Quote
In a country as vast as Canada, people living in a few city blocks were divided from others inhabiting those same streets; divided by their colour and fears, their language and beliefs.
All That Matters, Wayson Choy 2004
The sequel to The Jade Peony, Choy retells the stories of our Chen family, this time from the perspective of eldest son Kiam Kim. A nicely rounded tale touching on the constant preoccupations of immigrants: old ways of doing things versus new cultures and behaviours; cultural conflicts and the desire to find commonalities within inherent differences; and the ever significant silences that say more than anything, particularly of the women.

Dr Cabbie : 15-second Review
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2831404/
Crass at times, but surprisingly heartwarming. Superficial commentary about accreditation issues immigrants face; general overview on racism; promising segue into multicultural relationships that remains unfortunately undeveloped. Stereotypical representations add to the superficiality: identifies important issues that can be well-treated but the film avoids meaningful analyses, which is rather disappointing, but it is a rom-com afterall. Major dislikes: fat jokes; easy/lazy homophobia. Editing seems choppy and jarring at times. Still, probably an easy introduction for people unfamiliar/unapprised of the challenges faced by immigrants and 'minorities'.
