absolutely hate this fandom trend of looking at your media of choice’s token female character and being like “ah yes. she is The Holder Of The Braincell. the most reasonable of the group, if not the ONLY reasonable one. she is in control of her emotions, only looking upon the boys’ foolish antics with mild, bemused exasperation for she knows that boys will be boys. she will not participate since she is, after all, the Most Rational of the group, looking over the lads like a nanny, or perhaps even a mother”. like. yawn. I for one would like to see some funny women instead

Rey shakes her head against Poe’s words. The tears are hot and bitter on her face, salty stinging streams of frustration. “I never asked to be important!” she shouts back at him. “I never asked to be--” The words choke off in her throat; Rey can’t bear to tell him. Can’t bear to tell any of them what she’s just learned from Kylo Ren. (Can she believe him? She shouldn’t. He lied to her before. All he does is lie. But this time it doesn’t feel like a lie. Stars, but she wishes it felt like a lie...)
“You don’t know what you’re talking about,” Rey says, her voice low and as jagged as the shards of the broken black helmet she left scattered across the deckplates of Kylo Ren’s quarters. “That’s not the worst thing. Not the worst by far.” She stares at her fingers, the fingers from which that shock of pure rage emerged in a bolt of evil lightning that came so close to killing Chewbacca -- so close, and all her fault...
He’s alive, she reminds herself. Chewie is alive. He’s in the Falcon’s rudimentary medbay right now, being tended by Finn as they speed through hyperspace. Rey ought to be there too, but she can’t. Can’t face Chewie right now, can’t face the thought of what might happen if she tried to use the Force to heal him from his battering at the hands of the First Order and instead did something awful. It’s why she hasn’t offered to heal Poe, either, although she can tell that even with the bacta-patch his arm has to hurt. She can practically feel it throbbing in the Force -- but she can’t touch it. Can’t help. Can’t risk it.
Tumblr media
“I shouldn’t have come with you,” she says, her voice dropping even lower, barely more than a whisper. She still can’t look at Poe. Can he see it in her, the taint of evil? Of the Dark Side? Can they all see it? Leia -- Luke. Was that why he wouldn’t train her? Could he tell? Why didn’t he tell her? “I’m too dangerous. I should have stayed on the ship...should have fought. Maybe Kylo Ren would have killed me -- or maybe I’d have killed him. Maybe we’d both be dead, and the galaxy would be better off.” Her words are bitter, but she can feel the truth in them. It’s as true as the words Kylo Ren spoke that shattered everything.
@solerey sent:  ❛ it would have been better to die. ❜
Poe spins on his heels, coming to a full stop in front other Rey, just inches from her, and the anger in his bones is enough that it feels as though the air around him is heating up. “Never say that again, never.” He tries, and fails, to control his emotions, but he does calm his breathing and force his jaw to unclench. “That’s not true, living is always worth it even when it hurts.”
Tumblr media
His hands are clenched at his sides, hard enough that he knows his palms will have finger nail marks when he finally, finally manages to unclench them. But he can’t stop the anger and fear in his voice. “The worst thing you can do in war is lose your will to keep going. It means we lose, it means fear and pain win.” But it’s more than that and he knows it even as he speaks.
“And your life is important, even when you hate it.”

No. I'm honestly not sure how that would work? Something with the hypothetical children of Obi-Wan's brother I guess?
I've never thought about it before but sure, I guess why not? Message me what you're thinking or throw me a link to whatever verses page or post you've got in mind and we'll figure it out.

The Skywalker Sibling Cycle
sadlystillnotsparky:
If having a sister meant that he got to catch her up on all of their parents’ missteps and hilarious adventures, then Ben was happy to have a sister. Especially one who was so entertained by his stories.
“Yep! Apparently, they gave him grief forever,” he told her, snickering himself at the thought. “Uncle Han kept making wilder and wilder guesses until they finally found out who it was.”
He shrugged. “The Rebellion throws a good party, for sure. I can’t wait for you to see one of our real ones. They’re always fun.”
Her observation about no one buying her drinks made him snort. “Since I’m your brother, I guess I’m supposed to say that anyone who buys you drinks with any sort of ulterior motive will have me to answer to, but the reality is that I’m the least of their problems. They’d have to get through Uncle Han, Aunt Leia, and Mom and Dad just to get to me.”
“I can’t drink either,” he told her, shaking his head. “I have the worst tolerance ever. Although, I’ve really only ever had like one drink, but I ended up tipsy for sure, so it wasn’t my best idea.”
He shrugged. “As it is, I might not be able to give you any advice on drinking like a champion, but I can help you find your way around here all right. Right away, I can warn you that the most dangerous thing that you will ever hear Aunt Leia say to you is ‘I made it myself’,” he put on a terrified expression. “Especially if it’s spice loaf. Always avoid the spice loaf.”
“Who was it?” Rey blurted, an instinctive response to Ben’s words spoken before she could stop and think about if she really wanted to know -- or the fact that even if Ben told her, what were the chance she’d even recognize the name? (Unless it was Dosmit Ræh maybe, but the coincidence of that would be just about unfathomable.) Or, wait -- hadn’t Ben said that they’d never told him who it was? But Uncle Han had found out, so maybe he could tell her...but that again returned her to the question of if she even wanted to know.
Rey decided she didn’t. Probably. Unless it was someone like Dosmit Ræh maybe. But the only way to find out who it was would be to find out who it was and...that was weird, wasn’t it? Was it? What did she know?
Whatever. She’d leave it in Ben’s hands. That felt safe...right?
Tumblr media
She smiled a little uncertainly as Ben assured her that the parties here were good. Rey wasn’t sure what that meant and, after the story about their father, was a little afraid of finding out...but parties were normal, right? Parties were fun. She should enjoy a party. She could learn to enjoy a party. Maybe a small one, without too many people. That could be nice...probably. Yes. Yes it would be nice. Rey wouldn’t let it not be. Hopefully.
“That’s...a long line of very scary people,” Rey said slowly. She wasn’t sure exactly why someone would be going through them to give her drinks she wasn’t sure she wanted, but it still felt weirdly nice to hear Ben talk like that. Like she was someone that people cared about. Like she was family. Her smile spread a little wider across her face, still uncertain but growing. Settling. Maybe she was settling, too; settling in, like Chewbacca had assured her she would if she just gave herself a chance. “I think I’ll just follow your lead, and stick to one. Or none. Whatever you think you should do, that’s what I’ll do,” Rey said, nodding decisively. “I’ll take your advice on whatever topic you want to give it, Ben, thank you.
“But...first can you tell me...” She leaned in, her eyes widening with fear. “What’s spice loaf?”

BEING HUMAN SENTENCE STARTERS   —   quotes pulled from season one of the bbc series. feel free to make alternations.
it’s okay. you’re safe now.
trouble follows me like a curse, and you deserve so much better.
so who wants tea?
you can’t do this on your own.
i just thought love was a miserable lie. but since i’ve met you, i…
congratulations on mastering the whole speaking like a twat thing.
you tried to protect me from it all, didn’t you?
i’m being as honest as I can be right now.
there wasn’t a single bit of that sentence i understood.
you think this is the first time something like this has happened?
we need to embrace humanity, let the world in.
i just wanted a chance to explain.
am i really that hard to love back?
you are not meeting my friends.
i’m looking for something to defend myself with. so far i have a whisk.
don’t worry, you’re not my type.
how do you think this ends?
you’re not the only one with secrets.
for all i know this could be perfectly normal.
how did you find me?
maybe we can go out, but just for a bit.
i like my routine, it makes me feel normal.
you keep making tea! every surface is covered with cups of tea and coffee!
death isn’t always the unwelcome guest you think it is.
i’m sure that sounded much better in your head.
we just have to be totally and completely normal.
you’re lucky. most people don’t get a chance to say goodbye.
is it over? are we safe now?
you are loved. by loads of people. by me.
we have to put a stop to this.
any time you want to chip in, say something constructive, do feel free.
i’m dead, in case you hadn’t noticed!
[name]’s moved on with his life. you need to as well.
you know, i don’t really see where this relationship is headed anymore.
i’m sensing a trip to ikea, And you know my feelings about that.
can you live with that?
this is becoming a habit. i come in here, look at the wreckage, and i say sorry.

taanabianjig:
“Oh yeah?” Wes asked, not believing her for a solitary moment. “because I would think that something like this would be a shock and a half. I don’t know that I’d be functioning even as well as a gonk droid. And that’s saying something given that they’re about the most useless hunks of junk in the galaxy.”
Which was also saying something. Wes wasn’t a big fan of droids in general apart from astromechs.
Her next question startled him. Of all the things he was expecting her to say, that wasn’t one of them.
“I was,” he confirmed, “and I knew Dosmit well. But, while I’d be hard-pressed to think of anyone who’d make a better commanding officer, I’m afraid that I got out right before she took over. Why?”
“Oh, uh, well, it’s not so much that, uh--” Rey started to stammer, her face pulling back in an involuntary grimace as she struggled to find a diplomatic way to answer his accusation (his accurate assessment) without saying something rude about her newfound (refound?) family. Then the rest of what he’d said sunk-in and she frowned. “Hey! Gonk droids aren’t useless!” She folded her arms. “Who do you think charges your snubfighter’s secondary systems when the engines aren’t spooled-up, for starters? And who regulates the power conduits for the base? And who makes sure our shields don’t go out whenever it gets too humid? And who--?”
Rey realized belatedly that chiding Commander Wes Janson, hero of several dozen battles and icon of the old Rebellion, was probably not the best way to endear herself to...well, anyone, but Janson himself least of all. She felt heat flare in her cheeks and murmured, “Er, I mean...that is...not that they maybe couldn’t be put to more efficient use, I guess...but that’s not really the gonk droids’ fault so much as that of the organics who fail to properly grasp their potential, is it? I mean...”
Tumblr media
She shook her head. “I mean, sorry. That’s not what -- I didn’t come here to talk about gonk droids. I’m sorry. I just -- Dosmit Ræh. Right. She...well, growing up on Jakku I found her crashed Y-Wing and I...oh, this is stupid, never mind! I’m sorry!” Rey turned to flee, almost tripping over her own feet in her hasty attempt to outrun her the growing swell of mortification billowing up to swamp her.

resistancesheir:
He’s taking this seriously, really he is, but he’s almost nearly crying from trying to hold back his laughter. It’s late on the base and it’s so rare that anyone actually gets to sleep he doesn’t want to risk waking up anyone that might be knocked out in a room near him. How would he explain that? Oh, so sorry, our resident jedi kissed a girl and called me to chat. Not a good reason, but would make a great story over caf in the morning with Finn. So, he doesn’t laugh again, but if she were in the room with him she would see the way he was biting his cheek to stop the noises from spilling out and just making her feel worse.
Also, he doesn’t believe in getting a nicer or more private room just because of his title, so he sleeps in the same rooms as everyone else, would even have bunkmate should the need arise.
But, anyway, the point, Rey on the com acting like the war is not biggest crises currently. It’s nice, reminds him of Yavin IV when the whole galaxy seemed like it would end because he kissed a boy in a tree and wasn’t sure where to go from there.  Moving himself in his bed, still lying down but now with his head more firmly on the pillow instead of buried between his arm, Poe situated himself to get comfortable, this was going to be a long one.
Tumblr media
Obviously it was Rose, Poe could’ve seen that coming from a parsec away, but he does not say that outloud which alone should earn him another medal for bravery and restraint. “Okay, okay, calm down, you’re rambling.” She catches that herself but he still needs to say it, he is being supportive but he’s still going to poke at her.
“First of all, you kissed her because you like her and that’s good, now you can stop pretending you didn’t want to kiss her. You are not a good liar, Rey, not surprising considering everything about you, but really, it was like watching a puppy try and chase after a big dog and then pretend it wasn’t.” Not a great metaphor, but in his defense he’s only half awake.
Running a hand through his messy curls, Poe let out a soft sigh, somewhere between fondness and annoyance as he often was with her. “How did she react to the kiss? Or did you flee before she reacted? I’m not judging you, I jumped out of a tree after I kissed a boy once.”
A strangled sort of growl-squeak of frustration popped out of her mouth completely independent of her brain or conscious intention. Of course she was rambling, she had commed Poe explicitly to ramble. Granted she hadn’t know that at the time she’d selected his frequency, had been simply looking for advice or, better yet, a solution to the disaster of her life -- but now that she’d started speaking well, yes, obviously she was rambling. Her life was falling apart and there was no possible or even plausible way to fix it; what was there to do but ramble?
But Poe kind of rambled, a little bit, less than her of course, but then he wasn’t the one suffering right now, so his rambling was purely in response to her personal disaster rather than being caused directly by his own idiocy, so of course he was holding it together better than her. Rey had commed him because she’d known he stood a much better chance than her of holding things together.
He made sense, though; he was right. (Probably about all of it, even the embarrassing puppy bit that Rey wanted to pretend was very much wrong.) Her frantic heart sank a little bit at the revelation that Poe probably wasn’t the only one who’d noticed her infatuation, if he was talking like that. Embarrassment hadn’t been an emotion commonly experienced in the wastes of Jakku but Rey felt like she was becoming intimately acquainted with the feeling now that she was back with the Resistance. She wouldn’t argue that, even at her most mortified, her life now was better than it had been then -- but there were times when she wished the sands of Jakku could somehow rise up and swallow her whole the way they had that one time when she’d failed to realize she’d stumbled on a Nightwatcher Worm barrow and had spent three hours trapped in its warren before finally digging herself out. Except this time, there wouldn’t be an out: just the peaceful doom of empty sands, forever.
Rey sighed and tried to pull herself together. Weren’t Jedi supposed to be masters of their emotions? Stars but she hoped she’d get to that part of her training soon.
Tumblr media
“I don’t know! Of course I fled! I jumped off the ship like I was hopscotching off active TIE fighters and sprinted out of there as fast as my legs would carry me! What would you have done if you’d been in my sh -- wait.” Poe’s words echoed in her ears and Rey sat up, her eyes going wide under raised brows. “You jumped out of a tree? When was this? Where? What boy? Poe!”

The Skywalker Sibling Cycle
sadlystillnotsparky:
Ben grinned. “Okay,” he said, more than completely willing to tell Rey that particular story. “It’s pretty funny.”
He sat back a bit in his chair as though preparing to share an epic tale of woe and tragedy.
“So, Dad wasn’t really given a lot of access to alcohol growing up. Apparently, his uncle wasn’t a big fan, and it wasn’t really something he ever sought out before he left Tatooine.”
He figured Rey would understand that. He doubted that Rey did much drinking on Jakku, either.
“So, after the first Death Star, when everyone is celebrating and excited, the Rogues find out that he’s never been much of a drinker. Well, of course, that doesn’t sit well with most of them because they think that he needs to celebrate ‘properly’. So, they take him to the makeshift bar that they’ve got set up on base.”
Ben had, of course, never seen this bar, but he felt as though he could get a pretty good picture of it in his mind. He’d heard the story enough times, after all. Hobbie had once described it as a mess of packing crates set up for seating and a stock-pile of whatever rotgut people had brought with them or been able to manufacture or gather along the way. Hardly one of Coruscant’s fine sky-level cantinas.
“Then, of course, they literally cannot stop people from sending drinks his way. And Dad hasn’t really experienced alcohol, so he has no idea what his limits are,” he snorted, “and so he just keeps drinking them.”
He gestured vaguely. “Now, I don’t know what your tolerance is like, but Dad is a serious lightweight. He doesn’t drink very often at all, in fact. Now, the Force can obviously be used to keep him sober if he needs it to, but he didn’t know that at that time, of course. So, he just starts getting more and more blitzed.”  He snickered, “And, naturally, they also can’t keep people from propositioning Dad, either. He’s the hero of the day, after all. And, if he hadn’t had a lot of experience with with alcohol, he might have had just about the same level of experience with romance.”
He paused to take a sip of his drink. “So, the next day, when Dad finally drags himself from his bedroom looking like he’s lost a fistfight with a Gundark, they learn that he did, in fact, spend the night with someone. The only problem is that Dad is being really coy about it . Like… not telling anyone who it is.”
“And so,” he said, not even able to keep the giggling at bay, “finally Uncle Han gets out of him that he literally cannot remember.”
He shook his head. “He didn’t actually learn for like… another week. And, while I haven’t been given the identity of the individual myself, the mere fact that Dad had this tremendous gap in his memory is so funny to me that I have a hard time keeping it together when I think about it.”
Rey nodded in obedient understanding, listening raptly as Ben spoke -- as though he were relating vital Resistance protocol rather than a silly story about their father when he was young. To Rey, this was every bit as important. She cared about defeating the First Order, of course she did. But this was her family. The thing she had spent her whole life wanting. Nothing mattered more.
Tumblr media
“Oh no,” she murmured with dawning amusement -- and horror; horrified amusement? amused horror? It was hard to say which emotion held precedence within the nervous laughter bubbling up in her throat. Now she shook her head, as though she could fend-off what Ben was telling her even as she leaned closer so that she would be sure not to miss a single word.
(She did make a mental note to file-away the revelation that the Force could be used to maintain sobriety. She wasn’t sure how that would work -- didn’t know enough the Force yet to know how hardly any of it worked -- but it seemed like something that could be useful to look into and learn. Especially given that many of the stories she’d already heard about Resistance celebrations indicated that not much had changed in that aspect since the destruction of the First Death Star.)
“Oh no,” Rey said again, although it wasn’t until several seconds after Ben’s comment about fighting a Gundark that she belatedly realized what sort of propositions Ben had been talking about. She covered her mouth in horror. “No!” she gasped. A giggle slipped past her fingers and she grimaced. “You’re not...? He didn’t...? Oh no,” she said for the third and final time. “He didn’t remember? That’s...oh dear.”
Rey shook her head, her lips twitching at the sight of her brother’s cackling. “And everyone thought he was being coy. Poor Lu...dad. That’s quite a welcome to the Rebellion, isn’t it. Stars, I’m glad nobody decided to buy me drinks when I got here. Good thing I didn’t do anything heroic first, fierfek. Sands only know what would have happened to me.” She raised an eyebrow at her brother and added wryly, “I don’t know what kind of tolerance for alcohol I have, but I have a feeling that not much would be an apt estimate since I’ve almost never had any before.”

“Yeah. Of course I know who you are,” he said, holding a hand out in response to her offer. “How are you adjusting? Everyone treating you okay?”
He tucked his hydrospanner back into the pocket of his jumpsuit. “What exactly did Ben say that you should talk to me about? Because, I have to admit you’ve got my curiosity on high alert, now…”
Ben was just mischievous enough that Janson had a theory that whatever it was Rey was in search of, it was probably going to be fun.
Or about X-wing repair. One of the two.
He knew who she was. Right, of course he did. Probably wasn’t every day that the daughter of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade emerged from the Dark Side-induced mass amnesia of the whole galaxy and returned to the Resistance. Probably everyone on the base knew her by sight already.
She felt like more of an idiot than ever, but forced a smile and what she hoped came off as a perky nod anyway. “Oh, yep. Yep, everyone’s wonderful. Everyone’s been wonderful. Being wonderful. Absolutely. I’m adjusting like...like a gonk droid that’s just gotten wired-up to a new power converter. Bam. Like that.” She snapped her fingers, realizing belatedly that she’d probably over sold it, and tried to carry it off with a big smile and another nod.
In her awkward embarrassment, she’d almost forgotten why she came to talk to Janson. It was only when he mentioned Ben that the memory lurched back up and grabbed her attention through the fog of mortification.
Tumblr media
“Oh!” Rey said. “Right, yes -- you. I mean. You were in the Tierfon Yellow Aces, right?” She fixed her eyes, beaming with hope -- almost pleading, really -- on Janson. “Were you there when Dosmit Ræh commanded the squadron?”

“Er..excuse me, Mister Pilot Commander Janson, sir?” Rey dithered on the threshold of the hangar, twisting her fingers around one another like a gorgy bird in a death spiral. “Um. My brother -- um, I mean Ben, Ben Skywalker, he said I should talk to you -- er, I’m Rey. I should have started with that. Ben’s sister. I’m sorry. Hello! I’m Rey! How are you?”
She thrust a hand out at him, knowing that the smile she’d plastered across her face probably looked more manic than anything else, and wished for once that she was back on Jakku. Hoping that the sand underfoot would open up and swallow you was a lot easier to do when you were actually standing on sand.

There’s a moment, and if asked he will deny that moment, where he’s terrified she’s being honest. That his night of sleep is about to once again be interrupted by a tragedy or a fight, or both.
Tumblr media
But then she speaks again and Poe actually lets out a soft laugh. Honestly, he just wants to hug her and tell her that he’s a little bit proud of her, but he can’t, so he settles for laying back down with the commlink pressed to the side of his face. Maybe if he managed to talk her through this he could actually go back to sleep and not worry about dreams. That would be fun for once. First though he’s gotta think of something to say that will make her the least likely to freak out. Never an easy thing considering Rey is Rey and Poe is Poe, both of them have too much fun poking at each other.
“Well, first question, who did you kiss? We gotta go from there.”
He laughs, and some of the tension -- some -- that has Rey’s nerves singing like ion canons through her veins seeps away. Because she is exaggerating and it is funny, but in a nervous sort of funny; the relief that follows a jump-scare, when your heart is still pounding and your body is singing with the elation of being alive. The post-battle high where everything is funny and wonderful and grand just because you’re there to see it.
(Maybe she should take offense that he’s laughing at her tragedy, but Rey hasn’t lived the sort of life that would teach her to take offense at a friend’s laughter. Not even when it’s at her expense.)
She huffs a breath and hauls herself up so that she’s sitting slumped against the wall behind her bunk, letting the reliably hardness of the bulkhead hold her up her against the urge to slump into a puddle and stay there.
Tumblr media
“Roooooooooooooooooooooooose,” she says, the word a long low moan. She follows it with another moan, this one somewhat distorted by the hands she drags over her face, one splayed to grab her cheeks like she’s looking for an anchor and the other wrapped tight around the commlink that is her only lifeline right now.
At first Rey intends to leave it at that -- Poe can surely take a guess from there -- but without really intending to, she keeps speaking, the words tearing out like thruster wash. “We were working on that chop-ship we’ve been trying to put together, you know, trying to see if we can build something that has A-Wing speeds but X-Wing durability without sacrificing too much maneuverability or laser-power to make it flyable, so we’re using some old TIE-Defender theories and some B-Wing engineering principles, and we were putting in the double s-foil splay around the cockpit, and it was going horribly, and it was so much fun.” Rey is hardly pausing to breathe now that she’s gotten started. “And we couldn’t get a good angle so we were both just sort of hanging off the s-foils, right? Dangling like mynocks. Only there was nowhere to put the toolboxes that they wouldn’t fall off, so I was floating things up when we needed them, and she asked me for a three-eighths sonic, and I knew I had one of those in the second box so I leaned forward so I could see it to float it up, but then I slipped, and she caught me, and I kissed her. Poe!” Rey’s rambling ends in a wail. “Poe why did I DO THAT!?”

“ things must be catastrophic if you’re calling me at this hour. ”

"They are,” Rey assured him, her tone heavy with sincerity. “Absolutely dire. Possibly the worst situation in which I’ve ever found myself.”

She drew a breath (she was exaggerating, of course, and they both knew it, because they both knew exactly what kind of catastrophic situations she had been in before, but this was...a different sort of catestrophic, and exaggeration of this sort seemed justified based on the way Rey’s hands were shaking and her stomach was twisting and her heart was thudding) and rolled over on her bunk so that she was facing the ceiling of her quarters and swallowed hard.
Then she lifted the commlink to her lips again and said, “I kissed somebody. Now what do I do? Help me, Poe. Help me.”
