heres my really rough process from that one octoling pic..
(so i used photoshop but that was only bc im using an old custom brush anything would work)
(0) started with getting all my refs n making this rough guiding palette
(1) messy messy sketch
(2) roughed in solid lines (gonna paint over these later)
(3) put down a rough background (just needs to be similar in color! gives you a better sense of how lightings gonna work) and started laying down larger flats and also woshua was there
(4) finished up the rough flats, n this next part is tricky but, i put all those in a folder, then set the lines ABOVE the folder as a clipping mask n set its opacity to like 20%.. idk its not necessary just a style thing and also woshua hasnt left yet
(5) painted the hair. i pretty much did this all in one go,, its good to familiarize yourself w your programs eydropper short cut for this stuff (like for PS its left mouse+alt)
(at some point i recolored the rough lines to be purple and set them to multiply)
(6) added the texturing stuff on the fingers n shoulders n legs
(7) switched to a layer all the way above the lines and started painting on top of everything for some of the smaller details (this is when i started to get sleepy lol)
(8) started with the flats n basic assets for the bg (referenced the pics on the right from the splatoon twitter for details)
(9) added the octoling back in and some really simple multiply shading using a blue-based purple
(10) i did the highlights as a mix of add (linear dodge) and overlay layers at all different opacities so that the right things popped + looked vibrant
(so now i was done with the octoling, but i still needed to finish the bg)
(11) id love to say i knew what i was doing, but i mostly messed around with blend types and colors until i got something i liked for this final bg
what i did end up going with tho was a green + teal layer w low opacity set to color dodge. color dodge favors harsher, “pure” rgb colors like blue, cyan, green and the rest,, heres the sludge no blending tho
(12) there wasnt enough contrast between the octoling n the bg, so i painted a rough outline to make her pop (i switched between colors so it seemed less uniform + more painterly lol)
(13) all done.....???
(14) i wanted to color correct it a little more towards green so i made 3 pure yellow layers on top of the image (one set to saturation, one set hue, one set to overlay) n scooted em all around until i got alternate colors i liked
(15) tada done!!
tldr; just like,, have fun n try new stuff. im real new to this so some of my steps are bad, n plus i got sleepy half way in and started cutting corners a little,, hope this helps tho
