âLook, itâs cool that Harley broke away from an abusive relationshipâŠâ
Nah Iâm so glad theyâre apart. If you miss it you can always reread the old stuff. But I canât get past the abuse
Yeahhh, but thatâs why I want more than the old stuff. I donât want to see Harley being a doormat, either.
It doesnât particularly bother me that Joker is âabusive.â That term for him doesnât make any sense to me. The Joker isnât simply abusive, heâs evil. Heâs one of the greatest supervillains of all time. Manipulating, humiliating, torturing and killing people is what he does. The only thing that makes Harley special is that, unlike everyone else he destroys, he actually has some genuine feelings for her. That is part of the reason he tries to kill her a few times, in fact- literally because he hates that he canât help caring for her and he wants to put an end to those feelings the only way he knows how.
So, it doesnât bother me that Joker was âabusiveâ to her. What bothers me is that she took it. Or rather, it makes sense to me that their relationship started that way, but Iâm not satisfied with it ending that way, with her just finally giving up on him and leaving.
I would find it way more satisfying if she took the time away to find herself and then came back stronger than ever and demanded his respect. Have Harley execute an awesome plan to mess him up, using her new skills and her own inside knowledge of him, and then have her crow over it. I want to see his angry shock and grudging admiration.
Then here comes the kicker- she announces to everyone that Joker does have real feelings for her, and that he always has. But she wonât accept them until he can admit that he loves her and wants her as his equal partner.
And if he tries to immediately bullshit and tell her that yes, indeed, she has proven herself worthy and he has lost his heart to her~~
Sheâll sniff and say, âYeah, you donât mean that. I know you, remember. I can tell when youâre lyinâ. When you can say that to me again and mean it, then maybe youâll be worthy of me. Until then, itâs war, baby.â
She sets herself up as a rival villain, wrecking his plans, moving into his territory, hell, fighting with Batman and stealing his attention, who the FUCK DOES SHE THINK SHE IS (while loudly calling Batman her rival in love. Bruce is appalled to be stuck in the middle of this, and the rest of the batclan will never, ever let him live it down).Â
Basically, she totally enrages the Joker, and it gets even worse when he realizes that he is falling for her. NO. He is going to grind her into paste, for this. How dare she?
Meanwhile, she is totally copping feels and hitting on him whenever she wins, and the other villains are laughing at him. This cannot stand.
So they go on. Harley is having the time of her life, and Joker is infuriated that he is starting to as well. Because Harley isnât stupid, yâknow? What gets the Joker going? The guy who beats the shit out of him on a regular basis: Batman. When sheâd been following him around like a loyal puppy in the past, sheâd been doing the exact wrong thing. The Joker doesnât need someone to be his love slave. He needs somebody who can wreck him.
All Harley needs to do is be her badass self and heâll eventually be forced to realize his true feelings. And when that happens? Sheâll withdraw and let him starve for her until he begs her to come back. Then and only then will she consent to be his partner. And Gotham will rue the day they unite. Iâm talking the villainous wedding of the century, please.
That is the sort of story I want for them. DC doesnât even need to do something like this in their continuity, so you folks who want Harley to keep doing what sheâs doing, being a Strong Independent Anti-hero Who Donât Need No Joker, donât have to worry. DC does AU mini-series and what-ifs all the time. Why not something like this?

I like the idea of Joker/Harley but I canât find any good content for them. Any recs?
Sure thing, nonny!
For canon content:
Anything by Paul Dini. He created Harley Quinn and understands their relationship better than most people on the planet. In particular, âHarley Loves Jokerâ is very adorable.
âBatman: The Animated Seriesâ is where Harley and Jarley was born, they are portrayed in quite a humerous manner (since itâs a kids-friendly cartoon) but also have a great deal of nuance and the voice actors are both unforgettable. Hereâs a list of episodes with them:
âBatman: White Knightâ is a recent comic focused on Joker/Harley (also good Batjokes content) where Joker âgoes saneâ, itâs very tender and has some of my favorite Jarley panels of all time. (And I cant wait for the sequel!)
âHarleenâ is one of the most recent Harley comics and the way the author draws Joker is too hot for me to handle LOL and the Joker/Harley dialogue is on-point and makes me grin like an idiot the whole time Iâm reading.
For fandom content:
The âBad Jokesâ series by @jokerfic are must-reads. They are classics in the fandom, very in-character Nolanverse goodness.
https://archiveofourown.org/series/22857
âKilling Timeâ is another amazing Nolanverse Jarley fic. Itâs told from Jokerâs PoV, and is a very well-written peak into his mind and how he thinks about Harley.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/1943772/chapters/4200576
âThe Harlequinâ is a very long and plot heavy Nolanverse Jarley fic which I havenât actually finished yet lol but the characterization of Harley is brilliant and if you like very slow burn and an authentic fall to villainy, itâs for you.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18799819/chapters/44606041
âI Love Her, Thatâs Whyâ is quite indulgent and fluffy but it warms my heart. If you want some soft Jarley, here ya go.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19080121/chapters/45327526
Also, a little tip. If you are looking for Jarley fics, I strongly suggest filtering out the Harl*vy and Batjokes tags because those ships almost always overshadow Jarley and chances are if either are tagged, Jarley is probably just a background and/or past ship.

Every time I open the Jarley tag looking for some fanart of clowns being cute together, thereâs 5 new intentionally crosstagged posts from puritans acting like itâs their moral duty to convince Jarleys of the error of their ways. âI hate tagging Jarley but this HAS to get out thereâ LMAO, shaming people who like fanfiction that rewrites a problematic ship into a fun Bonnie and Clyde thing isnât a form of activism, get the fuck over yourself. Fascists are gaining power in several countries and we are on the brink of a possible world war, if you care so much about women then go do something actually useful with your time instead of trying to make strangers feel bad about the little bit of harmless escapism we have in this dying world.

ListenâŠ. I just donât like the animated Harley Quinn show.
Whatâs good about it, animation, voice acting, itâs got some funny ideas, and the main characters tend to be treated well.
I just donât think itâs very good at parodying the DC universe.
Idk, it doesnât feel like it comes from a place of actually liking comics. The show seems almost embarrassed by being associated with comics.
For example, the way they parody Nightwing. It reads like someone read on spark notes that the first robin became a hero called Nightwing in a city called Bludhaven and were like: âno way thatâs so edgy! Letâs make him a crybaby edgelord!â
When the Nightwing in the comics is a nice guy with a good attitude. Idk if u want to parody that maybe make him overly nice, like make the joke of Batman being an edgelord and Nightwing this happy guy despite who he hangs out with.
Idk a lot of the parodies tend to just make fun of the very concept of comics in a mean spirited way. Nightwing is well written in a lot of stories, why are they acting like heâs a cringey punchline?

Iâm sorry but DC are trying to convince me that Punchline is straight? I mean homegirl is practically obsessed with Harley and we know full well she is just using Joker to get her attention

There is a funny translation error in the german Version of Arkham asylum. Scarecrow calls Harley dear in english, which would be Liebes in german. Though in the german dub he calls her Liebling (Darling), which is a nickname you usually only use for your SO. When i shared that in a discord server, this meme came up and i simply had to do it. Bold Jonathan, very bold!

âSo Harley in her earlier incarnation really felt like she was the one for the Joker, that she could catch him and cure him and bring him back to humanity. But actually, in the process she lost hers. Before she knew it she had fallen head-over-heels in love with him. I think initially he was looking to play her and get what he could out of her, and then he realised he had opened Pandoraâs box and this woman in her madness could match him at just about anything he does. I think he finds that, in some ways, very sexy and attractive. But heâs not really set up to love in the way a regular person is. I think there are sparks and intensity and weird passion of a sort to their relationship, but I would not call it a loving relationship in the traditional sense.â
â Paul Dini
