“A study in slavery” by Sweetinsane, where Sherlock and Mycroft were sold into slavery as kids after their parents died. As an adult, Sherlock is given to John as part of his war pension. Their dynamic is quite interesting and this fic received a great response, although sadly, it has been left unfinished.
Do you have any fics with child slave fics where it isn't sexual? Just an AU where one of them is taken in by someone else as a slave, but the person who takes them in is sorta against slavery as a whole? So there's just healing and comfort? Sorry and thanks.
Hey friend, sorry I don’t really know of a Sherlock fic where someone is taken in as a child slave.  Perhaps if others have a good idea, they could chime in!

And lets not forget his acute smelling sense (determining that dirty laundry is 3 days old by sniffing) and his acute awareness of sound vs silence when he literally “hears” peoples` thoughts - telling Greg his thinking is annoying him. Its often a symptom of autism to have exceptionally sharp senses as well as sensitivity.
Sherlock is autistic
- in the season 4 teaser that was shown on the Stephen Covert show, John and Lestrade are making a joke that Sherlock explicitly says he doesn’t get. Its extremely common among autistic people to have a very odd sense of humour/not get jokes when they’re obviously being made.
- In The Hounds of Baskerville Lestrade and John have a conversation about it: L: I suppose he likes having all the same faces back together. Appeals to his…his… J: Aspergers?
- People with autism often obsess over things: - Pirates, as a child - Crimes in general, or each separate case, depending on how you look at it - John, to an extent
- A lot of autistic people revert back into childhood obsessions/ways of talking, might be why he calls his mother ‘Mummy’
- He gets very excited about things: - When Lestrade comes with the fifth ‘suicide’ in asip - When Henry Knight comes with his case in thob
- He doesn’t eat a lot, this could be because he’s very specific about what the texture of the food is
- People with autism general have other conditions: - OCD, which Mycroft says Sherlock has in tab, - ADHD, which Sherlock also has (I couldn’t give you the reasons but, seriously) - Depression and anxiety, I think these are self explanatory
- Sherlock’s not very aware of other peoples personal space
- He doesn’t pick up on social queues
- He seems to talk ‘at’ people i stead of having a two-way conversation
- He doesn’t like/reacts negatively to being told what to do
- It’s common to not adapt the tone and content of your speech to different social situations if you’re autistic: - at John and Mary’s wedding he starts the speech very formally and quickly rather than casually, what is usual in that situation - when he’s talking to victims he’s often very unsympathetic
- He likes things to be a very certain way

@221bloodnun I`m glad you noticed those strange things Euros was saying on tape (from her interview with her doctor): “smiling is advertising (...) Happiness is a pop song.” I wouldn`t think she had access to anything that could make her aware of media and popular culture, but then I recalled Mycroft saying she had noticed Moriarty`s interest in Sherlock, which I guess she must have picked up from the media coverage of the Moriarty trial. Again, it shows how the entire Sherlock narrative was reflected in the media (even though the timing is off, since Mycroft said this 5 years ago in 2010, and back then Moriarty had not yet started his obsession with Sherlock, at least not in a way that was picked up by media.....I think)....
Sherlock and the media – Part II
When I wrote this meta about media’s role in BBC Sherlock, I wasn’t really planning to write a ‘Part II’ of it. But then all these great and thoughtful additions to it (see rb notes to the link above) were so inspiring that I can’t resist doing a follow-up. To me it’s easier to see patterns if I try to summarize and structure the various observations and comment on them topic-wise, as well as on a couple of things we seem to agree on. And please feel free to correct me if I’ve gotten anyone’s ideas wrong.
Tumblr media
1. The depiction of media in BBC Sherlock is indeed mostly negative
@whimsicalethnographies points out, in addition, that media has the potential to be a positive force in real life, but that’s often not the case; a free press is essential, but the ability to navigate it is just as important. There’s a “huge critique of the media AND the way we consume it” in this show.
And I fully agree with this; media can (and should) play an important investigative and educational role if and when it manages to be an independent source of information. But we mustn’t forget that most of the media is commercial, that its primary interest is to make money. Which means that when the choice stands between trying to be objective and respect people’s integrity on one hand, and bringing sensational news that sell on the other, the latter will often be priority. And as long as we as readers don’t apply critical thinking, a lot of dubious ideas and outright lies will pass for truth, and we’ll tend to consume them and believe them unquestioningly. And I think we see several examples of characters that fall for this in BBC Sherlock, with the results ranging from relatively harmless (Mrs Hudson is now convinced she should never wear the colour cerise because of something a celebrity said on the telly) to disastrous (The Chief superintendent of NSY proceeds to arrest a man who has helped them for years, based on speculations inside his corps and gossip in the media).
Tumblr media
So, source criticism is incredibly important.
I’ll leave the rest under the cut for more patient readers, because this is quite long. :)

and lets recall the scene in Magnussens office when John asks if the unconscious guard needs help and Sherlock replies “ex-con and white supremacist going by the tattoos, so who cares? Stick with Janine!” Sherlock both showing his heart AND voicing his political opinion in one sentence :-)
i fundamentally don’t understand the “john is the only thing keeping sherlock from turning into a mass murdering psychopath.”  sherlock likes helping people?  he smiled at amanda when she was excited that the jade pin was worth a fortune?  he genuinely wanted henry knight to understand what had happened to him and how it wasn’t his fault? he was the only one who could talk james sholto down from killing himself because he’s been there?  he’s a big fucking softie who has killed one person and that was literally for the safety of john watson?

He’s got my whole life story.
TRF
I have been wondering about this sentence since 2012 because we never learn anything about the very private things that are revealed in the article. No one ever mentions them. In TEH for example John does not even know Sherlock’s parents were alive. But this is not the most curious thing about the article.
Because at this point Jim had already met Eurus. I am quite sure that Jim did not say hello, recorded the videos, and went away. Eurus must have given him something in return and I suppose it was information about his beloved adversary. Which means that Mycroft as well as Eurus told Jim all about Sherlock’s life story.
Question: So what was in the infamous article by Kitty Riley? Neither Redbeard the dog nor Eurus, Victor Trevor, Uncle Rudi, the fire, nor anything else of importance could have been mentioned because then John and everyone else would have known about Sherlock’s past. And if Jim knew all about Sherlock, why did he not use it against him?
The only one who tried to use information about Sherlock’s childhood is Magnussen. Think of that.
@ebaeschnbliah, @sarahthecoat, @loveismyrevolution, @tjlcisthenewsexy
(via gosherlocked)
Great point ! Also, remember that Euros was taken away from Sherlock at a young age so the only personal information she could have about him would be from their shared childhood days, which does not entail “my whole life story”. Therefore I think Mycroft was the one who told Jim the info for the article. But Jim certainly knew about the sister and why he didn`t use that info against Sherlock, puzzles me. It would be just like him to say something devious like “I know who Redbeard really was and what happened”. I think what was in the article would just be details about his personal habits, his shampoo brand and shoe size etc. Like John said - it was the kind of things a friend would know about him. Except he didn`t have any friends besides John. And Mycroft did sort of admit to being the leak.

Fuck anyway I’m like… really deep back into Sherlock bc I’ve always adored the books and I finally watched the BBC version and it’s consuming my life again.
Anyway! If you’re a mostly Sherlock blog (any version is chill) I’d appreciate it if you reblogged/liked this so I can follow you. Please don’t interact with this if you’re just fetishising their relationship (think it’s “sin” or w/e). Critical blogs are also super great

Actually, if you are looking for a completely non-sexual, platonic spank fic, where John and Sherlock aren`t even a couple (yet!) but John disciplines Sherlock regularly through spankings, corner time and early bed time as a means of keeping him in control, here is a wonderful (very underrated) fic I would love to recommend: “Guiding hand” by seaholly (sorry, I do not know how to make those links). Its the loveliest Sherlock fanfic I`v ever read :-)
Any spanking fics? Nothing too heavy, but just Sherlock liking a bit of rough??
Tumblr media
HEEEeeey nonny, what a great ask! A few months ago, I had a request for non-sexual, domestic discipline spanking Sherlock fics. It was hard to find! Most of the spanking fics I found were in a BDSM relationship. I knew however, that someone would want those recs later! Thanks for asking!
SHERLOCK SPANKINGS – SEXUAL
Hit Me Again by codswallop, 1.4 k, explicit. Sherlock wants totry spanking. As always, where Sherlock goes, John will follow.
The Spanking byTindomerelhloni, 5 k, explicit, Problem: How do you go about telling your bestfriend that your deepest, darkest desire is being bent over his knee andspanked to orgasm? Solution: You don’t tell him. You get him mad, really, really mad.
The Schoolboy Error by orphan account, 5kexplicit. This is a great, kinky PWP. Sherlock is desperate to escapedetention. Doctor Watson offers him a choice of punishments. You get all sortsof kink here – watersports, medical kink, BDSM dom and sub, spanking. Thumbs upfor a fun thing that looks dubcon, and later turns out to be very consensual.
Sherlock and JohnAccidentally Negotiate a Scene by wendymarlowe, 4 k, explicit. John makes an idle threat that spins a bitout of control when Sherlock ends up tied to a chair, with John beingdelightfully creative, and Sherlock doing his darndest (and failing miserably)to stay aloof and unaffected. Which is hard when you have a lapful of verywarm, VERY horny flatmate.
Hit Me Again by codswallop, 1.4 k,explicit. Sherlock wants to experiement with spanking. How can John say no?(Part 3 of Masochism for Geniuses)
Sherlock Gets a Spanking byKeepCalmLoveSeverus, 1 k, explicit. Sherlock’s been very naughty and deserves aspanking.
The Day Sherlock Made Breakfast bythelookyouredoingthelookagain, 7 k, explicit. After Sherlock borrows John’s computeragain, he’s dying to confront John with the BDSM scenarios he saw. ObviouslyJohn has to punish him for snooping.
A Dozen More by lotherington, 2 k,explicit. PWP. John likes to take Sherlock apart.
Birthday Boy bytiger_in_the_flightdeck, 2 k, explicit. It’s Sherlock’s birthday, and John hasfound a perfect gift. For himself.

Actually, it would make sense if Redbeard had been a dog and Euros drowned him, since a missing dog would not lead to any sort of investigation like a missing child would HAVE to do. And Sherlock might have been told that the dog was put down as a milder version of the truth, and might still have been traumatized by its death, as many sensitive small kids might be. There is nothing incomprehensible about that, while the child in the well scenario was just absurd! How do you hush up something like that, and how do you keep it out of the press? Even if you are Mycroft Holmes and crossdressing Uncle Rudy ....
When Eurus thought he made Sherlock laugh all night but apparently he was screaming… where were Mummy, Daddy or Mycroft? Sherlock screamed all night and no-one heard it?! And why had Mummy said that they can’t make her tell where Victor was? It seems Eurus could get away with torturing his brother, cutting herself, killing a kid (all this at the age of five) – they only thought it was too much when she burned down the house…
I KNOW.
I KNOW NONNY.
I just hard time believing that parents like math genius Mummy and “John Watson” Daddy had a hard time figuring out what the hell was happening with the children.
Victor STILL bothers me – WHY DID NO ONE GO LOOKING FOR THE CHILD? DOES HE NOT HAVE PARENTS? The Holmeses should have had some sort of legal ramifications from that sort of thing. I’m sorry but if the supposed killer goes on and on about water, the first place I would check would be A WELL ON THE PROPERTY.
Ugh, the fact that we’re supposed to believe TFP at face value is ridiculous to me.

What kind of a doctor are you?
I know this question has been debated before in the fandom, regarding John Watson, the army doctor. He has always been the reliable medical doctor in every adaption of Sherlock Holmes as well as in the original stories. In BBC`s Sherlock he is described as a doctor with great skills, and every episode throughout the entire four seasons has some scene where his profession plays a part or is at least mentioned. Yet, its always a question of talking about it, not actually showing it. Its a TELL, DON`T SHOW narrative concerning John, which ends up a bit not good, IMO !
Let`s look at the different episodes. In ASIP it all starts with John having nightmares about the war and we see various soldiers getting shot at, but at no point does this dream scenario show us John doing surgery or taking care of the wounded, which would be a typical thing for an army doctor to have nightmares about. In this episode John himself confirms that he is a good doctor when Sherlock asks - very good, in fact ! We are TOLD but not SHOWN this fact. He does a bit of medical assessment over the body of the woman in pink, but nothing extraordinary, just the cause of death and not smelling any alcohol on her, which I think Sherlock himself could have figured out. In the next episode, TBB, he fails to recognize that Sherlock had been nearly strangled just a minute ago at the house of Soo Lin. Sherlock is wheezing and his voice is choked, but John merely asks if he suddenly has a cold. Not exactly in doctor mode, I guess. In TGG he doesn`t quite get the chance to do anything doctory, but in ASIB he takes Sherlock home to sleep it off after Irene drugs him, despite not at all knowing what she had given him and what kind of reactions it could cause. A responsible doctor would take him to hospital to run a blood test at the very least and keep him in observation overnight, especially considering Sherlock`s history with drugs. After all, Sherlock was delirious and babbling. But John leaves him in his bedroom after letting Lestrade film him for laughs - not quite what I expect from a great doctor. Further, in THOB, John fails to recognize that Sherlock was displaying clear symptoms of having been influenced by some sort of drug when he is sitting pale and trembling at the inn and admitting that he is badly frightened. And in TRF John doesn`t even try to revive Sherlock after the fall, having taken his pulse he just decides the man is dead. An army surgeon who specializes in severe injuries and trauma would immidiately kick into combat doctor mode and not stop until he is physically pulled away from his patient. Of course poor John was numb with shock, but still, where are his doctor reflexes?
In the first episode of season three, TEH, we see him working at his clinic doing medical examinations on one patient and handing a prescription to another, but its all rather vague. In TSOT however, he appearantly saves two men`s lives, first the guardsman then his friend Sholto, who are both severely injured. At least that`s what we are told. Sherlock himself tells us in his best man speech that he witnessed John saving the guardsman, and praises his doctor skills, but we do not see it actually happen, apart from John calling Sherlock his nurse and asking for his scarf. The scene stops there. Later, John declares himself to be Sholto`s doctor and walks into his room, but again the scene stops there, and we are later -indirectly- told that Sholto survived (”one nearly murder”). Again: TOLD but not SHOWN !
Then there is HLW. When John finds Sherlock unconscious in Magnussen`s office, he pats his cheek to wake him and starts calling for an ambulance. Whether he gives Sherlock any first aid while waiting is not shown. But when travelling in the ambulance, he sits passively by Sherlock`s gurney telling him “we are loosing you” but otherwise not doing anything to help in a medical way ! And later, when having his domestic with Mary in 221B he fails completely to realize what a terrible condition Sherlock was in ! I know he was distracted by the shock of learning the truth about his wife, but still ! Its as if his doctor instincts and skills shut down completely under stress. And that brings us to season four !
Taking all that happened there at face value, lets look at Mary`s rather ridiculous end ! Having treated lots of gun wounds before, John can only ineffectively put his hand over her wound and try to calm her, which even Mary calls him out on: “Come on doctor, you can do better !” So it seems quite fitting when Culverton Smith asks in TLD wether John is really, actually a medical doctor! And Sherlock poses the same question when John finally gets around to asking him if he`s all right. “Malnourished, double kidney failure and frankly been off my tits for weeks ! What kind of a doctor are you?” And in TFP he seems to drop the facade entirely, calling himself a soldier instead. Yet, Mycroft insists on calling him “Doctor Watson”....
Now I do realize that some of the plot doesn`t need specifically for John to be displaying his doctor skills, like in TBB when the boys were in a hurry and there was no time for John to do anything about Sherlock`s sore, nearly strangled throat anyway. So why bother talking doctorly about it? And its much more fun seeing Sherlock tripping around his bedroom in a daze than being laid up in hospital. And the drama plays out much better when John is reeling with shock from the death of his friend than doing CPR on him in a fruitless attempt to save him. Also we do not need to witness every medical procedure John had to perform on Sholto to ensure his survival. Still, a character has to be believable. John has failed to deliver convincingly as a skilled army doctor, even the writers must have realized this on some level, else they wouldn`t have the other characters point it out. And since season four has already questioned the motives and background of some of the characters - mrs. Hudson hinting that she is not what she seems and asking if Molly is the right person to be assessing people`s health to which John replies: “I don`t know, yeah I don`t know anything anymore!” and Mycroft not being quite the Ice Man after all, while Sherlock has to reconsider everything he thought he knew about himself and his past, it seems a good place to ask: Is John actually what he claims to be? Or is it all just smoke and mirrors, and wool over our eyes? Or maybe he is just - in the end - being human ?

I also feel the writers have deviated from the questions they posed in TAB, about what made Sherlock. John`s question to him “what made you this way?” to which he answers “nothing made me, I made me”. I was expecting to learn more about how Sherlock “made” himself in season 4, that would be the logical consistent narrative path, IMO. But instead they take a huge deviation from that path by telling us Sherlock was wrong, he didn`t make himself at all, he was made by others, mainly Euros and to some extent Mycroft. THEY made him into the man he is today, or in Mycroft`s words “”every step you`ve taken, every choice you`ve made, the man you are today is your memory of Euros!” They turn Sherlock into a victim, taking away from him every bit of control he believed that he had in “making” himself. Its a poor narrative choice and lessens the character and lets the viewers down as well.

interesting analysis ! do you know if there are any transcript of this Q&A? I find it hard to catch what he says as the sound is a bit blurry and he tends to mumble in his adorable way, and besides English not being my first language.
Love is......
Tumblr media
A very thoughtful Ben gave us his views on love this weekend. Not a rehearsed statement, no, it was spontaneous. It began by placing himself in his Sherlock character’s view of love and then it morphed into his own view on the subject. Ben thinks Sherlock sees love as a ‘secret thing’. He reminds us that JOHN [note here that Ben changes from the formal ‘Dr Watson’ to the intimate ‘John’ on this subject] questions him on this, saying John reminds him that love is a good thing to be ‘out’ in the world. Oh lord, the implications both of the characters and their real life are overflowing here. Note how Ben is totally focused, leaning forward, full steady gaze off into the back of the audience. He’s in reflective mode. Words he uses: ‘Unabashed’, ‘open’, ‘not something to be embarrassed about’ all mean the same thing in this context; unashamed. He adds ‘deeply private’ [with the caveat of ‘obviously’ added] as a qualifier hinting at his need for privacy but also to illustrate that there are levels to this issue and one is to be open and unashamed, the other is to keep a layer of love deeply private. Ben has always had difficulty disassociating himself from his characters, especially where Sherlock is concerned, and here it’s apparent that his own views/experience of love is driving the answer about Sherlock.
In context of the preceding comments, and then the proceeding, we get a glimpse of something. I’ve discussed the preceding in an earlier post. In the proceeding Ben is asked by the interviewer about Ben’s influence on his character of Sherlock. Ben laughs and says he doesn’t have much influence at all, as Mofftiss have a firm control there. He touches his ear and covers the side of his face closest to the interviewer with his hand; guarding. He’s aware he has more influence than he’s admitting, but given the laugh and the statement about the writers, he’s keeping this fact close to his chest. [Did the writers know? And if they did was it a problem?] He then jumps from saying ‘I’ and using first person to ‘WE’ and he keeps this up for the duration of the topic. He cannot separate himself and Martin when discussing the show. [He does this a lot] He says Sherlock is in Mofftiss’ blood then adds ‘obviously it’s in our blood too now.’ But he reminds himself that the show and the interpretation of the characters firmly belong to Steven and Mark, as he repeats 3 TIMES, ‘them’, ‘them’ ‘them’. That is a mantra he has adopted to discipline himself, indicating an inner conflict. His power over the character IS limited and he and the writers may not agree on that character. [Similar indication to Martin’s use of the word ‘if’ regarding the ending montage in TFP….Martin is more subtle and succinct]
Ben finally ends this segment of the talk with a joke that falls a bit flat. He suggests Molly and Mrs H could hook up. A few fans gave a whoop, but he knows it’s fell flat indicated by giving a bit of a waffle then some awkward body language; he sits up straight in the chair, shakes his head then bends down saying ‘he’ll get into trouble now’ but he won’t, we all know that, as does he. It’s an awkward exit to the subject. He adds the summation about the writers and the show being a mash up of a game plan, happenstance and retro-fit.
As a therapist I would have made notes on his words re Sherlock’s version of love, one which he plays out exquisitely, verses his verbal description of Sherlock’s inability to love. A huge dichotomy there. Plus his use of synonyms for ‘unashamed’ when saying what love should be. Sherlock isn’t ashamed, maybe John struggles in that regard but not Sherlock. He’s just silent on the subject verbally and emoting love non-verbally in everything he does. So I would ask why he needed to reiterate the point that love shouldn’t be kept secret? What love is secret?
Ben finds it difficult to separate himself from Sherlock, and also to separate Martin/John from the equation. And due to his speaking style, over talking, he reveals things to the listener. Taken as a whole, his public statements have caused huge confusion and division in the fandom, both about Sherlock and about himself. Ben is far more John Watson in real life than Sherlock Holmes. But…they have always said that haven’t they?

“And your very flesh shall be a great poem” by CaitlinFairchild
“He thinks about going to Sherlock, wrapping his arms around his slim body, holding him and comforting him in his terrible sorrow. But the distance between them feels like an ocean, like the expanse of the cold Atlantic between here and London, and he has no idea how to cross that vast chasm, or even if Sherlock wants him to.
They are here together, the two of them against the world a thousand miles from home-- but John suddenly sees that in a profound way, each locked inside their private grief, they’ve never been more alone.”
Since yesterday was America's birthday I was wondering if you've done a list of fics where Sherlock and John visit America? Thanks for all the great work you do!

Sherlock fanfics - my rec-list:
“The adventure of the High Grade, uncut ADMA; or, Sherlock Holmes rolls his face off”  by RedButtonHole
“Sherlock accidentally doses himself with pure MDMA and has a LOT of feels. John is with him to babysit, and has some feels of his own. Extreme fluff ensues, but no sex. This is rated M for explicit drug use, NOT porn.”
- this is a cute and hilarious story of how Sherlock takes drugs unknowingly and John has to sit him through the feels. Stays in-character even as Sherlock becomes a totally new, adorable person.
 “Guiding hand” by Seaholly
“When Sherlock once again risks his life by playing games with a serial killer, John finds himself taking stern measures to try to keep his mad detective safe.”
- John takes on a disciplinary role in Sherlock`s life, punishing him at home whenever he`s been doing reckless, risky things on cases. Sherlock agrees as long as there are plenty of cuddles after each punishment. Adorable, deep exploration of the complexity of feelings between two flatmates who are learning to trust each other in a completely new way. Multichaptered. WIP.
“Teaching Sherlock” by Sherlock1110
“Sherlock is 24, his older brother Mycroft has had enough. John Watson is known for training subs, looking after them until they're ready to leave and never getting emotionally attached. At least that was what he thought until he met Sherlock Holmes, the troublesome submissive who no one could tame.”
- AU, sweet and sexy dynamic between Dom and Sub, as they try not to get too attached to each other, as their training arrrangement is only for 3 months. Cases and discipline and lots of hot stuff. Multichaptered. WIP.
“A study in slavery” by Sweetinsane
“John has never owned a slave of his own, but after returning from Afghanistan is awarded one with his pension. A disobedient male slave with way too much troubling history, however, is not what he would have chosen himself.”
- AU in which slavery is worldwide accepted and organized. Sherlock and Mycroft become orphaned as kids and are sold into lifelong slavery. This fic portrays slavery in a very realistic and chilling way, and how it affects society and people alike. John is no hero in this story. Multichaptered. WIP.
 “Redbeard” by jcporter1
“After seeing a video on YouTube of Sherlock telling Anderson "How he did it." John has to re-evaluate his status.
Lovely story of Sherlock running away to live with a caravan of romani people, effectively hiding from the whole world and especially from his evil big brother. John is also looking for his friend, while trying to outsmart both Mary and Mycroft and having to handle a feisty toddler. John and Sherlock starts to communicate through code using Shakespearian prose in the local newspaper. Slow burn. Multichaptered. WIP.
