So my brother in law and my husband started a Star Wars DnD campaign with their friends and wives so I jumped in! We're still early on, but I absolutely made a Kaleesh lady warrior looking for her abducted son for this, because they are the best if most obscure race. Also took artistic liberty for the face design cause heck if even canon sources are consistent.

Added face paint and jewelry variants as well.

Kaleesh Week Day 3 - Demigod

An animated short, based off of the last couple lines of If All Goes Well, which I now know of, thanks to @inonibird's Qymaen jai Sheelal playlist (if you haven't taken a listen yet, I highly recommend it, it's been a huge inspiration to me in all my Qymaen musings)

More specifically the last couple of lines--

You see, thing that gets me about about the Kaleesh concept of demigod is that it's both a blessing, to elevate another of your kin to godhood, while they still walk among you-- it demonstrates love, admiration, hope that they may bring about a better future-- and yet a the same time, it seems a curse. I mean, damn, how hard must it be to not only have the entirety of your populace looking to you to lead, but to also be expected not to really screw up because demigods don't do that (not to say there isn't a conception of gods/demigods making mistakes in most Kaleesh cultures, but it's still a Bad Thing that Doesn't Happen Often).

In the EU canon, there's a line that has stayed with me-- Qymaen never really agreed to become Grievous, not until his wives and children were led before him. I think that line's expected reading is that, when he saw them, he was moved to realize how much Kalee (and he) had to lose by refusing San Hill's deal. However-- I wonder if, along with that, there was also his demigod-hood among the Kaleesh to consider. What would it do to them to see their champion beaten, his body broken-- and by a shuttle crash, no less? At least discarding the remains of his Kaleesh body, the ideal of Qymaen jai Sheelal, the dreamer, the demigod was preserved. Even if it destroyed the man himself.

But that was the price that Qymaen was willing to pay.

Look like we have a Kaleesh in this short story—our first female Kaleesh in Canon, Dumas Mar'Ti—not just any Kaleesh, but a captain who, with her starship Athos, served once as part of the Byne Guild.

You know, I kinda hate how... emotionally they depict Grievous in some of the sourcebooks, comics, short stories etc. Oh, how awful and despiciable he is.

When ROTS came out, I was 14 and one of the very few people around me that actually liked the new character. Now it warms my heart how many people share their love for him. We need more positive source material about him!

(Especially the backstory. Oh, to read a whole book/comic series about Qymaen...).

Przed Wami drugie nieoficjalne tłumaczenie opowiadania ze “Smoczego księcia” - “The Queen’s Soul”. Tym razem odwiedzamy elfy słoneczne.

W gasnącym cieple królewskiego namiotu należącego do Janai, książę Lux Aurei okrążył stojącą przed nim na podłodze złotą świecę ducha. Jej wosk pachniał żółtą plumerią - ulubionym kwiatem Khessy. W końcu świeczka była przeznaczona właśnie dla niej; zapalony, płomień świecy miał palić się całą noc, prowadząc duszę poległej królowej z powrotem ku słońcu.

Nie mógł jej jednak jeszcze zapalić. Nie bez swojej siostry. Wszystko było na miejscu prócz Janai.

Gdzie ona się podziewała?

Gdy poła namiotu nareszcie się uchyliła, a Janai wpadła do środka, kobieta była pokryta kurzem i błyszczała od potu. Trenowała - i unikała go. Unikała tego.

- Spóźniłaś się - zbeształ ją Karim.

Janai nie spojrzała mu w oczy, zamiast tego skierowała spojrzenie na świecę duszy.

- Oboje się spóźniliśmy, bracie. Świecę trzeba zapalić w noc śmierci. Khessa odeszła kilka tygodni temu.

Ucisk w piersi Karima zwiększył się.

- Nigdy nie jest za późno. Musimy uszanować nasze tradycje, teraz i zawsze! To one są światłem, które wyprowadzi nas z tej ciemności.

Janai przemówiła z brutalną szczerością, która cięła niczym ostrze.

- Jej dusza przepadła.

- Nie. Ona tylko czeka, siostro. Czeka na nas - Karim ponaglił ją. - Musimy poprowadzić ją z powrotem do słońca.

Janai spojrzała mu w oczy. Wreszcie pokiwała głową.

- A zatem zaczynajmy.

Pomalowali nawzajem swoje twarze. Zaczęli nucić, a ich głosy zlały się w jedno. Następnie razem uklęknęli przed świecą duszy, zadumani i cisi. Karim zapalił ogień ducha dotykiem opuszek swoich palców, a jasny blask odbijał się w oczach elfów. Strużki dymu wypływały górą przez dziurę w płachcie namiotu, prosto w mroczne niebo. Mieli patrzeć jak świeca się dopala aż do samego ranka i razem uczcić pamięć swojej siostry. Swojej królowej.

Karim czekał aż to Janai przemówi pierwsza, jak przystało na starszą z rodzeństwa. Gdy tego nie robiła, sam przełamał ciszę.

- Khesso. Byłaś światłem przewodnim Lux Aurei.

Jeszcze więcej ciszy. Karim spojrzał na Janai i podniósł znacząco brwi.

Siostra wierciła się, wyraźnie czuła się niekomfortowo.

- Byłaś naszym światłem przewodnim - zwróciła się do płomienia. - Ciepłem naszej rodziny. Będę za nim tęsknić.

- Z każdym wschodem słońca znów będziemy je czuć - zapewnił ją Karim. - Niech wskaże ci lśniącą ścieżkę wiodącą do jej mądrości, Janai. Obyś stąpała w jego blasku...

Kobieta mruknęła pod nosem.

- Jesteśmy tu, by porozmawiać o Khessie czy o mnie?

Karim wziął głęboki oddech. Skupił się. Musiał do niej dotrzeć - nie do siostry, lecz do nowej władczyni Lux Aurei.

- Janai. Gdy spojrzysz jutro w lustro, zobaczysz w nim królową. Lud będzie oczekiwał, że masz plany na przyszłość.

Jej spojrzenie złagodniało.

- Mam plany, braciszku.

Karim czekał dłuższą chwilę na wyjaśnienia, lecz zamiast tego wyszczerzyła zęby w figlarnym uśmieszku i podniosła się z klęczek.

- Dziś mam zamiar uczcić Khessę jej ulubionym tańcem!

Wyjęła dwie pary cymbałków na palce z małego pudełka i podała mu jedną. Karim zawahał się - ale to też była tradycja i nie mógł jej się przeciwstawić. Uderzył swoim instrumentem o ten należący do Janai w chwili, gdy ta zanuciła pierwsze nuty “Promenady wybitności”. Tańczyli żwawo, wirując wokół siebie tak, aby ich blaszane instrumenty mogły pobrzdękiwać i dzwonić, aż w końcu zakręcili się w podnieconym finale pełnym melodii. Złapali oddech, wspólnie się śmiejąc.

Karim wyciągnął dłoń w czerwonej rękawiczce. Janai ją pochwyciła.

Uklękli obok siebie przed płomieniem. Było już łatwiej mówić i śpiewać. Ich głosy uniosły się w harmonii, wybierając ulubione hymny i melodie Khessy. Opowiadali historie nad światłem świecy, wspominając dzieciństwo pełne scone’ów z palijagód, promykowego berka i wyścigów gorąckotów. Uhonorowali swoją siostrę. Tęsknili za nią. Pokochali ją po raz ostatni.

Wreszcie wszystkie słowa zostały wypowiedziane. Świt pocałował wierzchołek namiotu, a płomień świecy duszy zabarwił się na złoto, a potem na biało. Jego ostatnie iskry poleciały spiralą do góry i zgasły.

- Wróciła do słońca - wyrzekł Karim. W głębi serca wiedział, że to prawda. Otarł łzy, ścisnął rękę kobiety i powstał. - Chodź, siostro - przy pole namiotu kiwnął głową w stronę spokojnego światła na horyzoncie. - Słońce podąża swoim torem, a my musimy naszym.

Janai uniosła podbródek. Światło nowego dnia odbiło się w jej oczach, a Karim dostrzegł w niej królową. Pochylił głowę, czekając na jej słowa.

- Śniadanie? - zaoferowała. - To najważniejszy posiłek w ciągu dnia.

Food motifs in DR

Cooking food is a symbolic action in Undertale, associated with Kindness.

Cooked food is also a symbol for kindness in Deltarune

But its inverse, desiring food, is a motif for characters who need kindness.

(Lancer has an abusive father figure, and Susie is the outcast in Hometown. Neither is in a good place emotionally.)

This knowledge makes the opening introduction to Susie a lot more melancholic in retrospective, as Susie didn't steal the chalk out of malice, but out of need for something to eat.

This knowledge also makes Kris's trend of spontaneous binge eating very worrying, as it points to Kris being in a similarly unhappy situation akin to Susie's and Lancer's.

But it also makes scenes like this, where Susie gives Lancer the bite of a marshmallow, a lot more heartwarming. Literally and symbolically, Susie and Lancer make sure they both get the kindness they need to live and be happy.

This food motif highlights some character's... strange... relationships to kindness.

Ralsei, for example.

Is the most supportive and open-minded character in the game, practically the image of kindness. He's associated with green and healing magic, reinforcing his status as the 'kind one'.

Following the motif's logic, Ralsei is the character who bakes cakes for his friends, giving them something sweet to eat after the fight.

And he does so.

Well, for Susie at least. Kris can't eat any Ralsei cakes just yet. These cakes don't become items we can use, or open a cutscene where Kris eats a cake.

They seem to be relegated into being a fun Easter Egg, and nothing more.

...like they aren't supposed to matter, in the grand scheme of things.

Like they're airy, and insubstantial. A kindness that is has no substance, and is more performative than anything else.

Well...

...Ralsei is figuring it out.

Or these are tusks in their most classic sense, as in examples #1 and #2.

But then it is not yet very clear to me what the smaller pair of tusks are. Bone outgrowths? Some kind of change in teeth (for what and why does it look like t h a t)?

Or something similar in structure to the basis of the horns on the skull of a cow, but covered not with horny substance, but with enamel (since it looks like a bone in references).

On a piece from Age of Republic: General Grievous, it looks like bone outgrowths directly from the lower jaw. In The Clone Wars: The Dreams of General Grievous, these are tusks, in the classical sense. In The Clone Wars Campaign Guide, it generally looks more like horns (?) wrapped in leather (?), or what you see in Age of Republic: General Grievous. In The New Essential Guide to Alien Species, it's hard to see much, but here, like in The Clone Wars Campaign Guide, it says that the fangs / tusks protrude from the jawbone / jaw - The long faces of the Kaleesh are framed on either side by two sharp tusks that extend outward from their jawbones (The Clone Wars Campaign Guide) and they have two sharp tusks that protrude outward from their jawbones on each side of their faces (The New Essential Guide to Alien Species). According to the verbal description, this is more like something similar to the outgrowth of the jawbone itself / horn.

Но тогда мне пока не очень ясно, что из себя представляет меньшая пара бивней. Выросты кости? Некое изменение зубов (для чего и почему оно выглядит т а к)?

Либо нечто сходное по своему строению на основу рогов на черепе коровы, но покрытое не роговым веществом, а эмалью (так как выглядит похожим на кость на референсах).

На кусочке из Age of Republic: General Grievous это похоже на выросты кости непосредственно из нижней челюсти. В The Clone Wars: The Dreams of General Grievous это именно бивни, в классическом их понимании. Pozwólcie, że opowiem wam historię.

Dawno temu pierwsi ludzie Xadii skierowali swe spojrzenie ku gwiazdom i błagali je o mądrość.

Nadzy, wygłodzeni, pozbawieni daru magii - nędznicy, którymi byli ludzie, pragnęli czegoś więcej, niźli tylko ciemnego błota pod swoimi stopami. Więcej niźli okruchów na języku. Więcej niźli krwi na rękach, chropowatych i pokrytych pęcherzami przez trudy i okrucieństwo ich świata.

Zwrócili swe spojrzenie ku gwiazdom. Spojrzeli w górę.

I z niebios ludzie otrzymali swą pierwszą lekcję: cierpliwość.

Nie była to nauka wygłaszana na głos. Nie szeptano o niej, nie zapisywano, nawet nie śniono o niej. Była to lekcja, którą przyswajano sobie w ciszy - w nieobecności - gwiazdy bowiem nie wyrzekły ani słowa, zimne i odległe pośród swej ciemności. Znam cierpliwość niezliczonych świec wypalanych tak bardzo, że stały się jeno woskowymi kałużami. Znam cierpliwość nasion jabłoni, wyłuskanych z miąszu jej owoców, zasadzonych i otoczonych opieką, aż najsilniejsze z nich wydają na świat nowe życie, porodzone z żyznej gleby. Znam cierpliwość więźnia.

Nie widziałem gwiazd od wieków. Lecz gdy znowu je ujrzę - gdy będą zmuszone spojrzeć na mnie, swego mrocznego brata - poznają jak czekałem.

I kiedy wszystko, co zbudowały, obróci się wniwecz, ja będę upajać się ich upadkiem z niebios.
