When I was 14 I decided I wanted labiaplasty. I googled it. I looked at the costs of chopping off bits of my genitals. I read reviews online. I looked at images. I extensively and repeatedly researched a surgery that I genuinely believed was necessary, because I didn’t have a porn body. Because I was ‘ugly down there’. Thankfully, as I grew up and found radical feminism, feminism that celebrated women and womanhood and critiqued pornography, critiqued the plastic surgery industry, critiqued femininity - I grew to love myself. Now, you couldn’t pay me to have the surgery I once so desperately wanted.

So when I see people on here telling women not to celebrate their vulva, their labia, their vaginas - when I see women on this site being told that their genitals and any mention of them is 'transphobic’ or 'cissexist’ or any of that bullshit, I rage.

Women, keep making your period art. Keep shouting about your vulva, keep creating art and media and keep having conversations about your body. Don’t let anyone talk you out of doing so. What you’re doing is so, so important.
