Red.
Red had always been his favorite color.
โ€”-
"Daddy, look! Lookโ€™it what i found!" 5 year old Russo ran down the garden path to his father, who smiled and swung him in a wide circle in his arms.
"What a nice flower." Link praised, earning a delighted giggle in reply. The carnation was indeed lovely, its deep red petals undamaged and yet to wilt from being plucked.
"It's for mamaโ€, young Rosso said, playing with the flower petals gently. The two stood there for a while, Russo admiring his flower and his father soaking in the peaceful moment.
โ€”-
Griff's talons were coated in red, his beak stained and dripping the substance. The red pooled at their feet, blooming like a twisted flower, the puddle spreading from both the bird and his son.
His son. His eldest child. His baby boy.
Russo laid prone on the ground, where Griff had dropped him and collapsed next to his rider. His son was too pale, armor coated in his own blood, eyes wide open but unseeing.
No.
Link didn't hear his wife's cry of dispair. He hardly registered as she ran to the bodies on the ground. There was two, he realized, but he couldn't bring himself to care for anything beyond his son.
Please, no.
Everything was red. The ground, his hands, his son and his loftwing, and now Zelda's dress as she held their son to her chest, saying something that Link couldn't hear over the ringing in his ears.
He's gone.
Red had been Russo's favorite color, link thought again. How wickedly poetic his life ended bathed in it.
Stumbling towards the corpse of his fallen son, Link fell to his knees, pants soon soaked in the puddle of blood. It was cold now. It wasn't supposed to be cold. His son's hand shouldn't be cold to the touch. His gaze shouldn't be so vacant. Russo shouldn't be lying there, unmoving as his mother wailed her heartache to the heavens.
Please, goddesses. This can't be how this ends. Not like thisโ€ฆ
Russo was cold. Goddesses, he was so cold. Link shook, tears falling freely as he clutched at his son's lifeless hand, a dull, cold ache in his chest as he silently mourned his loss. He lifted his son's hand to his lips and placed a gentle kiss there, bowing his head as a sob escaped his chest.
With a final echoing screech, Griff breathed his last, leaving a grieving mother and father alone with the last remnants of their son.
The blood swirled into patterns along Zelda's white dress, like carnations blooming in the spring.
Russo had always liked red.
It was his favorite color.

Russo murmured his thanks, then silence stretched out among the three royals. It was uncomfortable and heavy, thick with words that begged to be said, but were wrong in the moment.
Soon, they were back in familiar halls. Russo hadn't realized that Farola and he had run so far into the castle. He recognized the corner where they had run past time, and fortunately, the elder hero wasn't there to add onto Russo's wounded pride.
That's something he had noticed recently, and he pondered it as he walked. The children of the heroes were often prone to some form of ego, himself included, and he wondered idly if it was genetic. Silas definitely did not have one, not in the same way, at least.
Eventually, his musings were cut short when the door to the room he shared with Silas loomed in front of him.
Russo sighed and rubbed his eyes before getting back to his writing. The letters he had been putting off to the twins had to be done now, while the group had some downtime. He also had to catalog what he had done the past few days, just as a way to remember the events. And he had to write a report for Impa. And a list of things he needed to restock on. And fix Oriol's stuffed lamb. And see if Silas needed any-
"Goddesses, don't do that!" He hissed when a hand rested on his shoulder, looking up at Farola from his seat in the library. The princess had come up behind him while he thought, and she had a concerned look in her eye, although her face betrayed nothing.
"Your eyebags could rival Sky's," The Captain tsked, eyes gazing intensely at his eyes. "And I will not be having you write while this unaware of your surroundings."
Her hand on his shoulder was firm but did not hurt, it was a reminder of her place beside him (she also wanted to make sure the man didn't topple over in exhaustion at any moment) as she let her words sink in. But she didn't make a move to grab or manhandle him, she was letting him make the first move.

"Get yourself a giant bird." Russo said with a slight smirk at his friend. "Flying is a workout, especially when your loftwing is like mine."
He slowly, painfully, started moving forward, positioning Farola in between him and Nayati. The three began to walk back down the hall, keeping the slow pace Russo was setting. The prince carefully positioned himself so neither royal would be behind him, always completely in eyesight. Farola knew better than to move into his blind spot when he was upset, and she wordlessly dissuaded Nayati from trying to move behind the young man.
"...do you have any dried flowers from your collection I could send the twins?" Russo asked Farola as they walked. "I want to send them little gifts with the letters, but I lost the feathers I was going to give them."
Russo sighed and rubbed his eyes before getting back to his writing. The letters he had been putting off to the twins had to be done now, while the group had some downtime. Russo's eyes flashed with an uncharacteristic anger for a few moments, then settled back into a neutral gaze. Something in his chest screamed to fight it, to resist the command. To remind the prince that he was not, in fact, Russo's superior as in this Era, he was technically long dead.
Instead, the prince slowly stood, refusing the offered hand, and brushed his pants down, body angled away from both Farola and Nayati to shield his belongings from them. He blinked owlishly at Nayati, wordlessly asking, 'What now?'
Was the prince going to carry through with his threat? Was he bluffing? How far would he go? Russo was standing, sure, but he was far from giving up.

The younger prince couldn't help how he bristled at the tone, eyes narrowing slightly and arms tightening around his bag. That was a tone of voice only his father had ever used with Russo, and it never failed to send the young man into a challenging mood.
Catching himself before he started an argument, Russo took a breath and stood his ground, lips pursed and back straight.
"I need to get these completed." He said firmly, careful to remain respectful. "I will sleep when they are done, thank you."
Farola clearly disagreed with his choice of action, if her look at her brother was any indication.

"I am quite alright." Russo brushed off the concern, pulling himself to his feet smoothly and hugging his belongings to his chest in an unconsciously defensive posture. "There are still things I need to complete tonight while we remain here. I have no assurance that a portal won't wisk us off to another Hyrule tonight, so my tasks must be completed tonight."
Why were they so concerned about this? He had things to get done, and he knew both royals surely had sacrificed sleep for efficiency before. Why was it so important to them?

Russo blinked a bit, still startled by the abrupt presence of the two royals, but quickly composed himself.
"Ah, your highness." He said smoothly, standing up with his belongings and bushing his hair from his face as if nothing had happened. "I was just getting some reports and letters written to send home. What can I do for you?"

Russo took deep, even breaths as he buried his head in his knees and covered the back of his neck with his hands. It was only Farola and Nayati. He was hiding, yes, but he wasn't in danger. He just had to remember that, and he'd be fine.
His heart lept to his throat with each footstep, unable to determine what direction they were coming from. Worst case scenario, he thought, he had the one knife on him that he always carried...
No, none of that. The prince shook his head, warding off his anxious thoughts and fighting back the urge to arm himself. It was just Farola and Nayati. Just the two royals. Not the-
Russo couldn't help the anxious cry he let out when something touched his hair, and he struck out with his legs, nailing Farola's unguarded shin with his boots.

The prince's head popped up, and he almost knocked over his candle in his haste to pick up his belongings. He had completed the letters to the twins and was halfway through the report to Impa, but it seemed his time had run out.
He blew out the candle, and the hall descended into darkness again, his little light having been the only illumination in that area. He hid behind an armchair he had found somewhere along the way down the hall, nestled in between a window and a bookcase, and sat, on edge, as he listened to footsteps echo in the area.

Russo sped around the corner, narrowly missing the elder hero, and ran off without a word to the man. Time watched in growing confusion as the two disappeared down the halls of the castle, then shook his head with a world weary sigh. Maybe the kids were right, he was too old for this.
Russo chased after Farola for a while longer before a realization hit him. He slowed to a stop, standing in a hall he was unfamiliar with, and looked around. Farola had lost him, but he still had a chance. The young man, yawning again, clutched his journal to his chest and padded down another dark hall quietly, stealing a candle from a candle holder and using it to light his way deeper into the unknown part of the castle. He could get some more work done while Farola ratted him out, at least.

Russo screamed wordlessly as he chased her, putting all his waning energy into chasing her down, despite his body begging for rest. He had already been overworking himself, and this strenuous exercise was not doing him any favors.
The two ran down both familiar and unfamiliar corridors, passing servants and nobles and soldiers alike, although much too fast for the two to be identified. It was so out of character for the two normally composed royals that most could never guess the 2 forms identities.

"...Farola, you-" He cut himself short, knowing that she would, in fact, tell her brother.
"NO!" He cried, trying to grab the back of her shirt to stop her, a futile endeavor as she immediately broke into a sprint and charged out the library doors.

"I will return to the sleeping chambers when I so please." Russo said calmly, eyes glinting in displeasure. He wasn't often so irritable, which was another sign of his weariness.
This was ridiculous. He needed to get stuff done now. Work was always more important than his own needs, and he could handle staying awake for as long as he needed.
"Why are you so concerned, anyway." He muttered, irritation seeping into his words. "You'd do the same."

Russo sighed and turned back to the letters, moving the candle closer to the page so he could see. The corner of the library he had chosen was dark and offered a good, quiet hiding place.
"I need to complete these still. And there are other things that can't wait. We don't know when another portal will appear, so I prefer to get all my tasks done as soon as possible." He said evenly, blinking to try and ease the dryness in his eyes.

'It won't be~', a small voice in Russo's head giggled. He shook the thought off. Farola could clean up the mess. He didn't care if either of them were upset with him later. Honestly, sometimes he wondered if he was more like Silas than his own father. Not a bad thing, he thought.
"Oriol, hun, let's head back to town and see if we can find Silas, ok?" He called to the young girl, who giggled and ran up to him excitedly to be picked up. Russo bowed respectfully, Oriol gigging as she was jostled in his arms.
"It was a pleasure to meet you. Till we meet again." He said with a smile, walking to the entrance of the garden with Oriol in his arms.
The Chain, having just arrived in Farola's era but a few hours ago, was now somewhat scattered across Hyrule Castle. When they first arrived, Farola was the on to take lead and usher them to castle in hopes of telling her parents of her home coming before rumours did. Now, after Farola was able to tearfully reunite with her beloved parents, the Heroes had requested to having a counsel with the King and Queen about...A great many things. It was going to be a long, and rather tense conversation so the older heroes allowed the young decadents to leave if they wish. Farola, not wishing to leave her parents after just being reunited, gave the three the directions to her room if they wished to stay there.
After arriving at the princess's room, it was clear to all of them that staying in such a lavish room for too long would get quite stuffy for them. So, shortly after entering the room the younger boy, Silas, quickly found an excuse to leave and explore the castle, leaving the young girl and prince to themselves.
Russo saw the way Oriol grew restless as she explored the captain's room, and he knew if he didn't get the kid out into a less...expensive place that some thing might end up a tad...misplaced.
Thankfully, Russo had remembered that Farola had a garden she took care of somewhere nearby her quarters, so with a new mission in mind the older prince scooped up Oriol and began the search. It wasn't a hard search as the smell of nature wasn't hard to miss in the dull halls of the castle, so when the prince found an out-of-the-way archway that smelled of wet soil and natural fragrance.
He could feel Oriol bounce excitedly in his arms as he slowly shoved open the large doors to reveal a beautifully overgrown courtyard. It was...a beautiful sight, one that Farola was surely downplaying in her descriptor of such a place! He was stood still in admiration as he scanned the bright foliage, he noted to himself to talk to Farola about all the sorts of flowers that grew here. But the bouncing Oriol soo became too much for the prince as she shook with a new wonder, so with a chuckle the prince placed the girl on the stone walk way and told her not to go too far before the girl raced off into the courtyard.
Russo watched the girl for a moment before shaking his head and slowly following behind the little one, his eyes much more focused on the plants thriving in the space.
"I'm sorry but--" A voice startles the prince who whips around to find the source. "Ah- My apologies! I had no intention in startling you."
Russo, faced with a handsome man in royal attire, can't help but get a strange feeling of deja-vu as he looks at the man. He looked...oddly familiar but not at the same time. He stands tall, head held high in a sense of self confidence but not egoistical, his kind blue eyes scanning Russo with a curious but cautious look in them.
"And who might you be?" The man asks, meeting Russo's gaze with a charming smile. "I haven't seen, or heard of new arrivals to the castle."
Russo gave a polite smile, eyes flitting momentarily to where Oriol was playing, she hadn't noticed the arrival of the man.
"Russo. Russo Audri." The prince said calmly, not mentioning who Oriol might be. He didn't want to give too much information, especially about the young girl, to just anyone. "We arrived a few hours ago, the others of my party are currently attending to affairs in the castle."
Now, Russo was no fool. He knew that this man had high standing in the castle, given his reagal yet relaxed posture. He assumed royal family, the man was confident in a way that screamed he didn't feel insecure about his place in the power scale.
Russo personally didn't mind that attitude, but he knew better than to trust people in power, being one himself in his own time.

Ooooh no. This is exactly what Russo had been trying to avoid. He had hoped against all sound reasoning that this wouldn't become his problem.
Deep down, he knew it couldn't be helped. Nayati was grieving a sister he didn't know was still alive. And that was, in part, Russo's fault now. Of course, it wasn't his place to say, and he wasn't comfortable enough with the man to spring major news on him, so he had some form of out when Farola came after him later?
"I understand." He replied truthfully, smile softening. "And I wish for your eventual peace." It was a common blessing in his time for grieving families. A way of saying,'I know you are hurt, but I hope it heals.'
It also, in this context, was him hoping Farola would fix this mess before he had to lie anymore. He was good, but it was a chore to keep doing.
The Chain, having just arrived in Farola's era but a few hours ago, was now somewhat scattered across Hyrule Castle.
