the fun thing about english/literature class is that no matter your feelings towards english/literature as a subject, there is always That One Fucking Short Story that you remember decades later because holy hotdogs that was a fucked up thing to make a 10th grader read
#hoo boy they really fucked us up at my school#seventh grade:#the giver#harrison bergeron#eighth:#the tell-tale heart#ninth:#the scarlet ibis#a sound of thunder#the most dangerous game#harrison bergeron again#tenth:#lamb to the slaughter#the lottery#another ray bradbury one that fucked me up#gonna say it- of mice and men shouldn't have been taught to fucken tenth graders#eleventh:#a rose for emily#i dodged out of a compulsory class (taught by my g9 teacher who hated me)#but the students in that class had to read an article on the meat packing industry#i snagged a copy and it almost made me throw up#long story short ray bradbury can fuck himself#twelfth: basically take every traumatic-ass story listed and then some and throw em all together#the giver has a lot of teachable stuff but shouldn't have been given to seventh graders#debatable how wise it was to give animal farm to ninth graders#in a school where commie is an insult to half the populace and a compliment to the other half

literally so many of the jokes in mash make more sense if u think hawkeye is queer like. at all times in the show we are meant to see the generals/bureaucrats as the butt of the joke, as the people we are making fun of; and the people who are actually affected by the war (especially minorities) as victims who are surviving despite the actions of those with more power than them. every time hawkeye adopts gay stereotypes, or propositions a general, or flirts w col. flagg, the original intention was obviously poking fun at gay men and hawkeye’s femininity, but that goes against the central concept of the show. if u see hawkeye’s queerness as genuine, then the humor comes from the fact that none of the straight people are picking up on it, or if they are, they’re doing a shit job of discouraging it. flagg calls him gay and his response is basically “yeah i am and u wanna fuck me so bad it makes u look stupid.” which is a joke that objectively makes more sense when it’s aimed at flagg rather than the abstract concept of gay men.
also they do This Exact Thing with hawkeye’s communism liberalism, and then keep conflating communism with queerness at any opportunity for eleven seasons straight.
genuinely cannot fathom how all these guys in the 60s-70s created some of the best queer men that have ever aired on television on accident. i am going to college to learn how to do what a couple guys named gene did without even meaning to
