Currently Listening: InnerSpeaker - Tame Impala
Psychedelic song writer Kevin Parker’s whirling washy masterpiece of a debut album. Tame Impala’s second album Lonerism received the same critical acclaim but also broadened their audience, casting overdue and well-deserved light onto InnerSpeaker. What I really love about both of these albums is that they are set up like a classic rock album: each track stands alone, but the album is at its best when listened to start to finish. The long, airy instrumental interludes within the songs are never tedious.
Tame Impala perfectly channels retro psychedelia without becoming overly and unpleasantly experimental.
Also, is the album art by Leif Podhajsky not beautiful? I think his cover art is gorgeous.

There are so many things right with the way Mumford & Sons closed out Glastonbury 2013.
The band put their own twangy sound into the cover of "With a Little Help From My Friends", but also worked in the styles other bands on stage too, and it's all into that one song.
The Vaccines looking euphoric and dazzled and amazed to be on that stage. Justin Young rocks his solo moment.
Vampire Weekend looking very much like my high school concert band did with their horn section in the corner. Who couldn't appreciate a bubblegum pink P-bone?
Marcus Mumford unleashing an uncharacteristic,  full-on rockstar shriek.
It's fairly perfect.

Throwback Thursday
If you've never really listened to soul music, there is no better stepping stone than the wonderful god of soul, Marvin Gaye.
And if you've never listened to Marvin Gaye, What's Going On? (the song and the album) is a really good place to start. It's filled with history and culture and heart.
Watch the beauty unfurl here, and when you love that there is even more here.
Whether you look the man up on Spotify or pull out your parents records if your parents are that kind of cool, Mr. Gaye is worth it.

Currently Listening: Trouble Will Find Me
Favorites: Don't Swallow the Cap, Sea of Love, Demons
Though I am slightly biased by that bias that comes with seeing a band put on an excellent performance, I really think that The National's new album is both a great album and a great step for them as a band. It's consistent, and it is more consistently interesting than some of their other albums. There are some really beautiful songs on here, and songs like Sea of Love perfect that epic and tragic sound that has become the band's signature.
It's definitely one of the best new albums to come out as of late, and Matt Berninger's thick deep voice resonates over the many perfect and melancholy ballads.

It was really surreal being this close for Of Monsters and Men. They were so lovely!
Did I catch that press man taking a selfie? I believe I did.

Boston Calling: Writing Out the Post Concert Depression)
I had never ever been to a music festival before this weekend's Boston Calling, and I had to admit I was a wee bit terrified beforehand. I was even more terrified when I realized that it was going to pour and be sub-arctic freezing that first day. Luckily, Boston people are practical and surrendered their Day 1 festival fashion to raincoats and other warm clothing. Despite the weather, it ended up being the magical weekend of endless music that I hoped it would be. It was all amazing, but here are my thoughts in order of who I saw.
Day 1:
Bad Rabbits Had no idea what to expect from Bad Rabbits but they were the perfect kick off to the day, and from the second they started playing I knew it was going to be a good weekend. Who would't enjoy a band that sways in unison and demands that the crowd chant "butt-cheeks"?
Cults The sound for the Cults was a little bit off, and I think a lot of their music got lost. I didn't really start feeling it until they played 'Go Outside', but they have a really cool look and sound that I wish was just a bit clearer.
Matt & Kim They were so incredibly fun and energetic, and it was all dancing and balloons and confetti. Beware of crowd surfers they will smoosh you and you will probably touch a butt. Now that I know the kind of show Matt & Kim put on, I would go see them again in a heartbeat. If you can catch them, do it! It was so much fun. Plus they get extra points for getting everyone warm from all the dancing and energy.
The Shins The Shins, my absolute favorite of the day, are a band that I have wanted to see for years. I was expecting it to be a very life fulfilling experience, and it was. James Mercer is a god disguised as a somewhat adorable middle-aged man. They were really lovely. It was everything I was hoping it would be.
Fun. I watched Fun. from very far away, but they were still every bit as Fun. as they advertised. I appreciated the attempt to cover Me and Julio Down by the School Yard too, one of my favorite Paul Simon songs!  I wasn't the biggest fan of Fun. but they definitely put on a really good show.
Day 2:
Caspian  I don't think I've ever seen an instrumental band before, I liked it. The gathered tribal drum circle thing at the end was really cool.
Dirty Projectors  I love that they didn't have a central lead singer, all the playing switched around a lot among the members. Really experimental too, with all the funky vocal things they did live.
The Walkmen  Everyone talking about this show has talked about their cover of The Rat, but it was just so so good. I had never properly listened to them and really enjoyed their set, the lead singer had an amazing voice/stage presence. Listen to 'We Can't Be Beat'. Their music deviated from everything I had heard so far that day, which I liked.
Of Monsters and Men Oh, Of Monsters and Men. I saw them back in November and love love loved them live, and this time I got to be up close and personal. Incredible, of course. They closed with Yellow Light, and their was drumming and band members crowd swimming, I lie not when I say being caught in the middle of it was so overwhelming it almost brought tears.
Young the Giant - my biggest dissapointment of the event is being so far away from Young the Giant. Not only are they beautiful live (Sameer Gadhia's voice may actually be butter), they loved the hell out of their performance. They were so gracious and thrilled to be there, just amazing. I MUST see them live again in the future, I will pay any price.
The National -  Fake Empire is not only my favorite The National song, but also one of my favorite songs ever. When they played it I managed to go crazy even though I was was bewildered with the two days worth of exhaustion and hunger. The National really was the perfect close to the weekend.

You know what are just lovely?
NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts. They have them for all sorts of really great artists. They're high quality, intimate, and feature some a lot of interesting changes in instrumentation (it all has to fit behind the desk after all).
You can find them here.
