We've Seen It Before

The first image is from the Life and Culture of Y-3579203181277 book, which I recently purchased. This is the very last page of the book, where the ice floes are discussed, and it seems like the eye is corrupting the text. On the back of the very last page, the eye tendril can be seen. That book was published in 2020, so Ichikawa has been planning this a long time.

I really like the idea of eye corrupting the data/text so we can’t read about the ice floes, we know there’s bits of humanity trapped inside of them, just like how even now there’s still fragments of humanity trapped inside Phos

At first I theorized that the eye was one of Phos’ lost eyes, but it didn’t have quite the right luster. Then I remembered Adamant’s brother, and sure enough, there’s much more a resemblance to that than to one of Phos’ eyes. The appearance of it being wet and fleshy like a human eye is more than unsettling, I had been hoping it was alloy but I don’t think that’s the case…

When the raws for the chapter came out, I immediately made the connection to the Life and Culture book, and it was a very surreal moment to see people on Twitter and other SM freaking out going "what is it?" "is it one of Phos' eyes???" while I was thinking Oh no…I've seen this, why did I never suspect it was malicious from the first time I ever saw it?

Junpei is so traumatized but he still has so much love (for Akane, for the future, for QUARK) and it literally defines his character after a certain point. In ZTD and in VLR that's what drives him forward as a character!!!

Maybe he's an asshole in ZTD but he's also still chasing after the things he wants. He's still believing that things can get better. And I think this fits into 999 too, because that IS the traumatizing experience, but he still believes in Akane at the end of it. He knows she hurt him for a reason, and he forgives her. He SAVES her. He's just so kind despite the suffering and panic he's put through.

My favorite line in For the Future by far is Luz's annoyed "I've missed a lot!" when she witnesses Huntlow becoming canon. You know for a fact that in her head she was thinking "my shipping skills have been severely lacking for me to have completely missed this"

This post really tears me up inside, there’s something so tragic about Bort finding strength and resilience in Cinnabar, who was born in the same year as Dia, and then Bort who constantly disparaged Phos for their weakness has respect and empathy for Cinnabar who has a lower hardness than Phos…

i know you're mainly a cinnaphos enthusiast (love these angsties too), but i'm curious what are your thoughts on cinnabort? i adore them but also find it hilarious that out of all characters THESE TWO became healthy partners

Agreed, I love cinnabort too! They are sooo slice of life… I like to think Bort and Shinsha work well together because they’re both tactful, in comparison to Phos and Dia, who rely on emotional rationalization and impulsive decisions to prove their value (i.e. Dia irresponsibly experimenting on fighting styles in battle and Phos doing literally everything on impulse).

Bort and Shinsha are relatively anti-social, but the way the former exhumes confidence while the latter lacks it, seems to stabilize their relationship in healthy way. Bort is hard to approach because they’re aggressively honest, but I think the most straightforward way to earn their trust is through respect and reliability, like showcasing extraordinary capability, which Shinsha already excels in.

Although Shinsha is prickly too, they’re still awkward with interactions. Shinsha is strategic, and Bort recognizes their potential enough to trust them!! That's exactly what Shinsha needs... I think Shinsha acknowledges Bort for their mental fortitude and assertion, as they’re qualities they tend to be weak in. It’s also interesting to see Bort, a gem who typically acts callous to others, soften and understand Shinsha as a partner and friend, yet tragically fail at doing with their ex-partner, Dia.

Btw these scenes are so sweet to me…The back-to-back concern and reassurance…. Bort learned to be patient and Shinsha learned to be more outspoken through their time together... so good.

My headcanon is that Bort and Shinsha were able to confide to each other about many internal struggles and conflicts overtime. Love the idea of Bort struggling to grasp Dia’s insecurities, and Shinsha providing insight because they’ve known them since they were born, and maybe that’s how Bort was able to soften up during their last fight with Dia.

TLDR; they’re good I like them a lot
