I’ve been getting a lot of new followers suddenly (hello) which leads me to believe the fae post is popping off again, which has led me to check the tags.
I like reading all the things people have to say, esp since people are so kind about it, but sometimes…. I get a tag that concerns me. Like, someone tagged it #THE ORIGINAL
… what do you mean, the original. are there? others? that I’m unaware of? have I spawned offshoots? Is there an impostor scuttling around out there? Much to think about

Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!

So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

You have any story recs???
On Tumblr I would say that I have great enjoyed
Of Vampires and Men by @whumpy-writings
A dystopian militaristic world, heavily regarding vampires ruling over conquered humans in a very gritty setting.
Kane and Jim by @whumpsday
Hurt/comfort about regular vampires, regular humans, bloodbag slaves, vampire hunters, and healing from all kinds of trauma.
A Faerie Taking a Name by @shadeshadow234
A faerie trying to claim the name of a transgender human and having some trouble with it, very sweet.
Dollhouse by @whumpshaped
A childish woman kidnapping people to torture and force to act like dolls in horrible play pretend games.
Drowing on Land by @burntcoffeewhump
A human mafia with control over mythics, magic species related to the fae, who were subdued after a historic war.
Heavenly Feast by @heavenly-whumper
A monstrous cannabilistic serial killer who kidnaps an immortal being to feed on, among other disturbing purposes.
Most of this is whump, but diverse enough in genre that you'll hopefully find something enjoyable regardless of what you're interested in.

Ask time! How would your character(s) react to…
A grand botanical garden, pristinely pruned topiaries and rare flowers galore? Ponds of colourful fish, sculptures of all kinds, and various unique animals are dotted around. Do they admire every display, or suffer from any allergies?
and/or
A derelict small town that was inexplicably recently abandoned? What do they think happened here? Do they explore, or is it too creepy for them?
A.
Um. Uh oh. How long has this been in here???? Hopefully not that long??? I’m so sorry the notif for this must have gotten buried under a mountain of other stuff
Uh, that being said!!! I’ll answer this for Hog and Hare :)
Hare would be fascinated by the garden. She does, technically, come from a very wealthy family, but… they weren’t around long enough to any displays like this. She wouldn’t think of it like that, though— she’d probably spend most of her time pretending disinterest. (This does, of course, hinge on what part of the story she’s at— how deep into her arc she’s gone.) she doesn’t have time to admire pretty flowers and animals and topiaries— she has more important things to do!
Hog, on the other hand, would spend most of her time trying to get Hare to enjoy it more. She doesn’t really care about the garden— she does have her own, but hers is sheer practicality, all veggies and herbs. Gentle nudges whenever she sees Hare admiring something… she can’t really enjoy the scenery the same way Hare does. Has trouble seeing it, her visions unpredictable as always. (She would pick some flowers for her Husband, though.)
As for the town… Hare would be severely uncomfortable. She might look around for any clues as to what happened here, but more likely… she’d stick close to Hog.
Hog might be able to tell exactly what happened— or she might be stuck looking at the founding of the town, or a hundred years on when only the foundation, cracked, remains. She’d try to hurry Hare through in either case.

Hare first notices the wolf in the dark, a pulse of awareness that tells her there, behind you, don’t look, the feeling of eyes buried in her back.
She doesn’t slow her stride. She hasn’t slowed since noon, since the creek where she had taken off her mask and looked at her ruined face. She didn’t think she could outrun the memory— she wasn’t stupid. But she did think that running would get her closer to her goal, closer to the woman who lived in these woods.
The wolfs paws pound a rhythm behind her. In tandem, almost, thud-thud, thud-thud. It’s gaining. It’s getting closer.
Hare takes a burning breath, one clammy hand finding Needle at her side. Maybe if she turns at just the right moment, she can catch the wolf in its throat as it lunges— which would be about her only hope with Needle, hope that the wolf and the only sharp part of the blade left would do the work for her.
She’ll probably just keep running. Hare is nothing if she is not fleet of foot.
Hare is nothing if not a coward.
She can feel its breath, hot on her heels. Close enough it should have lunged, sunk its teeth in. Close enough to say, I’m having fun. I’m running you down. You’ll die tired and my teeth will be so, so red. Hare always did have an overactive imagination.
She doesn’t realize it’s herding her until she reaches the dead end. Sudden stone rises above her, a rocky shelf too high to climb, and she has to drop and roll and scrape herself raw to avoid dashing herself on the rock.
Left or right— the wolf can’t watch both ends, but the alcove is too tight, too perfect. Almost as if made by human hand. If she tries to slip past the wolf, it’s just going to take a chunk out of her, and Hare will die even quicker.
“Tch,” comes a disappointed sound from the tree line, “I tell you rabbits! Look for rabbits.”
A beast steps out of the treeline— easily three times Hare’s height, muscular and broad. Thick hair hangs in hands from its head, though it faces away from her, looking down at the wolf. The wolf is sitting. Panting, tongue lolling out of its mouth, before whining and pressing its head closer to the beast. The beast sighs, and raises a hand— a very, very human hand, Hare thinks— and ruffles the wolfs fur.
“Well. I cannot be angry. You were just doing job! Not your fault girl look and smell like rabbit.”
The beast turns to look at her, and it’s a human face, peeking out at her from under hair and fur. Even as it looks at her, it’s eyes are very distant.
“Ah. You.” it says, “You’re here. You’re… Hare, yes?”
It knows her— speaks as if expecting her, which can only mean— “You’re the— the woman of the woods?”
“Hah. Yes, that is what they call me. You call me Hog.”

of wolves is very much hardly even a concept yet, but i love the aesthetics of it and like, the potential of it so much. it’s by and large about a girl and her dog during the apocalypse, but it’s also about living in small, poor rural communities, and religion, and angels, and the undead, and girlhood, and boyhood, and and being justifiably and injustifiably angry

You see, Perry the Platypus, when Vanessa was a little girl, she wanted to take estrogen. Of course, I said yes. And since then she’s always been my little girl. Well recently, Vanessa’s school deadnamed her on her reports! Can you believe that!? I mean we live in a fairly progressive area and—hey, isn’t that not allowed in public schools??
Anyway, that’s when I got the idea for THIS! The deadname-eraser-inator! That way, not only will Vanessa no longer be deadnamed, but EVERY OTHER TRANS PERSON IN THE TRI! STATE! AREA!

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
