Steven Universe Criticism, and My Opinions On It.

Oh boy.

This is going to get controversial.

I’m just going to say this right off the bat, I don’t mean to offend anyone in making this post, I just wanted to make my opinions on the Steven Universe criticism clear, for future reference. In no way do I intend to hate on any person or group, in fact, I’m really on both sides here.

So here is my opinion.

I think Steven Universe is a good show.

There. I mean, I must like it if I’m willing to make a blog primarily dedicated to analyzing it, (along with other media, but mostly Steven Universe,) right?

Do I think it’s a perfect show? Of course not. I can see where a lot of the critics are coming from, especially with season four. I should probably make another blog dedicated to season four by the way. (Add that to the list, lol.)

But seriously, am I willing to say that Steven Universe is one of the better cartoons airing currently? Of course! The concept is pretty original, the characters are interesting, the overarching plot is fascinating, and the slice of life episodes can still exist and be wonderfully charming, (though that was one of the problems with season four, once again, I will have to make a post about it.) It stands up there with Star vs the Forces of Evil, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Samurai Jack as my favorite cartoons airing currently.

Now, for the real topic of this post, the critics. Like I’ve said before, I agree with a lot of what they’re saying. Steven Universe is nowhere near a perfect show, and there are problems. However, the nitpicking is where I stop.

I can understand the criticism, but nitpicking to the point where it doesn’t make sense is where I draw the line. I’m not saying all critics do this, it’s usually the opposite actually. Most of the time with critics, the points they bring up are actually valid concerns, and I can respect them for that.

Of course, this is just my silly opinion as usual. If you disagree, I’m totally alright with that. In fact, I’d love to hear your opinion on the matter. Educate me!

Did Rose Shatter Pink Diamond?

Okay but seriously though.

I’ve been considering this question for quite a while now. I’ve been looking at both sides of the story, looking at proof for either way, and, yeah, I think Rose did it.

First of all, let’s talk about Jasper. The main reason we know this event occurred in the first place. It’s obvious she had a passion for her leader, considering she doesn’t even want Steven to save herself from being corrupted, because of his association with Rose.

Is it just me, or would it be extremely odd if Jasper had this much emotion over an event she wasn’t sure even happened? A lot of people who are saying that Rose didn’t do it, are claiming that it was a cover up for someone else, but how would that work? Someone would have to see something they shouldn’t have, considering how many gems there would be in Pink Diamond’s court. Are we really supposed to believe that everyone is just taking this as the gospel truth, if she didn’t do it, just because someone claimed she did? Gems aren’t stupid. How many people would know about this cover up anyways?

Besides, is it really fair to start a whole war on someone based on an act it’s uncertain if they even did? Don’t they have courts for these things? Eyewitness testimonies?

What I’m trying to get at is in order for Jasper to believe that this event did occur, because, let’s face it, she’s not stupid, it had to be a very public affair in order for everyone to accept it.

Eyeball even confirms this further. Once again, one could say that’s because she doesn’t know any better, but the crystal gems haven’t even tried to deny it!

I mean, if someone was accusing one of my greatest friends of an act that they didn’t commit thousands of years ago, wouldn’t I want to say something in defense of them? Even if it was a cover up, it was thousands of years ago!

No, instead the gems have a very pained reaction to the accusation, one may argue of guilt for lying to Homeworld.

Then again, what reason would the gems have to lie about shattering her? It only ended up making things worse.

I think their reactions are of actual guilt of Rose shattering Pink Diamond. It would make the most logical sense, after all.

It could also give some context to why Rose was so against the Breaking Point. She didn’t want to make the same mistakes she did in the past.

Of course, this is my opinion, my very messily organized opinion, at that. If we’re being entirely honest, I really really REALLY want Rose to have shattered Pink Diamond. I’d love for her to not be the perfect saint the gems claim her to be, and I like how they’re already starting to address that in show.

Who knows, maybe we’ll finally get our answer in the next Stevenbomb.

i mean, i know sadie is in danger as well. and onion isn’t exactly my favorite character.

with that why don’t i give my analysis of the promo?

SHIT IS ABOUT TO GO DOWN

DON’T GIVE ME THAT CUTESY STEVEN AND CONNIE STUFF (actually please do i enjoy it quite a lot,) I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TRYING TO HIDE

First of all, I think it should be worth noting that they give us that vital flashback to the Zoo arc. It further establishes what is likely to happen in this bomb. It causes you to remember that one Yellow Diamond line. You know the one.

“Then there’s still time.”

I will admit, it’s odd how this hasn’t been addressed earlier, but I’m willing to let that slide for now. You can look at all though SU critic blogs if you want to hear commentary on season four, and pacing, and whatnot.

CN YOU CAN’T HIDE THE TRUTH FROM ME

I’m calling it right now. This is going to be the vehicle of transportation for the two new gems being introduced, the Homeworld gems. Why else would they show this ride? Sure, it could be to set the mood, but of course, I want to see something more.

It’s obvious what’s happening here. Sadie goes missing, blah blah blah. Can we just talk about the way the promo presents this scene in general? Honestly, it’s masterfully chilling, with Sadie walking into the darkness, and Steven narrating, confused, “Sadie never came home last night?”

I also think the soundtrack at this part really amplifies the mood as well, SERIOUSLY I CAN’T PRAISE THIS SHOW’S SOUNDTRACK ENOUGH I SHOULD MKE ANOTHER POST DEDICATED PURELY TO SOUNDTRACK APPRECIATION

but anyways.

Ah yes. The only time we see Garnet in this entire promo. I find this rather intriguing, as it could mean multiple things. One, the most likely, they didn’t want to put in as many Garnet shots. But what’s the fun in that?

There’s also a possibility that another The Return will be pulled, and Ruby and Sapphire will be poofed. Also interesting, especially when you consider the possible parallels that could be produced to the hand ship’s arrival. This could be something that motivates Steven to give himself up to the diamonds, (which I’ll get to in a sec.)

After all, is it really realistic steven will do it out of the kindness of his heart?

okay maybe it sort of is it’s steven after all, BUT I WANT TO SPICE THINGS UP

I’m willing to bet that this has something to do with the two new gems. (I’m not going to say their names for spoiler’s sake.) After all, Connie is totally panicked, and even Steven looks pretty distressed. If this was just some normal corrupted gem, I can make a safe bet they would be slightly calmer. Not entirely calm, but much less panicked than they are now. You dig?

There is a lot of speculation on who Steven is trying to call. I’m willing to conclude that it’s Greg, not Sadie, for one reason. The promo says “Sadie never came home last night?” Why would he wait until the next evening to try and contact her?

On that note, PLEASE DON’T LET GREG TO BE TAKEN AGAIN, I DON’T THINK MY HEART COULD STAND IT

Then we see an Onion missing poster. Obvious enough meaning, so I didn’t screenshot it.

A lot of people say Pearl is crying because of what Steven is about to do/ what Steven just did. I mostly agree with them on that, it makes the most logical sense.

I’d like to propose another teory. A much likely one, but, god, I would die of both happiness and despair if it became true.

Mystery Girl, as mentioned multiple times in Last One Out Of Beach City, looking startlingly like a Rose Quartz. All of the Rose Quartzes are either shattered or bubbled in the room we see Blue Diamond in, in That Will Be All, (at least, that’s what can be inferred.)

Imagine the diamonds find a human who looks so much like a Rose Quartz, it’s uncanny? They’re going to want to take that human and investigate.

Just a really far fetched guess, but all the same, if it came true, I would collapse.

Exactly Steven.

Same color palette as the scene with Pearl in the water and Steven on hisphone, but notice that Pearl’s hair isn’t wet. I’m sure that gem clothing and hair doesn’t dry magically in the span of afew seconds, so this leads me to believe that the scene with Pearl in the water takes place after Steven beams himself up. (a la BEAM ME UP SCOTTY)

Okay, so there’s a lot going on here. First of all, note that this light is yellow. This will be important later.

Second, notice how not only is Steven leaving of his own free will, he’’s giving the thumbs up. It’s obvious that he isn’t being taken, and if I had to guess, this could be some deal arranged with the two new gems? (not saying their names for spoilers sake.)

This is all speculation, after all.

Honestly, I think Steven should be grateful he wasn’t just knocked out and whisked away into space.

OKAY SO BACK TO THIS SCENE

Notice how the entire scene seems to be basked in, you guessed it, yellow light.

Okay, one could argue that this is simply daytime, hence the lighting. However, why would the two gems take Onion away in broad daylight? It’s kidnapper 101, especially considering this area seems wide open.

No, it makes more sense that the light we’re seeing is coming from the ship Steven is entering, which could also be the ride seen earlier in the promo. There are quite a lot of connections to be made, aren’t there?

“She wouldn’t have wanted this. But I do.”

Steven is turning himself in. End of discussion.

NOW WE GET TO THE INTERESTING PART

I really believe, like many people, that this is one of the gems that has come to find Steven. (once again, no names.) Confused, they might try to find Steven’s dad by saying my dad, instead of, you know, Greg. Because that’s the only way they know him, my dad.

Of course, I will die of laughter if this turns out to be Onion's voice. No wonder he hasn’t talked. Whatever the case, I simply can’t wait until MAY FREAKING THE 8TH

WOF and it’s depth.

I’ve got to make a confession. Are you ready?

I actually enjoy Wings of Fire more than Warriors.

OKAY LET ME EXPLAIN

First of all, I want this Tumblr to be more than a Steven Universe theory blog. I feel there are many more passions I can expand to, and while Steven Universe will be my primary focus, gosh, I’ve got to comment about how brilliant this series is.

And yes, I am going to address why I like it more than warriors. I know you’re all dying to know.

So, some context, if you will. You may have heard of this series, you may not have. Either way, here’s a summary of the series I grabbed from the Wings of Fire Wiki, (because I’m awful at these things.)

oh by the way, there probably will be spoilers, fyi.

Books 1-5: The dragons of Pyrrhia are divided — and only the five dragonets foretold in a prophecy can unite the seven warring tribes and bring peace and understanding among them. The books by Tui T. Sutherland tell their story.

Books 6-10: The dragons of Pyrrhia are at peace after the war, but a new prophecy has arisen, and the dragons who are trying to fulfill it are the Jade Winglet: Moonwatcher, Winter, Qibli, Kinkajou, Peril and Turtle. They must keep a wary eye out for Darkstalker, Onyx, and Chameleon. Those three are all enigmas, and could turn against them at any time. The new dragonets must fulfill their prophecy- to find the 'Lost City of Night', in order to stop thunder and ice from destroying Jade Mountain!

So, sounds innocent enough, right? Well, it’s the exact same trap Warriors places. At first, I believed that Warriors was going to be a cutesy series about kitty cats in the forest thinking they’re going through prophecies and arguing over catnip.

As many of you will know, that turned out entirely wrong. And I was all for it.

It’s pretty much the same with Wings of Fire as well. Of course, Tui T Sutherland, who worked as Erin Hunter, wrote the series, so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised.

This series can get extremely intense at times. It took paths I never expected it to go. It introduced concepts that were not only interesting, but posed intriguing questions about humanity, (and yes, I know, it’s a book about dragons. That’s what makes it even better.)

Let’s take an early example in the series. It’s sort of spoilerly, I guess? Not really, but if you want to remain entirely unspoiled for the series, you probably want to click off now.

So, one of the main struggles the protagonist of the first novel, Clay, faces include the expectations his mentors, who after seeing him supposedly attack the other eggs, believe he has raw fighting potential. However, Clay, as you may have guessed, isn’t all that into battling, much more fascinated by eating.

Another problem he faces is never knowing his parents, and the worries he has about them. He believes that they really do miss him, and that when he does come home, they’ll welcome him with open arms, even throwing a party.

Both of these problems are resolved in the same visit. Clay finally visits the Mud Kingdom, and discovers his parents. Instead of them being estatic at seeing him again, they are rather indifferent on the matter. It turns out that his mother willingly gave his egg up for merely two cows in return. In fact, she’s not even happy that her son is back, she’s more worried if the cows will have to be returned. It’s quite a gut punch to Clay, proof that things in life aren’t as fairy-tale perfect as we wish they could be.

As for the issue with the eggs, it’s also revealed that Clay’s intent wasn’t actually to harm the other dragonets. In Mudwing society, the oldest sibling is known as the bigwings, and one of the things the bigwings are known for is helping out their siblings of their shells, by cracking them. However, the dragons who were watching over Clay mistook this for violent behavior, despite the fact it was simply an act of love. You get the picture.

Why did I just mention all that? I dunno.

Peridot fusion possibilities?

It’s undeniable. Peridot is going to have a fusion at one point. Not only is it going to show her development as a character, it will most likely be used to cement her status as a crystal gem. It’s the most logical step for the show to take with her character.

The question is, who and when? For the when, if I had to make a logical guess, its going to happen when the crystal gems are in a really dire situation, (the diamonds perhaps?) and it’s the only way for the battle to be won.

Of course, there are plenty of other opportunities for a Peridot fusion, but that isn’t going to be the main topic of this post. The real question is who it’s going to be with.

MY PERSONAL LIST IN ORDER OF LIKELINESS

+Garnet and Peridot

+A fusion like the temple fusion, including Peridot.

+Lapis and Peridot

+Amethyst and Peridot

+Steven and Peridot

Garnet and Peridot

I personally feel this fusion is the most likely, especially since they have attempted to fuse before in the show. I can see Garnet being the one to help Peridot along with fusion, and thus being her first fusion. As for the gem, maybe Watermelon Tourmaline?

I do know for a fact that the design would be so epic if they did fuse, based on the ones I’ve seen.

A fusion like the temple fusion, including Peridot

I consider this a likely possibility as well, based on my idea that Peridot is going to end up fusing in an emergency. An enemy could attack that needs a massive fusion to face, and perhaps Peridot decides to help out, as a crystal gem.

Don’t ask me about what the gem is the mere thought gives me a headache.

Lapis and Peridot

Now, I know for a fact this is first on a lot of people’s lists for Peridot’s fusions, mainly because of Lapidot hype. However, I don’t consider this fusion as likely as the others, mainly because of Lapis. It doesn’t make logical sense, based on her experience as Malachite, to waant to rush into another fusion.

Do I think it’s going to happen at one point? Heck yeah. Do I think it’s going to happen soon? Not really.

As for the gem, Turquoise sounds pretty good, right?

Amethyst and Peridot

Earlier in the show, I would have given this fusion more likely of an opportunity. But now? I don’t know, compared to the other possibilities on this list, it doesn’t seem as likely. Peridot and Amethyst simply don’t have as much interaction anymore. Besides, if Peridot wanted to learn to fuse, I think she would go with someone else to teach her to do it.

Of course, this is just my personal opinion, and I really would love to see an Amethyst and Peridot fusion as much as the next gal.

As for the gemstone, I really like Fluorite.

Steven and Peridot

Ah, for the final one, the least likely one, in my opinion. Why do I say this? Well, first of all, Steven is new to fusing with gems. It’s much more likely that he’d want to branch out more with Garnet and Pearl instead of going to Peridot, as she’s new to fusion as well.

Then again, one might argue that this is why they’d fuse, a they’re both new to the process, but my thinking is a bit different. Besides, if they did fuse, who knows how stable the fusion would be?

I would wait for both of them to become more exprienced in the art of fusing before attempting to fuse, which is why it’s at dead last on my list.

For the gem, I would say Watermelon Tourmaline, but I already said that for Garnet and Peridot, so...

Lion 4: Alternate Ending Speculation

At this point, we know practically nothing about the episode, except, of course, it’s the sequel to the famed Lion series. (Lion 2: The Movie, Lion 3: Straight to Video, etc.) Knowing anything about the episodes, we can make a reasonable guess that this episode is going to involve Lion in some way, and we can also assume we’ll learn something about Rose.

This would make logical sense, as the whole “Rose shattered Pink Diamond” problem has barely been explained. It would be the ideal thing to do for the show to confirm or deny the event happening in this episode.

If I had to guess how this is done, I think, like a lot of people, that Steven is finally going to look in the treasure chest in Lion’s mane. Whatever is in the chest, (I’m hoping for another tape, personally,) is going to explain what happened with Pink Diamond to Steven, so he can get some closure.

However, if this does happen, I think the title would be interesting to note.

Lion 4: Alternate Ending.

Alternate ending (British English: alternative ending) is a term used (usually in movies) to describe the ending of a story that was planned or debated but ultimately unused in favor of the actual ending.

Okay, so this can mean one of two things, depending on what you believe about Rose shattering Pink Diamond. The alternate ending could be Pink Diamond not being shattered, and the actual shattering could be an accident. I could see this being a possibility, especially considering how distressed the crystal gems seem when Eyeball brings up Pink Diamond’s shattering in Back to the Moon. Pearl’s face definitely seems like one of guilt.

That, or if you believe Rose didn’t do it, the alternate ending could be Rose shattering Pink Diamond, and she actually didn’t do it. The guilt of the crystal gems could be for having to lie and say that she did. It doesn’t make as much sense as the other theory, but you can believe what you want to believe.

Or, you know, the episode is going to just be a Beach City episode. Nothing wrong with those. It would be disappointing, but I would live.

Rose in the Room, Real or Fake?

This question has plagued me ever since the episode Storm in the Room aired. It seems the answer should be simple enough. No, that Rose was merely a creation of the room, the Crewniverse have stated multiple times before that Rose is not coming back. I know that. I believe that.

Yet again, something in Rose’s final lines, before she disappears, seems so raw, so real. The Rose we see in the rest of the episode is a stark contrast to the Rose seen previously. Her facial expressions before have an artificial feel to them, the audience can clearly tell that this Rose is a product of the room.

Yet, at the line, “Steven, you know that isn't true. In the tape I left you, I told you I how much I wanted to have you and let you exist. Do you think what I said to you in the tape was a lie?”, she seems much more raw and real. Sure, I’m willing to accept that the room was telling Steven what he wanted to hear, but the possibility of Rose being able to communicate with Steven through the room doesn’t seem too farfetched.

This is especially considering Steven says next, “I get it. I know you didn't want me to deal with your problems. You're a part of me now. I have to deal with what you left behind.”

Rose is a part of Steven. What better place to communicate than inside the one room that literally comes into being because of Rose's gem?.

That, and I really want more Rose. It’s kind of a problem.
