts a river which originates  from a spring in the forest  and also Sapphire pools glistening  at the bottom of waterfalls creating  blue pools that go on to provide water for the wildlife along its banks and the surrounding communities. This makes a perfect ecosystem for wildlife and birds. Ngare Ndare boasts the only canopy walk in East Africa.  This 80 feet high wood and wire suspension bridge extends for about 450m through the tree canopy and it’s a perfect monkey’s view of the flora and fauna below. Plenty of wildlife can be view up the canopy including black rhino, elephant and buffalo. Activities The conservancy is a haven for adventure lovers within the forest include camping, hiking, game drives, swimming in the waterfall pools, cliff diving, abseiling and a very picturesque canopy walk where one can spot game. Canopy Walk The canopy walkway is a 40 ft. high aerial bridge of wire mesh and cables meandering through the tree canopy and extending 450 metres long. The walkway ends at a wooden platform 30ft. high, where you can relax and enjoy a view of the river from this elevated vantage point. Elephants and buffaloes frequently come here to drink and wallow, and one can enjoy a drink or a meal at the lofty leafy deck. Waterfalls and swimming. There are a series of waterfalls and pools down one of the river systems that flows with crystal clear water. The beauty of these natural sites is a wonder to see and enjoy. The river banks are a delicate environment so please use with care. Take a deep in these waterfalls and pool for a unique experience. Forest Camping We have two campsites that are sited near flowing water where guests can enjoy camping out in the wilds of the forest. The campsite is equipped with clean running water, a toilet and a bathroom. We have well trained guides who can take you on informative and fun filled camping that must be always accompanied by an armed ranger. There is always the excitement and sometimes a danger in meeting up with the big five in a forest environment. Canyoning There are a number of streams that make up the core of the forests life line, one of which offers a fantastic canyoning experience. Canyoning down this valley offers a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of this forest. A day out canyoning with an African Ascents guide will involve a number of waterfall jumps, slides and abseils. Rock Climbing The Ngare Ndare forest has some minor grade rock climbing sites and abseiling walls for the experienced adventurer. Game drives / Watching Ngare Ndare is favoured as a sanctuary by animals such as the elephant, rhino and buffalo, where they reside to give birth, nurse their injuries, recuperate or die.  It is home to several other wild animals, birds and insect species. What to wear on Safari

Shirts: You’ll want light breathable fabrics in neutral tones. I packed a mix of short sleeve and capped sleeve shirts. Pants: I mostly wore leggings on safari. I had one pair of cotton leggings that I pretty much wore nonstop and another pair of wool leggings that I wore overtop in the mornings until the day warmed up. If you’re not really into leggings, you could consider convertible pants to shorts to get you through the drastic change in temperature. Fleece or warm hoodie: A fleece or a thick hoodie is an absolute must. If you visiting Kruger National Park during the cooler months like I did, you’ll be seeing average highs around 25°C and lows that barely hover above 0°C. Now imagine driving in an open game viewing vehicle in the early morning with the wind whipping you in the face – that’s cold! Jacket: Aside from a fleece, it’s also a good idea to bring a jacket. This gives you an added layer of warmth, or you can wear it over your shirt once it’s too hot for your fleece. Scarf: Take with you a light pashmina mostly to wear in the mornings and evenings. Gloves: I know this probably sounds extreme, but if you’re visiting during the winter months you’ll be glad you brought a pair of gloves or mittens. They don’t have to be thick; just something light to wear when it’s cold. Hat: The sun can get quite strong during the day, so be sure to pack a hat, especially if you’re going to be doing some walking safaris. Something with a wide brim would be best so that you can get protection on the back of your neck. Underwear and sports bra: Safari drives can be bumpy, so girls, choose something that works for you. As for underwear, a good option is the ExOfficio route which are quick-drying, odour resistant, and breathable. Sneakers: A pair of sneakers or running shoes is perfectly fine. Unless you’re planning on doing a long walking safari, there is no need for heavy hiking shoes. Socks: Go for a crew sock that covers your ankles, because again, I was cold. Flip Flops: Flip flops are great to wear around camp in the afternoons or for the shower. Sunglasses: Find a fun pair of Lennon sunglasses , but anything that’s going to keep the sun out of your eyes is fine. Sunscreen: Safari days are along. Bring some SPF so you don’t end up with a bad sunburn. Insect repellant: Mosquitoes were not an issue when I visited in winter, however, you may want to bring some repellent if you’re doing your safari during the warmer months. Flashlight or headlamp: Packing a flashlight or a headlamp is especially important if you’re doing a camping safari that involves a bit of a trek from your tent to the bathroom. Even though we ended up upgrading to a cottage (with electricity!), we still used it to get around the campsite and when we went out on a nighttime safari. Binoculars: If you’re an avid wildlife spotter, you may want to consider packing a set of binoculars to look at smaller animals or those that are further away. We had one set of binoculars to share in our vehicle, which was fine. Water bottle and snacks: It’s also a good idea to bring a refillable water bottle as well as some snacks since safari outings can be quite long. Weekender bag: Depending on the length of your safari, you may want to bring along a weekender bag as opposed to hauling along all of your luggage.
