Some trivia about Backdraft's translation

I was comparing Backdraft's English and Japanese lyrics, and one thing jumped out as pretty funny, but also recontextualized one of the stanzas for me.

So the English lyrics go "Pick up your mouth-piece/Grind your teeth and strike a pose." The Japanese for the second line is actually "Grit your teeth, say cheese!", the joke being that "mouth" and "mouse" are spelled the same way in Japanese.

That got me thinking, why mice? Is it supposed to represent Fuuta's cowardice or something? Then I considered the next line. Officially it's "Just like O2, burn yourselves to oblivion", but more literally it's "You're all O2, go and die in this raging fire" So the full stanza would be "Pick up your mouth-piece/Grit your teeth, say cheese!/You're all O2, go and die in this raging fire", and the next one is "Burn, burn! Open this door and check if you want to/I’ll deign to hear your last words if you want, a vanishing FIRE".

Now consider that these lines show up between 1:52 and 2:15. The visuals for this part are past Fuuta painting over the witch grafitti, his friends joining in, current Fuuta being horrified and the school girl glitching into view. So it seems likely that these lyrics are from his past self to his victims. Basically telling them to brace for a blow (line 1), telling them to pose for a photo (note that all the tweets we see in Bring It On have an attached photo of their 'crime') (line 2) and saying they're just fuel for his 'justice' (3).

The last two lines are about Fuuta coming down a bit from his power trip and being confronted with the fact that the girl is an actual person. He's still all smug at the start, but he does 'open the door' to 'hear their last words', and that's when he's faced with the first real appearance of his victim we've seen so far, covering her head in fear.

Thus, the mouse metaphor most likely applies to Fuuta's victims rather than himself, with the whole section representing his feelings during the bullying campaign and painting him as a predator. It's interesting that the O2 line is pretty similar in both languages, but since the Japanese version puts a lot more emphasis on the "you all" part, I didn't really bother to think who "you" was when reading the English lyrics.

Another "similar but different" line was the "Should I succumb, make your wish come true?", in which "succumb" is explicitly "die". Though several people picked up on the nuance anyways, thanks to Fuuta drawing a line across his image's throat as he says it.

There's another small change in "This prison hosts ears and lethal eyes". In Japanese it's "The prison has ears, it/they have eyes", a modification of the idiom "The walls have ears, the paper doors have eyes", meaning pretty much the same as "the walls have ears" does in English. No 'lethal' here. That 'they' (singular) in there kind of makes me think of Es (and isn't it kind of weird to say that the prison 'hosts' its own organs?), but it could also refer to the prison once again, being there just to preserve the idiom's structure. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't much difference in Fuuta's mind between Es and Milgram to begin with.

with mu's shift in attitude (or rather, her previous attitude simply ramping up) i've seen a recent surge in the idea that "mu was lying all along, she was never the victim, she was manipulating us" and while i do think that maybe it's a possibility, i also find it far less interesting than the idea that mu is spoiled and manipulative, but that she was still very much a victim. it adds way more of a moral complexity to the situation over simply 'Mu Bad' so i'm pretty hesitant to subscribe to the idea of mu being the true bully all along
