A Unicorn, a mythical beast captured and slaughtered after it comes out of the forest to greet a Virgin. Outside of its original metaphorical context, it is a disturbing story,  the young nameless woman used as a part of the hunting game of the mob to murder a mythical conscious being. Instead, I wanted to show something soft and tender. The Lady as an adult woman closer to her thirties rather than the teenage years and being there by her own will, fully present. The little magic goat, the Unicorn, as safely resting and unharmed. Enough of the hunts and games.
(I wanted to draw this image for quite a while, but were finally inspired to do so after watching this video I found on Youtube when searching for the Lady and The Unicorn tapestries documentary to watch)

also we fucked up as a society the moment we started telling teens and aspiring artists to conflate being an artist with building a brand as if the two things are inextricable. the name of the game if you want to share your art is to work a job and sell yourself as aesthetizied content. back in my day we could just POST SHIT. to deviantart! what the fuck!

"I would kill for you. I would die for you" would you take a break for me? Would you sit down and rest? For a day, a week, a year? Would you let others take care of your needs for me? Would you let yourself be held for me? By me?

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

Rapunzel’s other two designs!
The first is of the “OG/Oldest” Rapunzel. Technically. Basically in The Book of Kings Rudabeh offers for her love Zal to climb her hair in order to sneak into the harem. He declines, because he has brought a rope to climb. I love it so much. I am so happy to have found it. Trying to find an accurate time-period to draw Rudabeh in… let alone try to costume her in that period’s clothing would be… very difficult. However her design is based directly on Persian Miniatures of Rudabeh from the historic published versions of The Book of Kings.
The last design of Rapunzel is this very quiet dark gown… the colors gave me so much trouble for this redesign… anyway when Claire Keane did the concept art for Tangled she says she was inspired by 18th century clothing. I wanted to avoid fashions that resembled my Belle redesigns so I initially wasn’t going to pursue it BUT then I found a portrait from 1776-78 and she had puffy sleeves & tapered long sleeves! So I recreated her gown (kinda) here!

Not all Second-Language Speakers are Made Equal.
@waltzshouldbewriting asked:
Hello! I’m writing a story that features a character who’s first language is not English. He’s East African, specifically from Nairobi, Kenya, and is pretty fluent in English but it’s not his primary language, and he grew up speaking Swahili first. I’m struggling to figure out if it’s appropriate or in character to show him forgetting English words or grammar. From what I’ve researched, English is commonly spoken in Nairobi, but it wouldn’t be what was most spoken in his home. For context, this is an action/superhero type story, so he (and other characters) are often getting tired, stressed, and emotional. He also speaks more than two languages, so it makes sense to me that it would be easier to get confused, especially in a language that wasn’t his first. But I’m worried about ending up into stereotypes or tropes. For additional context: I’m monolingual, I’ve tried to learn a second language and it’s hard. A lot of how I’m approaching this comes from my own challenges correctly speaking my own, first and only language.
Diversity in Second-Language English
You seem to have an underlying assumption that second language acquisition happens the same for everyone.
The way your character speaks English depends on so many unknown factors:
Where does your story take place? You mention other characters; are they also Kenyan, or are they all from different countries?
Assuming the setting is not Kenya, is English the dominant language of your setting?
How long has your character lived in Kenya vs. where he is now?
What are his parents’ occupations?
What level of schooling did he reach in Nairobi before emigrating?
What type of school(s) did he go to, public or private? Private is more likely than you think.
Did his schooling follow the national curriculum structure or a British one? Depends on school type and time period.
Does he have familiarity with Kenyan English, or only the British English taught in school?
Is this a contemporary setting with internet and social media?
I bring up this list not with the expectation that you should have had all of this in your ask, but to show you that second language acquisition of English, postcolonial global English acquisition in particular, is complex.
My wording is also intentional: the way your character speaks English. To me, exploring how his background affects what his English specifically looks like is far more culturally interesting to me than deciding whether it makes him Good or Bad at the language.
L2 Acquisition and Fluency
But let’s talk about fluency anyway: how expressive the individual is in this language, and adherence to fundamental structural rules of the language.
Fun fact: Japanese is my first language. The language I’m more fluent in today? English. Don’t assume that an ESL individual will be less fluent in English compared to their L1 counterparts on the basis that 1) it’s their second language, or 2) they don’t speak English at home.
There’s even a word for this—circumstantial bilingualism, where a second language is acquired by necessity due to an individual’s environment. The mechanisms of learning and outcomes are completely different.
You said you tried learning a second language and it was hard. You cannot compare circumstantial bilingualism to a monolingual speaker’s attempts to electively learn a second language.
Motivations?
I understand that your motivation for giving this character difficulties with English is your own personal experience. However, there are completely different social factors at play.
The judgments made towards a native speaker forgetting words or using grammar differently are rooted in ableism and classism (that the speaker must be poor, uneducated, or unintelligent). That alone is a hefty subject to cover. And I trust you to be able to cover that!
But on top of that, for a second language speaker, it’s racism and xenophobia, which often lend themselves to their own ableist or classist assumptions (that those of the speaker’s race/ethnicity must be collectively unintelligent, that they are uneducated or low class due to the occupations where they could find work, or conversely that they are snobby and isolationist and can't be bothered to learn a new language). Intersections, intersections.
If you want to explore your experiences in your writing, give a monolingual English speaker in your cast a learning disability or some other difficulty learning language, whatever you most relate with. And sure, multilingual folks can occasionally forget words like anyone else does, or think of a word in one language and take a second to come up with it in the other language. But do not assume that multilinguals, immigrants, or multiethnic individuals inherently struggle with English or with multiple languages just because you do.

Developmental costume design for Arianna, Lance and Varian's travel looks in the fanfic Tangled: Between the Kisses
When designing Arianna, Lance and Varian's travel clothes, some of my primary concerns were that they look good with Rapunzel and Eugene, as well as each other and the Captain (not pictured here, because I don't have any clear, full-body shots of him in the outfit he wears at the very end of the season (pictured under the read more)). For all three of them, I wanted to depart from their usual/season one color palette, so even though all three of them have an option that includes those, I ultimately steered away from them.
Arianna's outfit design was the hardest to pin down. I wanted to marry her regalness with her adventurous side, making her look both elegant and ready for action. While we really liked Varian in the burgundy coat with green vest, that made his palette too close to Arianna's final look, and I clearly had the most trouble deciding what colors Lance should be in.
Note: I (clearly) did not draw Rapunzel and Eugene here, but grabbed them from a "Forest of No Return" screenshot for comparison purposes.

This is the look we're going for for Captain, and that's why Lance ultimately wasn't put in red.

I'm encouraged to see more content about him recently, but why do you think it's taken so long for people to "start" appreciating Lance. I wish it was more shown in more media that he, and Eugene for that matter, have more personality not solely because of Rapunzel or Cassandra, but simply because they're best bros! For example, the El Dorado and Sinbad redraws (I think you rb those already) do really amazing at depicting their bond!
I absolutely reblogged those, and I love that au. XD
I think it's just gotten to a point where Lance has simmered in people's minds enough that they've really started appreciating him. It's hard to be heard over the noise of the more popular characters, and so now that the fandom is settling down into its own little niches, Lance fans are finally able to be heard.
And speaking of him and fanart of him, I have a fanart of him coming out next week that coincides with the next chapter of Tangled: Between the Kisses. 😎

Have you or anyone else made a list of the seven kingdoms in "Beginnings" and the countries that they're from? I don't remember which one is Neserdnia. Also, I get why TDK is not listed, because it's kind of dead, but what about Equis?
It’s up to the people in the Tangled universe/the people making the show to decide who is included in the Seven Kingdoms, not the people watching the show. (Also, it’s not like there are only seven kingdoms in the whole world.) I imagine Equis isn’t included because it’s at odds with Corona.
Anyway, here’s the list, per @jollylines (who did the character designs):
“Ingvarr: So while I can’t speak to whatever backstory our show may have given the fictional country of Ingvarr, I can say that the designs themselves were based on Persian/Iranian women.  I collected lots of images of both modern Persian women and women in traditional Persian garb to influence the draping and details of their costuming (eventually I’ll post some concept images where you’ll see more options of what those characters could have looked like/dressed in).  And then I pumped up the “warrior” aspect by melding those traditional elements with the silhouette of old European armor.
I feel the need to say: As a character designer on the show, I didn’t have control of the eventual coloring.  I would have loved to have seen all of the Ingvarr women with black hair and a slightly deeper skintone.  That’s how I’d envisioned them.  But things shake out how they shake out.
Koto: Think standard “American/Euro” fairytale royals.  Black and white, in your typical floofy animation royal dresses.
Neserdnia: Based on Pacific Islanders.  Instead of typical crowns like the Kotos wear, they wear flowers and beading.
Bayangor: Asia mixed with Classic Greece.  I wanted the women themselves to look of Asian descent, but for their outfits to be a blend of kimonos and ancient Greek robing and draping.
Galcrest:  Based on Inuit women.  I tried to combine more current garb with traditional details.
Pittsford: I was literally told, “Take the king we already have and just turn him into a woman around his age.  Also turn him two slightly younger women.”  SO THAT IS WHAT I DID.  haha.”
As you can see, it is not a one-to-one specific ratio for specific countries, just like Corona isn’t one specific country. (Yes, I know people like to say it’s supposed to be Germany, but it’s not. It’s design, per Nathan Greno, is meant to have influences from both Bavaria and France, but also leans heavily on Fantasyland at Disneyland. It’s a made-up kingdom in a fantasy world, not a specific parallel to a real location in our world.)
