Six Things You Didn’t Know You Didn’t Know About the Plumbob
Tumblr media
Sul sul!
Since starting Plumbob Post, the number one question I have been asked by non-simmers is “What on Earth is a plumbob?” The answer is simple. The plumbob is the diamond that floats above the selectable sim and indicates their mood (green=good, red=bad). It is easily the most recognizable symbol in the franchise, so much so that it has made its way into the logo starting with The Sims 2.
That question, however, prompted me to do some research, and I found that there are quite a few interesting things about the ever-present plumbob. I took the liberty of compiling a list of the most interesting facts I researched, so without further ado, here’s six things you didn’t know you didn’t know about the plumbob:

CAS tutorial below to go from this
Tumblr media
To this in under 10 minutes.
To Answer the second question I got:
Do your sims look like that in play mode?
Short answer: Yes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You are probably experiencing lighting issues. To fix some of the issues you notice you can try the CAS lighting mod and Setting your sim details to very high.
The lighting mod should give you a better idea of what your sim will look like in game, it is meant to improve the textures to match that, as the CAS lighting was before a little wonky and you will notice slight things.
Also keep in mind your sim has slightly sharper detail in CAS. The cas will always be better lighted than the original game.
if you use a pose mod in CAS, or you haven't selected a trait, your sims for the most part aren't moving much if even at all. So take into account how their facial expressions will contort in game. EA made them look a bit cartoony and completely stretches them for many extreme emotions the Sims are feeling.
This mod should alleviate most of that.
With the pose player it was highly recommended that you use the EA invisible lights in your scenes. That better lighting will bring back the detail you had in CAS.
If you have tried all of these steps and you still aren't liking your results, perhaps you just need to find your aesthetic. Pick a style you want your sims to be, commit to it, and carefully curate your CAS cc folders to reflect that.
Before I found my own process I struggled a lot with creating sims. It took me several hours, I would get frustrated, have no idea what I wanted to do, and when I did know, I didn't know how to achieve it through the sliders, and I wasn't comfortable enough yet with the custom sliders I was using so my sims were a mess, and then after 3-4 hours if I came to something decent enough, I felt like they just drank an uglify potion in game.
I wasn't happy with the results, because I wasn't happy with the options I had selected for myself. I didn't really consider what CAS cc I was putting in the game or what vibe I was going for.
I absolutely, hands down, go full alpha realistic.
If you want to learn how I achieve this then I can give a little tutorial.
You need a good skin as a base. If you hate the skin, you're not going to know how to or even want to sculpt out their features.
If you are more maxis match then try to find skins that look clean and smooth, and use a face overlay to dampen down the EA features.
That's the best I got for maxis match people as I don't really know how to design my sims in that style, but from the really pretty sims I've seen from other simmers in that style, the skins they use are usually very clear and smooth.
Tumblr media
If you are going more alpha like I do, then you'll want those high quality skins that are made from people irl.
However, if you want to keep it simple like me, then just use chinsami default replacement skin, refer to this post. This gives all ages that alpha realistic skin texture. For more depth try the normal maps.
This for me is so I don't clutter my mods folder with a bunch of skins that I struggled to find in game. I really wanted an alpha skin that wasn't for a specific gender or age. Having all those options in CAS can be annoying to find and scroll through. While I didn't personally experience a performance loss with those skins, it was still a pain to find what I was looking for. And removing those skins does increase performance even though I didn't lag with it, the game is and felt lighter.
The alpha skins are high quality, and I'd rather have an alpha high quality DR all across the board.
What I look for in my skins are real life details, pores, slight skin pulling, slight mismatched color, blushed cheeks or lips.
Just because the alpha skin is made from a real life person doesn't mean your sim will only ever look like that. I am only saying for people who don't use alpha skins but want to try it and may be wondering. Some skins can be more rigid with the definition in certain features of the face, but you can still tweak it and create someone new.
But that's why the Alpha DR is so genius. The features for the eyes nose and mouth are so general and ambiguous simmers have a much easier time sculpting out the face.
Now as far as how to actually sculpt out your sims faces and give them a unique face. I've gotten so good at it, it's a pretty quick process for me. Because again, the skin really does a lot of the work.
I recommend installing these face presets. This and this.
Body girth sliders.
Smooth face normals slider.
Jonha body sliders.
Eyelashes DR. It's the last comment, also get the eyelash removal mesh.
Tumblr media
Right click the 3 dots in CAS (you should have master controller and integration installed).
Tumblr media
Change max sliders to 500. (I have 400 custom sliders, setting to 500 allows the game to let me use all of the sliders in the ui, for those who wondered why a lot of their sliders weren't working). If a slider still doesn't work after this then the slider is outdated or broken.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Change both slider values at the bottom from 1 to 5. (The slider values need to be stronger so you can achieve more realistic looks).
This should serve you as a good starting base. (I will be making a video tutorial showing you an example of this process on several sims).
Decide the sims skin color.
2. Embellish their original body shape or change it completely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Change their head shape (you can randomly select from the head presets I linked, or do something yourself, I go with the vibe of the sim sometimes).
You do need to change their head shape first because if you do the other steps then change the head shape it resets the values.
Tumblr media
4. Decrease their body girth it honestly depends, just feel it out.
Tumblr media
5. Decrease their head size again depends.
Tumblr media
6. Increase smooth face normals (you typically notice bumps in the face issues at around 200 value, but sometimes if the sim has a flat face you can go higher).
I just have to note I love this slider so much and can be used on Alpha and maxis match skins, it just smooths the face over, but with alpha skins it still retains the sharper details.
You can change their height at this point, but I usually just wait.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Select an eye preset or tweak the eye shapes yourself, but I decrease the eye size, not too small but noticeably smaller than EA eye shapes.
Tumblr media
8. Increase eye stretch. I just feel it out. But it brings back the realism and depth of a realistic eye size on a human face.
Tumblr media
9. Change the eye color.
For realistic roleplays I don't do fantasy colors or really saturated blues and greens.
Most people with these eye colors have a darker or lighter shade of this color, but more muted. If I do give a sim a high saturated blue or green color I consider it a rare genetic trait.
For light brown and hazel I do saturate that more than blues and greens so it can show a lot better on the sims and in game lighting.
For dark browns I just go for black as irl the melanin is so intense in dark brown eyes you can't really see the color unless in the light.
Tumblr media
10. select nose preset, tweak it yourself, or stick with the sims original nose. This process doesn't really matter until after you've applied a nose mask. The way the sliders work on a sims nose after a nose mask is slightly different so you're not going to get the same result you'd expect by spending time tweaking the nose now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
11. Select lip preset, tweak it yourself, or stick to the original. I hate how short the width of sims lips are as I feel EA made really big eyes with really little lips (they wanted to be Disney so bad). So I usually increase the width of their lips, if it's a sim that doesn't have Afrocentric features I will still increase it but to a reasonable amount.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12. Now select your eyelashes. Select your nose mask. I use SLS masks, and I am going to experiment with making my own nose and face masks, I have a few ideas but I think this would greatly expand the creation process. (I also took off all the makeup, I don't have nose masks installed so this is just the lashes).
13. Fix the shape of the lashes in the eye sliders. It won't always be an exact match, especially depending on the eye shape. But you can always fix it in PS (eyedropper tool to get the exact color, and paint the missing eyelash section). For in game as long as it's as close to the water line as you can get it, you won't really notice it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
14. From here you zoom out from the sim and try to get a good feel of who they can be. It's mostly random but if I want to make the sim plus sized if I haven't already I will, and if I want them to be preppy, gothic, a gamer, etc, I'll align their hair and makeup to that style.
15. For men I make their legs longer, the shoulders wider, their hips slightly smaller, their hands slightly smaller or larger (depends on the build), and their feet bigger. Sometimes I also widen their neck, but not by much as the head size can give varying offset reactions. I try to model these tweaks to how Japanese/Korean male bodies were drawn in a lot of the older manga and comics. It gives me a nostalgic feeling from like the early 2000's late 90's, the shape is iconic and still being reflected today.
16. For women I make their hips wider, decrease the waist, thicken the thighs, slightly increase shoulder width, smaller hands and feet, butt mass and rotate gets tweaked a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This really just depends on the sim as I'll do even the opposite like if I want a sim to have a more realistic shape, my settings for women is like an average BBL esque kind of shape or something that accentuates a woman's body.
But I also love giving women chunky or chubby bellies, arms, and cheeks. Chunky women are adorable and sexy to me, and I love seeing those townies walking around and interacting with them. Same for men, they won't all be tall and muscular.
I realized a while ago everyone doesn't need to look like a supermodel and I've made some breathtaking and beautiful sims that reflect the average person irl.
So if you want like a conventionally attractive celebrity sim or pretty copy and paste sim I'd follow steps 15 and 16. If you are just doing an average sim just do whatever feels right for that particular sim.
Tumblr media
Half the time I'm not really changing much about their bodies, for example Pandora my androgynous vampire sim has a very athletic and petite shape she's perfectly beautiful for her specifically. All I did was steps 1-14, then brought her waist in very slightly, her hips out very slightly, and increase her arm mass by a little to accentuate how toned she already was.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As well as my Haitian-esque Sienna sim who has a typical West African body type. I increase her weight, brought out her hips, cinched in her waist, increase her upper arm size, smaller hands, increase leg width, I pushed her posture forward instead of back (I still might change it), and increase her breasts and lifted them up a tiny bit. I also gave her a more realistic butt shape as again she has that west African coca cola bottle shape.
So you're going to see in the video tutorial what I mean by this and you'll understand that this process really isn't that long, and by following steps 1-14 after that customizing the sims becomes more enjoyable and gives you more creative control. You won't be focused on "fixing" the sims, you'll be focused on giving them their own unique charm. It cuts that fixing process down to 2-5 minutes in my experience. I typically take 20-40 minutes making a sim with lots of detail because of this process. Most of my time is spent creating their outfits as I feel it should be and was the original intent of the EA cas process.

Juliet’s Bistro & Rooftop Bar - For Boroughsburg [DOWNLOAD]
Surprise! Two downloads in one night! That’s what happens when your 7-month-old baby goes to bed early for once! This is by far my favourite Boroughsburg build to date. The views from the rooftop bar are truly amazing - day & night!
Inspired by real-life Juliette Restaurant in Williamsburg, New York
Built on 8 Empire Street 25 x 35 lot in Boroughsburg.
DOWNLOAD HERE
I have all expansion packs except ITF. No stuff packs. All CC used included in download except what is linked below.
Custom Content Not Included:
• Mel’s Public Transit Bike Set by @mspoodle1
• Ani’s Business as Unusual Bistro mod (needed for the ATS3 chef station in the kitchen, but included both modded and EA version in the download - will need EA’s Bistro set to work )
@aroundthesims Cargeaux Cabinets and Counters used for kitchen, but feel free to replace. All CC used is actually replaceable but used to match RL restaurant as much as possible.
Gameplay Notes
• Bistro Rug included in the download and placed in front of the entrance door. Suggest you use Icarus_AllSort’s Eat Outside Restaurant mod to have your sims use the Bistro rabbit hole rug to order their food but eat at the tables. Or you can delete the Bistro rug altogether and have sims use the EA Bistro set to order food. Or you can place a food register at the counter - the expresso machine used has a food register version here.
 • My laptop is crappy therefore every time I went into buydebug and placed the skip level marker then return to the map to save the lot I was faced with the infinite loading screen of death. After my 10th try (not even kidding) force-quitting the game, then 15mins start-up only to be faced by the same fate, again and again, I’ve given up! So if the empty weird split level bothers you, you’ll have to place the skip level marker yourself. If you have no idea how to do that or what I’m talking about feel free to message me.
Credits to all CC creators and also to @potato-ballad-sims for his beautiful world.
