why should you go watch monkey man? well dev patel gets beat up continually for a solid hour before being brought back from the brink of death by a group of trans and non binary people who then help him kill and maim a bunch of politicians and cops. also there's one scene where he stabs a guy in the neck with a knife and then uses his teeth to slit his throat

I have seen some posts around lately where people exclaim that they are tired of Cat’s name-dropping, seeing it as a cheap way to include pop-culture references for bonus points. And maybe they’re right, maybe the show writers are just using Cat as a walking twitter account for 140-character one-liners.
Or maybe, just maybe, Cat Grant grew up in a household where the names you dropped defined all of your worth. Maybe her A+ report cards and her first school newspaper article were never stuck to the fridge, but instead a prom photo of her and the son of a senator hung framed on the living room wall. Maybe Cat’s best friend in junior high was no longer permitted to come over when the girl’s mother’s interior design emporium went bankrupt and they had to sell their house and move to a middle-class neighbourhood. Maybe when Cat was sixteen and her father died her mother spent the entire funeral beguiling the most influential people at the reception without taking even one second to acknowledge the eulogy that had taken Cat four tear-filled, lonely nights to write?
Maybe, after being shot down over and over again by her last remaining parent, Cat learned that personal success, and particularly connections to other successful people, were the only achievement that ever brought forth a raised eyebrow of mild interest on her mother’s face.
Maybe Cat’s self-worth so heavily relies on her connections to famous and successful people, because every time she speaks their names out loud she is a teenager again, standing in the kitchen with her first junior journalism award clutched between her fingers, heartbroken that her mother would not even glance at the winning essay, and finally, reluctantly, Cat is dropping the names of the professional authors whom she had shared a table with during the award ceremony. Maybe it was that sudden tilt of the head and the spark in her mother’s eyes, usually so full of contempt and disappointment, that thrust Cat into the shallow world of networking.
And the thing is, it does not help. Cat never manages to make the small flame of that barely-there recognition in her mother’s eyes grow. And in the beginning she thought that she just had to catch bigger fish, but the more of a name Cat made for herself, the harsher her mother rejected her.
Now, after years of therapy and a lot of soul-searching, Cat understands that she will never receive her mother’s approval, that regardless of who she knows (like the Duchess of Cambridge) in her mother’s eyes she will never be good enough. And I think Cat makes her peace with that when Carter is born, because that is when she finally understands unconditional love, and that what she feels for Carter (and what she did not allow herself to feel for Adam at first) will never change, regardless of his success in life, regardless of the people he might ever meet. And this is when she realises that it is her mother who is broken.
But, as Cat says, just like riding a bike you never forget childhood trauma. She carries those scars with her, and although she now recognises her habit to mention famous people in order to raise herself above others as such, she cannot quite break it. And that is okay, because at least she is breaking the cycle. She raises Carter beautifully, and she makes a good start–with Kara’s help–to repair things with Adam. And most importantly, she meets Kara Danvers, who is probably the first assistant Cat has ever had who is not starstruck, who does not seem phased by the dropping of impressive names, but who reveres Cat anyway, because of who she is.

cannot stress enough how insane this interview has made me particularly lucia saying this!!!!!! after she, paul and hannah all express that the season three finale are something they are so happy with not verbatim but "there's one scene in particular (in the finale) where i'm just proud that we were able to create characters that then could have the scene. and even though to me, jean and hannah are the scene, still being able to be like well we created these characters that allowed these actors to do this scene i feel-i'm very proud of that"
