I’ve always wanted to rewrite this story, it was my first CS MC, I was just coming out of the Olicity fandom and wanted to write my two OTPs together. I can’t thank @captainswanbigbang enough for giving me this opportunity. You ladies rock! Also, to @scientificapricot – I can’t thank you enough for your AMAZING BETAing skills and your flailing. This story wouldn’t be finished without you. <3

(love will see us through these) Dark Days [CSRT; 7/7]

Summary: A century ago, the United Realms of Pomem had been a land of peace, prosperity, and magic. Until war tore the land apart, leaving behind cruel leaders and even crueler laws regarding the use of magic. And each year, the youth of each realm are subjected to a fight to the death, both for entertainment and to weed out anyone capable of wielding magic. In the 99th Magic Games, past victors Emma Nolan and Killian Jones find themselves serving as mentors, while Alice Gothel and Robyn West end up representing their realm. A/N: OMG IT’S THE LAST CHAPTER!! Thank you so much to everyone who has commented on it; I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed it! I don’t exactly have a timeline for the next story yet, but I’ll probably start working on it when I’m done with my CSSNS commitments. And thank you again to @captainswanbigbang for giving a great venue to revisit this, and to @optomisticgirl for being an amazing beta. Title is from “Safe and Sound” by Taylor Swift and the Civil Wars. Enjoy!
CHAPTER 7—Come morning light, you and I’ll be safe and sound
The trip home was…weird. That was the only way Robyn could describe it. It was the same train, and the same views of Pomem flying by outside, but in reverse—which felt poetically appropriate (or something like that; she wasn’t great at writing).
Because this trip was a complete 180 from the previous: last time, she knew there was a very decent chance she was being carried away to her death; to have escaped that—and lived through everything—definitely carried a sense of relief with it, but she also knew she wasn’t the same person she was a few weeks ago.
Granted, it was a much better 180 than the one most of the other tributes had taken: leaving home alive and well and heading back in a coffin.
(Could there actually be that many 180s from the same point? She wasn’t great at geometry either.)
(God, she was probably going to have to go back to school, wasn’t she? Ugh, being 16 sucked.)
She knew that a whole different life was waiting for her in Sherwood, but how she was supposed to build it on the foundation of her past was what she hadn’t figured out yet. There was probably a house waiting for her and her mom in Victor’s Village—whichever one they wanted, most likely, given that Eloise and Alice were the only other living Victors. She wouldn’t have to go to work in the textile factories or cotton fields like everyone else was expected to, and she didn’t even have to follow her mom’s footsteps into midwifery if she didn’t want to. She’d probably have to become a mentor, once she finished high school, but that was far from a full-time job.
Hell, she was even nervous about seeing her mom again. As much as she’d felt a pang of jealousy at the fact that Alice had her mother—well, both parents—with her, as stilted as her relationship was with Eloise, and as much as Robyn desperately wanted to fall into her own mom’s hug and never leave, she wasn’t sure it would hold the same comfort it used to.
She was going to be vaguely poetic again: she was standing on a precipice, but couldn’t see past the edge.
That was semi-literal; the train was going through mountains, so there was stone on one side and a sheer cliff over forest on the other. The sun was making its slow ascent and Alice was snoring in the bed, feet away.

The Early Leaf’s a Flower: 7/11
Tumblr media
In this chapter, Emma sets off on a search for home, but is she only running? Meanwhile, Killian learns that a voyage may be in order to stop Pan’s evil schemes. I promise, this is the last chapter that Emma and Killian will be separated! I think (hopefully) your wait will have been well worth it ;) At any rate, this chapter has some really important revelations. Oh, and don’t try to make this story fit canon. Just don’t. Storybrooke really is just a normal town, and the only Once characters in it are the ones I have named. I haven’t forgotten about Snow and Charming, I promise. You just have to trust me! (I’ve said that a lot, haven’t I?)
Much thanks as always to the mods of the csrt event at @captainswanbigbang. Also thanks to @optomisticgirl and @shippingtheswann for their beta skills.
Summary: She saw eyes that were the blue of the forget me not peering at her through the cracked door of the wardrobe. He saw hair as gold as the buttercups. Why does the wardrobe keep bringing them back to one another, if fate keeps tearing them apart? Or maybe fate has her reasons …
Rating: M for eventual sexy times, violence, canonical character death, and attempted rape
Trigger warnings: vague references to child abuse (physical and sexual), violence, and positive Millian
Words: About 3k in this chapter

Emma: Age 21
Emma wedges the last cardboard box into the backseat of her Bug, and Graham grunts as he slams the trunk shut. She’s honestly surprised he managed it. For someone with no roots, she sure was able to pack this car tight. Not that it takes much in a VW Bug, but still.
“Are you sure about this?” Ruby asks as Emma shuts the door.
“Yeah,” Graham says coming around the front of the car, “Tallahassee is an awfully long way from Maine.”
Emma shrugs. “There’s farther.”
Ruby rolls her eyes. “But you have a life here. Plus, if you stay, you get to be one of my bridesmaids.”
Ruby nudges Emma’s elbow, making her smile despite herself. “And I so want to wear those lovely dresses Bertie at Modern Fashions designed for you. What color was that again?”
“Salmon,” Ruby laughs, “but if you stay, I could convince her to do them in magenta instead.”
Emma chuckles too. “Now, that changes everything!”
“Now, Emma,” Graham cuts in, “it’s a long drive from here down to Florida. Pull over if you get tired, and make sure you check the oil regularly, and -”
“Would both of you stop?” Granny admonishes, shooing Ruby and Graham away so she can pull Emma in for a hug. “Don’t listen to them, sweetheart. You’re young, and you need to spread your wings.”

Chapter 6: Don’t Stop Me Now Part 2
 Kilian - December 2019
Elsa and Emma were taking too long. Liam and Killian had been waiting for what seemed like hours in the waiting room of the hospital. Killian was so lost in his own thoughts that he didn’t even realize he was wiggling his leg up and down until Liam laid his hand on his knee.
“Calm down, Killian. They will come out at any moment.”
He tried, he really did, but as time passed without news of Emma, he was getting more and more nervous. The fury that seemed to have dissipated before was now coming back with more force. He was angry not only with the asshole who had hurt Emma, but also with himself. I shouldn’t have let go of her hand . That thought kept repeating itself over and over in his head, making him feel more and more guilty about what had happened. And if that weren’t enough, another even more frustrating thought threatened to drain the little composure he still had. It should be me who was accompanying her inside.
But Elsa was Emma’s emergency contact and also her roommate, so everyone expected Elsa to be the one beside her at the moment. After all, he was just a friend, he repeated to himself bitterly.
Bloody hell… He stood up, unable to remain still any longer, and began pacing up and down. He felt like a caged animal, unable to do anything to help Emma while a wave of helplessness crawled over him.

What a Wicked Game {13/15}
Tumblr media
Killian met her in a pub on a rainy night in March. Going inside was only supposed to be a way for him to avoid the rain and fight off the demons in his head. It was a place for him to pass through, not stay. But then he was charmed by a blonde woman with a quick wit who had absolutely no interest in him or who he was.
That was a first. It was also the beginning of Emma Nolan helping to bring him back to life. It was the beginning of everything.
Five years later, with their worlds crumbling around them, Killian can’t help but wonder if this is the end of the peace they have known now that his family knows about his relationship. It wouldn’t be a problem if his father wasn’t the King of England.

November 10th, 2018
Elsa gives birth to a girl.
It happens quickly, a quarter past five on the morning on November tenth, and the text wakes Killian from his slumber to find a picture of Elsa holding a small, red-faced child named Elizabeth.
Princess Elizabeth Amelia Zara Jones.
Lizzie.
“She’s beautiful,” Emma whispers over Alex’s head as his small limbs kick into Killian’s stomach like they’ve been doing since he was dropped off last night by frenzied parents.
“She looks demonic right now.”
“Stop,” Emma hisses with a roll of her eyes. “All babies are the most gorgeous creatures on the planet. You’re not supposed to point out that they can look demonic and be unattractive.”
“If it’s not my child and I’m not saying it to the parents, I can say whatever the hell I want.”
“And if it is your child?”
Killian reaches his hand over to tug on Emma’s waist, pulling her closer to him so that her freezing feet tuck between his calves and they won’t wake Alex with their whispering. “Now, Swan, we’ve talked about this. We’re just practicing with our naked sleepovers. No babies are going to be involved.”
“I hate you.”
“You love me.”
“Not right now,” Emma huffs, but he can see her smile. “Can you believe Elsa and Liam have another baby?”
“Aye. Known it would be happening for awhile now. Elsa’s ever burgeoning stomach gave me a few clues.”

CS ff: “Walking the Tightrope” (Chapter 10/10) (au)
Summary: Killian’s daily routines are a matter of habit. When he wakes up late one morning, his routines all change for the better. Emma doesn’t care about routines, but she does care about Killian, no matter how reluctant she is to admit it to herself.

A/N: So, this is the last main chapter. There is an epilogue which I will post on Sunday, and then this grand adventure will be wrapped up! Thanks for being with me on this ride and for any comments, reblogs, and likes. I’m thankful beyond words. <3

Chapter 10: Snowshine
Walsh still looks exactly the same as the last time she was here. Emma tries her best to keep her stomach calm when all she wants to do is throw up on his face, projecting an outward cool that she doesn’t feel as he enters the room and looks up at her.
“What the - Emma? What the hell are you doing in my apartment?”
“Taking back what’s rightfully mine,” Emma says, gesturing to the box of pictures sitting on the bed beside her.
“Oh no, sweetheart. I would hardly call all of those yours.”
“Don’t call me sweetheart, asshole.”
Through all of this, James has been watching a progress bar load on the computer screen. With a noise of victory, he looks back to her.
“There you go, Emma. All done.”

our little life (rounded with a sleep) chapter eight [8/12] AO3
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful detective. She had blonde hair, green eyes, no family, and she was good at finding people; in fact, she proclaimed this on her office door. “Swan and Humbert,” it said. “Private investigations, missing persons, and bail bonds.”
Only lately, she’s been thinking that maybe it should say “Emma Swan: Loner, Loser, Complicated wreck.”
Her partner’s been killed on a case after she made a deal with her landlord to find what had been taken from him. But when she tracks a possible perp to a bar on the outskirts of town, Emma will find out exactly how deep the rabbit hole goes.
as always, to my mythical beauties, @thisonesatellite, @profdanglaisstuff, @katie-dub:  let’s have cold-brewed tea on the terrace.  maybe hester will even share her blanket.
to @captainswanbigbang: thank you so much for all of your work making this event a reality.

chapter summary: Following their confrontation with the Mad Hatter, Emma needs a break.  She isn’t worried, though.
Emma doesn’t worry, just–she’s already lost Graham. She isn’t going to let anyone else die on this case, whether that was Captain Hook or the Big Bad Wolf. Which–maybe Ruby could bring snacks.
Liam was wary, though he let his brother pull him into a half-embrace, one arm draped across his shoulder. Henry was thrilled.
“I knew it,” he said. “I knew you were Captain Hook, didn’t I, Emma?”
“Yeah, kid,” Emma said. “You really did.” She could feel Hook’s eyes on her as she ruffled Henry’s hair; just for an instant, his expression changed.
The look you get when you’ve been left alone.
“I’m hungry,” Henry said.
“I’ll call Ruby,” Emma said, smiling at him, before her gaze wandered back behind the bar. Hook’s face was, one again, impassive, and the grin he flashed was the one she knew he reserved for the co-eds.
Emma had just hung up the phone after giving orders to a protesting Ruby–”Just, like, a fuckton of grilled cheese and onion rings and whatever else, Red, bring it over to The Rabbit Hole as soon as humanly possible”–when she heard Henry speaking to Hook. Mary Margaret had brought him over to the bar, watching him with curiosity.
“I don’t think you’re a villain,” Henry said, his voice earnest and serious.
Hook looked quickly at Emma, then at Liam, who was sitting next to Henry, and then at Henry himself before he seemed able to find words. “Is that so, lad?”
Liam wasn’t quite facing his brother, but Emma could see that he was leaning, just slightly, toward Henry.
“Yeah,” Henry said. “I mean, I know you did a lot of bad stuff.”
“I did,” Hook said quietly. He looked at Emma over Henry’s head.
“I haven’t lived a good life, and I’ve done worse things than you can ever imagine.”
“You lost your True Love,” Henry said. “It made you go dark. But I don’t think that’s who you are anymore. I think you’ve changed.”
Liam had shifted, facing Henry. His expression was speculative.
“I was given a gift: To wake up, for twenty-eight years, and not dread the day before it began. To live the same day, over and over, and to welcome it, because I felt like someone alive.”
“But my constant pursuit of revenge–for the death of the crocodile–left my life empty. That’s the thing about revenge, you see: it’s an end, not a beginning.”
Emma walked up behind Henry, putting her hand on his shoulder and squeezing it. Then, she put her hand on the bar, next to Hook’s, their fingers so close as to nearly be touching. He wasn’t looking at her; he was looking at their hands on the wooden surface, and she had to angle her head so that their eyes met. She heard but did not register Mary Margaret’s intake of breath.
Hook cleared his throat and said, “Well. I need a drink. Anyone else?”

December 2020
Emma’s in a white dress made of ornate lace and the most intricate beading work she’s ever seen. The material hugs her body, accentuating the curve of her waist and falling to her wrists where they stop so that the rings on her hands are visible. There are three now, two on the left hand and one on the right. Her hair is falling down her back in long, perfectly curled waves, and half of it is pinned back with a diamond barrette that almost perfectly matches the tiara gracing the top of her head. A veil is attached to it, and it wraps around her body and all the way down to the ground, the lace surrounding the edges of it.
She’s wearing a tiara.
Like, a tiara worth hundreds of thousands of dollars that she wore on top of her head for hours.
It was a year and a half ago and she’s worn plenty of nice jewelry since, but there’s something about looking at the pictures hanging in their hallway that still makes Emma stop in her tracks to stare at them.
It’s the nice clothes at first, her wedding dress and Killian’s black Naval uniform that he looked so handsome in, but then it’s the smiles on their faces, the true happiness written into their lips. Their foreheads are pressed together in this one, and while their lips aren’t touching, they nearly are. Killian’s eyes are crinkled, the lines prominent, and Emma remembers him telling her some awful dirty joke that had the photographer blushing and Emma laughing until tears were flowing from her eyes.
(They’d had to touch up her makeup, and it took forever because she couldn’t seem to stop laughing at her husband.)

Content Warnings: Very start of the chapter has mentions of child abuse. Also, a special disclaimer that my knowledge on children’s services and foster custody are very limited. I cobbled together the best I could from Google searches and reading up. Chapter 7: Signs from the Universe
November 16: Friday
Their second date goes even better than the first, with Killian showing off not only the beautiful apartment he scored when he moved (with every room decorated in such a fashion that Emma is almost jealous of the simple and elegant taste he has), but also his cooking skills which are pretty damn impressive if Emma is being honest.
It probably would’ve gone even better if they hadn’t been disturbed in the middle of their movie. They’d settled into a comfortable spot on his couch, with her cuddled into his side and his hand teasing the skin behind her knee, slowly igniting a fire within her that wanted to burst free. But no, she had to go help with a drunk and disorderly call because the miner they call Grumpy will only listen to her after a certain amount of drinks for some reason. It’s why David has nicknamed her a magical savior when they have to go down this path.
And now it’s been six days since his breath had stuttered out when her fingers teased the hair on the nape of his neck. Six days since he’d turned to face her in the low light of the room and kissed her in a way that made her feel utterly cherished and also so aroused she could hardly stand it. She’d just been about to act on all of it when her phone rang and she audibly groaned at the absurdity of the timing.
Needless to say, it’s been a long six days.

A/N: We survived the games! and there’s only one chapter left after this—ahh! Thanks as always to @captainswanbigbang for hosting this event and the best beta ever @optomisticgirl. Chapter title comes from “Kingdom Come” by The Civil Wars.
Important note: So, this is the chapter where things happen (in the past) with Killian and Eloise. While it’s completely consensual, it’s still not the greatest of situations (they’re both victims, in this scenario). So if you don’t want to read that, then I advise you to skip over the flashback at the end.
part 6: Don’t you fret my dear; it’ll all be over soon / I’ll be waiting here for you
Alice felt like she was going to be sick. But at the same time, she didn’t feel much—like all her senses were muted somehow; like she was covered in a see-through blanket. Absentmindedly, she scratched, yet again, at the new bracelet on her arm.
“Stop it,” her mother scolded, swatting her hand away. “You’ll get used to it,” she added, a bit softer.
Alice glanced over at her mum, who was now toying with her own cuff. From the outside, it was beautiful: made of beads woven together in shades of orange that matched Eloise’s hair and, at least at the moment, matched the floral pattern that covered her flowy gown. When Alice was little, she would stare at it in awe, thinking it was merely a beautiful accessory. Now, she knew better.
And god, she understood her mother that much more. Alice’s was equally gorgeous—a sea of blues that mimicked the color of her (and her papa’s) eyes, and nearly blended into the stunning turquoise ball gown she was wearing. She now knew that those beads were made of silicon, and the wires and metal holding it together were all part of the circuitry used to block the release of magic. But it felt like her body was rejecting it, and rightly so; it was literally suppressing a part of her that had been there her whole life. So while her mother’s attention was diverted, she snuck another scratch in.
She nearly jumped when a hand closed over hers. “Easy there,” Robyn whispered, giving her a soft smile. “I’ve got ya.” She squeezed her hand over Alice’s, and even though it didn’t do much to relieve the itch that felt like it was burrowing into her soul, it was soothing nonetheless.
“Thanks,” she said, returning the tiny grin. Even though the games had ended a few days ago, it felt like they’d barely spent any time together. They’d curled together on the hovercraft, but the trip from the Arena back to Olympus was depressingly short, and they’d been split apart almost immediately and taken to recover separately.
She’d no sooner been hurried into a hospital room than a crude cuff had been slapped on her wrist, immediately stifling her magic. Cruelly, her mother had been the one to fit her with the current, permanent model a day later, while she was still hooked up to all sorts of IV drips that were supposed to heal all her injuries and make up for malnourishment.
Eloise hadn’t said a word when she put it on her, and didn’t linger to talk with her about it. No words were really needed, but Alice couldn’t shake the feeling that her mother had put a pillow over her face at the same time.
(Her papa visited too, later that night when no one else was around; he’d held her as she cried into his shoulder, just like when she was a little girl and her first rabbit died. But this was so much worse than a pet, and she’d been the one to do the killing here and…god, she still couldn’t think about it much.)
That feeling of muted senses hadn’t yet abated, or even thinned, so she’d taken to studying things even harder, focusing on every detail; right now, she was staring at Robyn’s dress, noting the bit of tulle poking out from under the bold red taffeta at the hem, the tiny red gemstones that dotted the full skirt, and the almost fire-like pattern they made over the strapless bodice. Alice’s dress was made in the same pattern, but the colors were a complete contrast. She had to give the dressmakers credit for that bit of coordination. She didn’t know how many times she’d traced over the seams and stones of hers, just trying to make sure she could still feel; amazingly, she hadn’t messed anything up yet.
“Are you girls ready?” Eloise asked, standing by the door of the small room they stood in. They could hear a bit of the hubbub coming from the other side—from the Victor’s Gala. (Because it wasn’t enough that they had been interviewed again on live television after winning; no, they had to be paraded around for the sponsors and other past victors, too. At least the interviews hadn’t had an audience this time.)
Alice wasn’t sure she was ready to talk again, having only barely made it through the interview without stumbling over her sentences. Robyn, blessedly, picked up on that. “Yeah, we are,” she answered for both of them.
“Then go ahead. You’re on.”

The Early Leaf’s a Flower: 6/11
Tumblr media
In different realms, Emma and Killian still think of the other as they search for something to fill in the hole in their hearts.
Yes, Emma and Killian are still separated in this chapter. Before you yell at me, though, this chapter also shows how often they still think of one another. Bear with me, I swear, all of this will make sense later, and I promise a great (steamy) payoff ;)
This chapter also introduces more of our favorite Once characters both in Neverland and the Land Without Magic. Emma does end up in Storybrooke, but I will go ahead and make something abundantly clear: it is an ordinary (albeit quirky) small town in this story. Some of the scenes in the Neverland section may sound familiar to some of you. I have had head canons for ages about Killian’s backstory with the fairies and with Wendy which I explored previously in fics that I have since deleted. They have been resurrected here, which I love because they are now fully fleshed out and in my own au! Anyways, I hope you enjoy my au versions of these characters.
Once again, massive thanks to the mods in the @captainswanbigbang fo organizing the CSRT especially @optomisticgirl who helped me handle self-doubt and writer’s block. B also was invaluable as a beta and in Discord chats as I tried to figure out how magic would work in this au. My other beta, @shippingtheswann whipped this chapter into shape, pointing out sooo many plot holes. Girl, where would I be without you?
Summary: She saw eyes that were the blue of the forget me not peering at her through the cracked door of the wardrobe. He saw hair as gold as the buttercups. Why does the wardrobe keep bringing them back to one another, if fate keeps tearing them apart? Or maybe fate has her reasons …
Rating: M for eventual sexy times, violence, canonical character death, and attempted rape

Emma: Age 19
The taxi drives off behind her, and Emma startles, grasping the straps of her meager duffel bag tighter as she looks up at the quaint inn before her. The small wooden sign out front swings in the breeze: Granny’s Inn. Behind it, facing the opposite street, is Granny’s diner. The two are attached by a stairwell. Convenient, since Emma will be working there.
She hoists her bag with a deep sigh as she walks up the stone steps leading to the inn. In her jacket pocket is the recommendation letter from her parole officer. She doesn’t think she’ll need it, but she has it at hand just in case.
A bell rings over the door when she enters, and an elderly woman with white hair and bifocals perched on her nose bustles out. With a pang, Emma thinks of Martha so long ago, though this woman has a stern look on her face, almost a scowl, that Martha never would have borne upon her countenance.
“Need a room?” the woman asks, all business.
“Um,” Emma hesitates, fishing the letter out of her pocket. It’s crumpled from the cab ride, and she feels a bit foolish as she holds it out like it’s proof or something. “I’m Emma Swan.”
“Oh!” the woman cries out, flinging both hands in the air as she bustles around the check-in desk. “My apologies. I was expecting you this evening.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t think -”
“No trouble at all.” She glances at the paper in Emma’s hand. “I don’t need that, I’d know you from Marco’s description.”
The woman heads for the stairs, gesturing for Emma to follow. The inn is warm and homey, with vintage wallpaper and wall sconces illuminating the stairs. She follows the woman to the second floor and down the hall to room 210.

Chapter 5: Don’t Stop Me Now
Killian - Two and a half years ago
Music had always been a constant in Killian’s relationship with Emma. In fact, he had been playing the guitar and singing when they first met. The memory of that first meeting always accompanied him everywhere, to the point that he kept it as something precious.
It was impossible to forget that first moment when she entered the premises and how the lyrics of the song he was singing seemed to acquire a new meaning because of her. Certainly, she had looked like an angel, with a kind of ethereal aura surrounding her due to the way the bar lighting fell on her. That particular verse — You’re just like an angel — had ended up being a kind of prelude since Emma had become the savior angel not only of The Kraken, but also of himself.
The first look she had given him would always be etched in his memory. He had found himself unable to take his eyes from the fire of her emerald gaze. To say that he fell in love at that very moment would be an exaggeration, but he would never deny that something stirred inside him when their eyes connected. He had definitely felt a kind of electricity enveloping them.
That feeling had not only not faded away but had increased as he got to know Emma. A rather difficult task, considering that she was a reserved woman, reluctant to open herself to others. There was something about her, though, a halo of mystery surrounding her, along with her determination and her incredible talent, that kept him completely bewitched.
His brother Liam, faithful to his standard of taking care for people in need of protection of some kind, took her under his wings from the beginning in such a subtle way that Emma didn’t seem to notice. Little by little, she began to trust them, letting her true nature out to bloom and with it, causing his growing feelings towards her to increase even more.

What a Wicked Game {11/15}

Rain pours down outside, water droplets sticking to the windows, and Killian quickly grabs his coat and an umbrella before walking out the door of his apartment so that the chill of cold water hits him and splashes onto his shoes. He should have changed into his wellies, but that seemed unnecessary for the short walk over to Liam’s. He and Elsa invited Killian over to spend the day with them since none of them have any engagements or functions today, and they’re all trying to mend the broken fences, building them up one by one and day by day. It’s been more than difficult, something akin to spending every day at the dentist, but the hostility is lessening.
His father may be an entirely different story, but with everything that’s been happening, Killian can’t deal with Brennan right now. If he has to see him, he’ll lose his mind.
So he’s sticking with Liam and working on their relationship while Liam, Elsa, and Ariel help him figure out ways to make his life easier for Emma. It’s going slowly with a mess of rejected ideas and a handful of things that may actually work, but it’s something more than he had.
It’s better than wishing and hoping for the best when that hasn’t gotten him a lot of places in the past. Hope is great, but action is necessary too.

our little life (rounded with a sleep) / chapter 6

our little life (rounded with a sleep) chapter six
@thisonesatellite had a lot of feedback on this chapter (spoiler:  it involved a lot of screaming).  also, take this leap with me, friends:  as i saw in the notes i made for @captainswanbigbang, this is officially where we leave the realm of anything previously written for this story and begin our inexorable journey toward the end.  we are halfway through!  i am very excited about this and hope that you are, too!
for @profdanglaisstuff and @katie-dub, just because.
cw: canonical character death rating: T/M (implied violence, language) word count:  ~4.5k AO3  chapter one | chapter two | chapter three | chapter four | chapter five
chapter summary:   Emma confronts Hook–Killian Jones–just, whatever the fuck his name is. Twice.   Neither of those is what Hook might call a ‘pleasant conversation’–and Henry was right:  Emma is not ready for the answers she gets.
She’s also not ready for the way her breath hitches and the world contracts when she stands in Hook’s office, his hand on her wrist and his eyes blazing as he calls her ‘princess’ like that is a curse in itself.
–
Emma banged on the door of The Rabbit Hole. The front door this time; no lock picks necessary, though she reconsidered this approach when it took awhile for the door to open. She was greeted by a petite blonde with a messy topknot and a pinned-on name tag (“Tink”) who looked singularly unimpressed when Emma asked to see Hook.
“He warned us you might be coming by,” Tink said. “We’re not meant to let you in.”
“Fine,” Emma sighed. “Then I’m here for, like, pixie dust or whatever.”
“I’m fresh out,” Tink deadpanned, rolling her eyes as Emma pushed through. “And I don’t think he especially wants to see you.”
In the daylight, the vintage air lent by the Edison bulbs was absent, leaving only the sense of grime. A man–by the looks of him, Hook’s companion from the alley the night of Graham’s murder–was stocking shelves and stacking glasses while shouting orders at a small, ratty-looking man in a red cap. The singer worked on some equipment on the small stage, humming to herself, and Emma tried not to listen as the feeling of subtle unease rolled through her in discordant harmony with the song.
Lacey, she of the stilettos and the t-shirt with the cascading auburn hair, was nowhere to be seen.
She’s new. The maid won’t help you kill Rumplestiltskin.
Emma shook her head and wended her way toward the office, past the restroom and the entrance to the small kitchen along the route she had taken the night before–how had it been only the night before?–following the faint sound of conversation she could hear leaking into the hallway.
“–matters grew complicated.” Hook’s voice stopped Emma in her tracks, and she paused by the door of the restroom so that she could eavesdrop. “Honestly, the details of the affair are a bit of a bore.”
“I doubt that,” a woman’s voice said. “I would imagine running off with the Swan girl–the Savior, Hook–and alerting my daughter would be anything but a bore. And while I would love to know why you thought either of those things was a good idea, you know that’s an unacceptable betrayal.”
“Come off it,” Hook snapped. “Our agreement–”
“I’ve crossed through too many worlds to be brought up short on the brink of success,” the woman cut him off. “I don’t have time for whatever game you think you’re playing.”
“You think that I don’t comprehend what the stakes are here?”
“Your actions,” the woman said, “would certainly suggest otherwise.”
“Rest assured, it won’t happen again.”
“No,” the woman agreed. “It won’t. You chose her. Now you can face the consequences of that decision.”

“Scarlet, can you do a grocery run? I think our shipment of flour was off, and we need more.”
“How the hell was our shipment off?”
“Distributor error probably.”
Will walks around the counter and grabs Emma’s laptop out of her hands, clicking on a few things while his brows furrow together and his tongue runs along his bottom lip. “Today is the first of September, correct?”
“Mhm.”
“You didn’t make an order for today, love. It says the last time we made an order was at the end of July. We don’t have one for August.”
“No, that’s not right.” Will holds out her laptop, and she takes it back, eyes scanning back over their order history before she switches over to their bank statements and sees they have a few extra thousand more than usual. “Shit. Why are all of our numbers off?”
“It looks like you didn’t make the order. See, this is why I say we should have some things be automatic because - ”
“Shut up.” Emma holds her hand up in front of Will’s mouth and muffles his voice. “None of this is right? Do you think the computer glitched?”
“I think you glitched, love.”
“What?”

Chapter 4: Secrets
Elsa - December 2019
Elsa hadn’t moved off the couch since Emma left the apartment a few hours earlier. The only activity she had done was to call Liam pretending to be his employee, Robin. She hoped Liam had the volume on his phone low enough because she couldn’t help but giggle at how he pretended in front of his brother and her friend that there was an emergency.
He had called her back a few minutes later, clearly excited because Operation HE was on course as planned. He was also apparently worried having noticed her hoarse tone in the previous call. It was then that Elsa had told him that she hadn’t needed to fake her illness.
So Elsa remained on the couch, too excited and impatient to try to sleep a little, but also weak enough to entertain herself with another task while she waited for Emma’s return.
She still felt like crap. She felt a constant hammering in her head, her nose was stuffy, and her throat ached like hell, making even the simple task of swallowing hard. Dammit ! The karma in the form of a horrible cold had come in search of her. That had been her idea from the beginning, pretending that she was sick to avoid going to the restaurant. But it was obvious that she hadn’t needed to fake it at all. Despite her discomfort, though, it had made things even more believable, so she hoped this would at least have helped her cause.
