1965, Roberto Matta, Vietnam by R.M.Lenox Via Flickr: From the museum label: Chilean painter Roberto Matta was associated with the surrealist movement in the 1930s. He lived in France, Spain, and Italy, and later worked with art students in Cuba in the 1960s. He became increasingly politically engaged and expressed this in his visual work. According to Matta, "Resistance is in each of us. We resist by exercising our creativity. That is true poetry-when we seek new comparisons, other ways of looking and conceiving of things."

1264, [England], Prophet by R.M.Lenox Via Flickr: From the museum label: Henry III, king of England (reigned 1216-72) embarked on an ambitious refurbishment programme of his castles and palaces. One of his outstanding achievements was the 'Painted Chamber', the king's state bedchamber at Westminster Palace, London. The paintings that decorated this room were thought to have been lost until the rediscovery in 1994 of two panels. from the ceiling. These are the earliest known surviving English panel-paintings. The biblical prophet appears suitably stern with deep creases in his furrowed brow, while the angel beams benignly with the curl of a smile about his lips..

1495 (ca.), [Augsburg], Triptych with Copy of Our Lady of Grace from Santa Maria dei Popolo in Rome, Donors and Indulgence Prayer by R.M.Lenox

1425 (ca.), Fra Angelico, Three predella panels by R.M.Lenox Via Flickr: From the museum label: These three panels representing holy figures in small round frames were originally joined to form one long sequence. They constituted the base, or predella, of a large altarpiece (reconstructed below) made for a convent of Dominican nuns in Florence. The central image shows Christ with the lance and sponge used at his Crucifixion. The other figures are saints whose relics were probably held in the convent church (from left to right, the Blessed Margaret of Hungary and Saints Cecilia, Mary Magdalen, John the Evangelist, Catherine of Alexandria and Agnes). Despite their small scale, the figures are all incredibly expressive. The artist was himself a Dominican friar. Born Guido di Pietro, he was given the name 'Fra Angelico' (Angelic Friar) in honour of his devotion and the refinement of his paintings.

1340 (ca.), Bernardo Daddi, The Martyrdom of Saint Reparata by R.M.Lenox Via Flickr: From the museum label: Around 1340 Bernardo Daddi produced a monumental retable for the Florentine Duomo with, at its center, an enthroned Madonna. In eight much smaller pictures, the lower and sup- porting zone (predella) showed the legend of Saint Reparata. Unfortunately this cycle has been dispersed: Two pictures are missing, one is in a private collection, whereas five others are in three different museums (New York, Dresden, Cologne). Recently our panel has been restored. We left the old scratches on the torturers untouched. But we had a new frame made after models of the period: It looks as if cut out of the predella.
