*lemony snicket voice* police cars say ‘protect and serve’ for the same reason a box of dry, unflavoured rice cakes might say ‘delicious treat’. rice cakes are not a delicious treat, nor are the police there to protect and serve, but if you are unfamiliar with either you’re likely to believe what you’re told.

A series of unfortunate events? More like Lemony Snicket gets cockblocked and won’t let anyone forget it even when she’s not only married but also dead

My fav part in 13SI that never fails to make me snicker. There are other interpretations of this of course, but I like to think Lemony "I'm very good at reading and manipulating people" Snicket accidentally stepped on a Bad Topic Landmine while trying to innocently compliment Moxie.

“I’m a journalist, Snicket. A dangerous story is an interesting story, and interesting stories belong in the newspaper.”

i’m in my kitchen making evil meals… for instance i just made offensive oatmeal with atrocious apple and calamitous cinnamon topping. yesterday i made spiteful shrimp stir fry with a side of pernicious pickles. tomorrow i might make a heinous hamburger. and so on.

i like how writing realistic worlds and characters is so important for so many writers to the point where they agonize over it. meanwhile lemony snicket was just like “death to reality. im gonna write this whole ass series and with god as my witness, absolutely fucking NOBODY is gonna act like a person.”

Which of Lemony Snicket’s characters are LGBTQ+?
Tumblr media
The subject of queer representation in children’s books remains a highly controversial matter to this day. It doesn’t stop some authors from trying or from playing with the rules. There is indeed a long tradition in classical literature of “coded queerness”, or rather of characters whose deviation from the accepted norms of sex and gender is only implied through symbols, allusions or unreliable narration.
It’s not as if the subject were taboo to Daniel Handler. The author has testified to sexual experiences with both/several genders (Link - skip to 0:52:00) and there’s a number of queer characters in his more “adult” novels: Tomas from “Adverbs”, Douglas from “The Basic Eight”, etc. How does that translate to the books he’s written under the name of Lemony Snicket?
As often in children’s literature, the matter is rather timidly present but not totally absent either. Let’s delve deeper into the subject after the cut.
