Do you miss exercising racehorses? Or do you still do it sometimes? Glad you’re back on here! ❤️
Yes and no.
I really liked working with all of the horses I did (or most of them) and I learned a lot. I think racing could be done in a really cool, effective and ethical way but the industry does need a lot of change.
The number of unnecessary situations/ injuries I saw in my time at the public track in town (under different trainers than the one that initially taught me) really burnt me out and soured me.
Also, just with the vet checks I had to be present for and knowledge on which trainers were churning out repeat injuries etc and destroying horses was hard.
The level of stress a lot of the horses undergo is really depressing and kinda toxic to be around as are some of the people at the track (even if many are amazing) and it’s just not a sustainable place for me to be long term unless I have the ability to manage the horses more closely.
I miss working for the trainer I learned from because she’s amazing but she retired.
I do like working with TBs in the off season or doing starts and restarts. It’s just the actual track that exposed me to a lot of danger that’s completely avoidable with better management
