In castiel's defense what else was he supposed to do when faced with dean winchester in the bowels of hell?
Here he is, an angel, one of the many, who fought his way through abominations, smiting demons to reach this soul and it could have been that of any random bob but no, he's met with a soul so beautiful it would've been its own character in ovid's metamorphoses. it must have been the most amazing sight to behold, or to perceive in angelic senses at least.
and then here they are, dean's back on earth and cas meets him on this plane of existence and the guy has a personality so magnetic he enters a room and suddenly everybody's convinced all science is bullshit cause clearly the sun must revolve around this man.
so doubts turn into feelings turn into caring turns into falling.
And then we have dean winchester himself and, really, what the actual hell was HE supposed to do?
Here he is, in hell, suffering something that's not even humanly comprehensible, suddenly faced with a real angel of the lord, not just any angel, the weirdest freakiest dorkiest angel ever created. Such a "peculiar thing" this angel is that he just up and goes fighting against some of the most powerful creatures in existence just because. The angel that not only saved him from hell but he saved him from heaven too, because the first salvation was a claim in disguise but the second was freely chosen deliverance.
and then here they are, meeting in dreams, going back in time, ending up in different realities, basically daring all dimensions to bow down to them because they will find and recognize each other no matter what. leaving the footprint of their bond everywhere. this is a claim, too, and they do it together
so fear turns into curiosity turns into friendship turns into love.
In their defense what else where they supposed to do?

Today when they went to bed, Crowley noticed that Aziraphale had stuck a galaxy’s worth of glow-in-the-dark stars to their ceiling because he knew how much Crowley had loved making the real thing. Crowley nuzzled into Aziraphale’s side and mumbled his thanks, feeling slightly embarrassed and completely and utterly loved.
