DESN2002 Assessment 3 Online Blog

When developing the idea for the Bullet Journal I thought how could it relate to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and creating a product that is specifically marketed and made to be accessible to people despite their economic situation (E.G having to study or work full time leaving themselves with little time to themselves as they do not have the privilege to either hire someone to do it for them or take the time off needed to create it themselves.) giving the general public equal access to the same lifestyles, opportunities and organization.

I personally have always loved the idea of bullet journaling but its never been an obtainable idea as I have never had the time to create one or the creativity it takes to make ad maintain one. Through always dreaming on Pinterest or seeing ones made on TikTok selling for quadruple the price of something I could logically afford. I wanted to design something that could become a useful everyday product for someone and make something upper class and once unobtainable a product that is now within reach.

By creating a product that is creates a more organized and sustainable future for others, the impact it has is essential to the growth of the customer. The impact is greater in the customers life; The ability to creatively express yourself without having to learn skills that you once didn't have due to many reasons such as low economic status, lack of education or skill and/ or just lack of time creates a better mental health space, healthier coping mechanisms and also opens up the ability to learn a skill they once didn't have.

My personal responsibility on this project was the entire concept from start to finish. As I personally didn’t work in a group project I designed, thought or and innovated the project while also linking it back to the 3rd goal of good health and well being of the sustainable goals of the United Nations.

While something as simple as journaling may seem as a simple task, for those struggling with mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety; the simple task of doing something easy for themselves is not something they are able to do everyday. Often everyday tasks such as brushing teeth and/or hair, getting dressed, making your own bed become too much for the individual and they struggle to complete. By handing them a journal that half the work is already done for them. We soften the task making it more obtainable and a more sustainable task for them; easing their discomfort as they complete the task.

I found this to be bit of a passion project for me and contributed 100% of the idea, creation and writing to the assignment to get it done. While Good health and well being may be swept under the rug and seemingly less important of the goals. It is one that can be made easily accessible if you are creative with the forms it takes. Good health is not just physical health. It is your mental and spiritual health as well. Your well being is not just your physical wellbeing and safety; it is about being safe and well with yourself.

I personally struggled with designing the pages and drawing them up as a bullet journal has a hand made and drawn feel and it would not feel authentic to the original source matter to do it any other way. However, I do not have a creative bone in my hand to be able to create, design or even recreate some of the art that is seen on social media. I did create an image where you get the general idea of what is wanted from the design; however, if I were to actually create this product I would hire someone who actually has talent to make and design those pages. As it is not for me.

While this does not solve all the problems under the goal of Good health and wellbeing, it infact doesn't even solve 1/100th of a problem under it. It does show that there are simple and effective ways to open up the solution the general public and make it sustainable. obtainable and simple for the public to enjoy.

The finale

After many weeks of work, the film is nearly entirely finished. Is it my best work? Probably not. Is it finished? Not yet. Is it something that I thought about, put effort into, beloved in the message it sent and am happy with what I could do? For the most part yes.

I found the hardest part was the decision making. Deciding the storyline, where to be filmed, what to say or wear or what props. The decisions were never ending and sometimes debilitating. I’ve never been a decision maker and this hasn’t helped make it easier. Some of the decisions were made for me. Such as filming one thing watching it back and thinking it was cringe. The decision to refilm was easy. Or writing the first voiceover and realising how preachy it was. Deciding to write a new script was easy.

Deciding to go with a wrestling theme and what I have personally experienced seemed like an easy choice but became hard when I realised the concept of a women experience in wrestling was an extremely niche genre and the set up for it was extremely important in the first 30 seconds. Obviously wrestling is fake and it’s all planned but getting that across to an audience who doesn’t know anything about wrestling could’ve been one of the hardest things about the project. Plus making sure the message I was sending was clear and understood by the audience while still being entertaining and not in your face also posed difficulties. But hey!

I enjoyed the process of filming and adding the voiceover and getting to watch a product I made.

Final Production

Now that the project is finally starting to come together and I can actually see what it is. I don’t think it’s horrible 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wanted something that showed that women are an equal power to men in sports while also highlighting the sexist remarks women have to hear about themselves and I think it works.

The hardest part of the editing process was writing the script for the voiceover and having a clear enough voice that when I listened back to it I knew what I was saying and didn’t CRINGE. Applying the voice over and making sure every word that was said hit at the exact moment I wanted it to also was a task that took TOO much concentration. Ngl it took a couple days too long but that’s alright

My final product is a piece that conveys the hardships of women in male dominated sports and uses verbatim dialogue to pound its message into peoples heads. WOO

Post production

While filming the voice over for the original film I realised how AWKWARD it looked and sounded when watching it back. I just look like someone lost in thought and when I’m not doing obvious wrestling.

It didn’t make sense.

So I quickly went back to the start. Ooft

But! It turned out okay. On Saturday I was lucky enough to borrow some time before an already established wrestling show and film a match with someone while wrestlers, friends and family looked on playing the role of am audience.

I filmed a simple match with a hard cam, and 2 roaming camera and directed them on exactly how I wanted it to look.

Now I have to splice those videos together, re-record the voice over to fit and hopefully it makes sense this time 🤷🏻‍♀️. We hope.

Filming

Filming is not an easy task when I have to coordinate a ring wrestling in it without someone to wrestle.

It’s okay though.

I’ll just do the moves by myself 🤪. But there’s more to wrestling then the actual moves. Working out, warming up, stretching, rolls the list goes on. Filming the process of getting ready to wrestle honestly makes more sense then to film the wrestling itself. While getting ready and hearing every criticism I’ve heard, every random comment that someone said, every rumour spread around is way more powerful and meaningful then any move you could do to show impact.

So that’s what I filmed. The awkward silence of stretching and getting ready for a match. Everything. Now to do an awkies voiceover 🤪

Storyboards, story, dialogue.

Story

I have decided to depict the world of a female wrestler whilst she’s a training and the encounters she has with the men around her. Being the minority of a male dominated sport and hearing everything that’s being said about her whilst trying to succeed. It is just to depict one night of training in a group setting whilst being isolated from the rest.

Storyboards

I have yet to start the storyboard however, I want to use specific camera angles to depict the feeling of the character in the moment. Through pov shots, high angles and low angles. I want to be able to physically see what the character is feeling in that moment

Dialogue

The main character won’t speak. Only those around her will speak. When she is spoken too by trainers and peers she is also either spoken down too or almost not included in the conversation E.g. talking about a male experience she is unable to relate to/ comment on.

I also specifically want to include the line “you are going to be treated differently by everyone in the wrestling community cause you’re a girl and will be babied. I’m gunna treat you worse to make up for it.” As it was something personally said to me and a group of girls I train with. And I’m Petty like that.

Creative collab blog No.1

The Genre

Deciding on what genre of film to delve into is the biggest challenge i face when i think about creating a film. A horror film creates tension and banks on the acting skill of the performers and the use of non-diegetic sound to create the tension they are famous for. Or I could utilize the skills of the performers at hand and create an action film using wrestling.

The Story

If I were to go with the wrestling storyline, I think addressing the sexist element in the film would be the most accurate way to represent the sport. As a women in the sport I can accurately represent the experience of women in the sport while also on a smaller scale present the same experience of women in most male dominated industries. Showcasing the blatant sexism and discrimination with no real happy ending symbolizing the experience of women in the sport and how there is no true answer to the issues they face.
