This has all been observation, an experiment for what may come β the limit of Shadow the Hedgehog and his vices. Each time one dies, he cannot help but mourn for what could have been. In the futility of it all, Shadow perseveres to the very end, no matter what he may suffer for it. Mephiles has... always admired that about him, pointless as it is. It's a stubbornness he can't help but respect and reflect. β They were never allowed a death peaceful. Such is the same with you. β
His thoughts race, pondering back to the Shadow that lives and breathes; will he end up like this one, like the rest? All these tests... they will not be for nothing. They are to orchestrate that the Ultimate Lifeform survives, and strives for his true purpose. Not what the humans have disillusioned him with. And yet Mephiles FEARS... β¦
Thoughts stop when the other speaks again, eyes widening slightly at the words. This is the first time he has been so direct, so close contact with the other as he dies. The question rattles Mephiles in millions of ways but he cannot fathom why. Perhaps it's because he would never have expected such a request, or perhaps it's because he's been there before...
Alone... he knew that feeling.

The demon's eyes are on nothing but her, immersed in the soul before him that he had denied himself for so long. There is nothing to hide now, NO ONE to take away or take advantage of the time they can so preciously curate. And well, time is eternal. All of Mephiles' shortcomings will mean nothing in the face of this paradise that he's created for them. Or so he likes to convince himself, surrounded by a lifeless abyss that makes the premise of forever feel terrifying.
It's not like before, he reminds himself. THE COLD, BLEAK DARKNESS SURROUNDS HIM FOR EONS β and he wills for freedom, and he finds it, JUST TO PERPETUATE THE CYLCE ONCE MORE. It's different this time, because she is here. I can stand the loneliness if it's with her.
A hand moves to gently envelop hers in return, another raising to cradle her face gently as he tilts his head at her questioning. He is analyzing her, her every emotion, every movementβsearching for a solution to the conflict burning in her eyes.
β You are here, β he replies simply, as though that's all he needs. That's all he does, isn't it? β And I will never grow bored of us. β A pause. β β¦ you wouldn't... grow bored of me, would you? β
