As a showreel is a piece of work created by an artist to demonstrate their skill, It is important that the audio accompanying the visual be in kind with the visuals. This is in order to create a solid portfolio advertising the artist’s skill.
The feeling I aimed to present with the musical aspect of my showreel is one of drama, at least in some aspect. I wanted something orchestral, elegant and dramatic to compare with my light, detailed artistic style with strong use of lighting.
Having never attempted composing before, my main inspiration was researching the musical styles of other artists I liked. I aimed to analyse these musical pieces to look for beats, chords, instruments and sounds used commonly, I would then use these themes to build my own piece. This had the possibility of sounding generic as it was built of generic sounds but I saw no other way of continuing.
I approached the musical piece by starting with MIDI instruments like the piano and Violin played through the MIDI keyboard onto Cubase, as these were commonly occurring instruments in orchestral pieces. I created an escalating and diminishing chord pattern using the Violin but my main melody was one very similar to that used in “Abraham’s Daughter” by Arcade Fire. Mine was slower and used a piano but I felt I needed to edit this further to make the track more individual.
During the editing process several more layers were added, inspired by my research, but of my own creation. I played my research tracks and stopped them half way through, leaving myself to sing the notes I thought might sound next. These notes differed from the notes that were to be played next in the song, but still sounded good. It was these notes I composed my melodies from by layering them atop each other using different instruments. I used Solo and group Violins, a Fiddle and an Acoustic Piano.
After composing the main notes of the piece I noticed they sounded quite flat and unrealistic so I added reverb to all the instruments, making them sound as if they were being played inside a Cathedral, I thought the big sound would fit well with the orchestral instruments. This made the piece sound more realistic and atmospheric.
My original idea was not specific, I simply wanted an orchestral piece. I feel my final product fits well with this idea as it sounds orchestral. I feel it could be improved by the main melody sounding more original. I have changed some of the notes in it and overlayed it with other instruments but I feel it still sounds similar to “Abrahams Daughter” in the declining notes. I feel more instruments would help build the music up in the introductory section as I feel long periods of repeating notes get quite boring.
Overall I feel the musical piece matches my artistic style well and therefore creates an effective companion to my work in order to demonstrate my skill.

Didn't like the high notes - didn't think they went well with the rest of the tune. sounded out of place. Need to re-listen to write more. tbc

Final project for sound (Making music for a show reel): What I've got so far. Got to the end of my sound session and the keyboards have been put away, so I'm going to try and finish this next week. If I'm still not happy I will have to continue using Cubase's internal keyboard, I'd rather not do this though as I imagine its hard to play chords with a mouse :P
Like I said I've been taking notes from the songs I've researched to compose my own music track. The melody though I think still sounds too similar to some of the things Iv'e been looking at so I need to build in more notes from other songs and remix them so the melody becomes more original. The chords are totally my own though, which I'm quite pleased with (The violin track) because I think that sounds quite good. Like I said though, the melody needs more work.
So far I have played/created all the notes/music myself using the keyboard that plugs into the pc and the record MIDI function in Cubase. I would like to record some wind effects or something to overlay the track with but I need to wait for a windy day where the wind is loud enough to record xD or a storm would be good? Thunder? :P If this doesn't happen before hand in I'll just have to find the nature sounds online and explain this in my essay :P
need to rearrange some of the sounds cause they sound too slow
want to fade in the violins at the beginning - but MIDI needs to be made into a sound file first
rearrange the melody so parts of it dosent go as 'deep' this will make it sound less like the songs I've researched and will make it fit with the chords more

Less focus on music and more on sound effects to match progress of animation + background ambiance.actual
music used is minimal and is used to bridge gap between sound effects.
Music builds as fight gets more dramatic, becoming a more prominent focus.
Fast and choppy melody fits well with fast and tense action.

opens with high pitched lingering sound interjected by drum
orchestral
I really like how the music has overlays of sounds depending on what the image is of. Fisherman = bird noises. Blacksmith = hammer. Ties together audio and video really well
Musical notes fairly repetitive. Pitch heightens and lowers to add musical interest.
Half way through melody changes and becomes a higher pitch more focused on string instruments after which it changes again quite quickly. Long notes swapped for more choppy short ones. I actually don't like this change. Near the end I feel the song should be trailing off rather than suddenly becoming choppy and dramatic. Music doesnt transition well from one type of sound to the next - i feel.

strings, + piano
Slow beginning with long notes
Then built up with shorter higher pitch notes that compose the melody.
Strings change to adapt to tune of melody. Backing melody?
Increase in volume to increase tension.
Has a sense of releaf to the music? Due to the long drawn out notes. Not panicky/high pitched/fast.
break in music and tune changes. Much faster. but uses high, similar notes that are quite medium paced and again work in harmony with violin to create a sense of harmony in listener (and happiness)
Lower string instrument introduced. Gives hearty feeling. Again all the instruments work in harmony to play same melody.
Repetition of first set of notes to build in familiarity - make listener feel secure.
Short fade out of instruments

contrasts of fast and slow notes builds tension.
Faster notes become more prominent as tension builds.
Longer notes become more layered as tension builds
Vocals, percussion,strings,bells
Break in music and then tune changes dramatically. different melody and tunes.
on 4's
Interest kept by addition of subtraction of instruments constantly
also by varying volume and pitch and by contrast of long and short notes and build up of same equally.

Reverb and echoing instruments
Pitch and volume builds to create tension.
Breaks with introduction of guitar. This (above) happens multiple times throughout song. It is compromised of build up and then sudden breaks in tension to keep interest. For the most part a a lot of the notes are repetitive. Interest is kept by constant exclusion and re inclusion of instruments. And build up and build down of volume and pitch.
Guitar, strings, drums

Guitar, vocals, minimal string instrument - violin? Fiddle? Duet of vocals. sort of like, a marching Drum.
Melody carried by vocals.
Guitar very much follows tune and pitch of vocals.
Simple, not very layered or textured
Main focus on vocals
Texture created by contrast in pitch of male and female vocals

On a beat of 4's?
Percussion at the beginning builds tension in quickening beats - reminiscent of a heart beat?
Instruments build up slowly, one at a time to build up layering of instruments in piece.
Percussion has reverb - makes it sound very echoey - like its in a large hall/ church/catherderal.
Instruments: Vocals, violin and guitar
Steady drum beat - almost throughout. Small breaks - like before strings kick in
No solid tune or melody. More a build up of different instruments repeating the same notes. But continued addition of different instruments keeps interest.
Instruments fade out slowly one by one.
Dramatic change when strings go out as they were the loudest aspect. Dramatic release of tension,
Fade out much shorter than fade in - of instruments.
Long, drawn out sounds are used. Percussion is quite choppy in comparison.

starts, not with wind, but a wind sounding instrument that creates atmosphere
Builds in pitch and intensity of sound until crash when main melody kicks in - release of tension.
On a beat of 4's? Chorus at a much louder volume to rest of song.
Capella vocals, Piano, some sort of wooden clicky instrument? Percussion, sort of a ringing instrument but I don't know what that is - gives a rippling sound. Backing vocals.
Chorus notes are much quicker than those used in verse which are more extended. Builds up tension in chorus that breaks in verse.
