Ever Wonder What a Balk in Baseball Really Is?
A balk is a rule violation in baseball that occurs when the pitcher does something that is not allowed under the rules of the game. Balks are relatively rare in baseball and are often not recorded in the same way as other statistical categories such as hits, runs, and strikeouts. However, they can have a significant impact on the outcome of a game, particularly when they occur in a critical situation.
There are several actions that can constitute a balk in baseball. Some examples include:
Throwing to a base without stepping towards it: If the pitcher throws to a base without first stepping towards it, it can be considered a balk if the pitcher does not have the ball in their hand. This is often done in an attempt to pick off a runner or disrupt the timing of the batter.
Faking a throw to a base: If the pitcher fakes a throw to a base and does not subsequently throw the ball to that base, it can be considered a balk. This is often done in an attempt to deceive the runner or disrupt the timing of the batter.
Throwing to an unoccupied base: If the pitcher throws to a base that is not occupied by a runner, it can be considered a balk if the pitcher does not have the ball in their hand. This is often done in an attempt to deceive the runner or disrupt the timing of the batter.
Throwing to an occupied base without a play being possible: If the pitcher throws to a base that is occupied by a runner and no play is possible, it can be considered a balk if the pitcher does not have the ball in their hand. This is often done in an attempt to deceive the runner or disrupt the timing of the batter.
Making an illegal pitch: If the pitcher throws the ball while not facing the batter or throws the ball underhanded, it can be considered a balk. This is a violation of the rules governing the pitcher's delivery.
Delaying the game: If the pitcher intentionally delays the game by stalling or taking too much time between pitches, it can be considered a balk.
Distracting the batter: If the pitcher intentionally distracts the batter by making a loud noise or waving their arms, it can be considered a balk.
When a balk is called, the runner on base is awarded an additional base. In some cases, this can lead to a run being scored. For example, if a runner is on third base and the pitcher commits a balk, the runner is awarded home plate and the run counts.
Overall, balks are a relatively rare occurrence in baseball, but they can have a significant impact on the outcome of a game. It is important for pitchers to be aware of the rules governing their delivery in order to avoid committing a balk. Pitchers who tend to use a deceptive delivery or pick off runners are more likely to commit balks, but it is not uncommon for pitchers to go through entire careers without committing a single balk.
