My dad's bull is a sweetheart. But hes still been ringed. When bulls are in rut they're incredibly difficult to handle. They smell females who are of breeding age, and attempting to put yourself between them can cause major injuries. Cows are generally soft and mild mannered. But Bulls get aggressive when it comes to their females. They are 1000 lb animals and don't mean to hurt you most of the time. But do on accident.
That being said. Minos likely had it done to make it easier to pull him to the labyrinth. As in mythos Pasiphae was allowed to keep him until he was independent of her in a nurturing way. He likely was big enough that Minos felt threatened.
Or in contrast, he might have done it to humiliate his mother and him by extension. Asterius keeping it in death seems to be him owning what was done to him. Showing no one can make him feel ashamed, other than himself.

Why do cows (or bulls??) get rings in their noses? The reason it's done to pigs is to stop them tearing people's gardens (and their own pens) to complete shit and as far as I remember is actually not cruel apparently? As long as you give them a lot of other things to keep them entertained and give them lots of daily activities. (I know pigs are one of those hell-pets like rabbits) but why is it done to bulls? As far as I know Bulls don't tear up gardens or dig with their noses?
for cattle it’s apparently done both to wean them by discouraging them from suckling, and for handling: "The nose ring assists the handler to control a dangerous animal with minimal risk of injury or disruption by exerting stress on one of the most sensitive parts of the animal, the nose. Bulls, especially, are powerful and sometimes unpredictable animals which, if uncontrolled, can kill or severely injure a human handler. Control of the bull may be done by holding the ring by hand, looping a piece of rope through it, clipping on a bull staff.”

Can't help but have feelings about how Pasiphae named Asterius/Asterion.
She specifically named him that. I can't sit here and not comprehend the reasoning.
Anyone who knows the myth of Minos before the minotaur. Knows, that Europa was defiled by Zeus in the disguise of a bull. Which created Minos and his siblings. When Zeus tired of her, he abandoned her and their children, and the king of Crete at the time found her. Asterion.
He fell in love with Europa and saw her kids as his own. They never had kids between them. So when he died they became in line for the throne.
Disregarding the fact that he pissed in the pool he was about to step in with the bull thing and the banishment of his siblings, passing through the myth.
Pasiphae had a son by the bull, and knowing her son was an oddity and her husband may try and separate them or kill him. She named him after the one man Minos seemed to care about. The man who stepped up as stepfather to raise him when he had no true father.
As if Pasiphae, a woman in a time where no one listened to women. Was trying her best to protect her child of misfortunate birth. By reminding Minos of his own.

Addendum: for those who think I was babying her? 17 is not a small child's age, I should have better stated it, maybe used 'kid' instead of 'child'. But honey, if you're still a minor, you're a kid. Not an adult. And I don't trust these people not to try and do something gross when she's at one of her most vulnerable stages of growth.
So this is probably gonna drop, or get met with hate but. I let my 17 year old niece play ESO on one of my profiles. Level 100. So it wasn't a high level player, but still.
She wants to play a dungeon and I'm not going anywhere so I'm like "yeah go ahead. Uncle Vin will stay right here."
Luckily I did. Because as soon as she got into the battle 4 players at 810 turned on their mic's and started harassing her. Let me tell you something. She's played this game before. She by no means sucks. They're just way higher leveled, and with my job taking most of my time I don't have that play luxury.
They wanted her to be the tank, and expected her to do everything while they stood around, making fun of the character, the build, saying she was weak. Etc etc.
Now, I want to again, say, kids don't belong in adult settings. But that means settings where they could be subjected to situations a child shouldn't be. Such as p*rn or drugs or extreme violence. Not a video game specifically catering to a teens age (not saying us oldies can't enjoy it) So, why, (easily seen as male adults from the timbre of their voice as they shouted at her) adults so keen on harassment? Maybe it was just because they were way higher and joined a dungeon just to be shitty. Either way. If you do this. You're a piece of shit, to a child or not. You shouldn't bully other players.
That being said. I took the controller and left the dungeon so they could suffer on their own.
