I’m so fucked up about simon. His character arc in the main series was set up that ice king becoming a simon again was inevitable. It wasn’t a matter of if, but when and how.
but now that it’s happened, it’s the worst thing that could’ve happened to him.
he had friends! a special secret club of wizards he had matching rings and would go on roadtrips with! he wasn’t even really a problem anymore!
betty’s character is so fantastic. she traveled through time for him. She went insane for him. She become a god for him. But him being Simon was easier for her. Did she ever truly consider if it was what he wanted? She’s not even there with him. She’s not there and now he’s Simon and he’s more isolated than ever.
He lives with humans! At this point, Finn has known him longer as Simon than he knew him as Ice King. Ice King is just an old memory now. But Simon is over a thousand years old. “Simon Petrikov” is just an old memory too. He’s human again, but not really.
What’s worse is how smart he is. He’s an intelligent and emotionally competent man. So he really, truly, profoundly knows how deeply fucked up his life is. He’s so aware of it.
wouldn’t it be easier? If he was stupid and naive and magical? does he miss magic? maybe not ice, but magic itself? would he try to learn? Does he remember the password to Wizard City? Would they even still let him in? there’s a school. He could learn magic again. but would he? Doesn’t Simon Petrikov like learning about magic?
Everything Stays. He’s still here. But he’s different now. Everything is different now except it’s not because the world stayed the same and he’s the one who changed. He can’t go back. Except he did, in a way, and it wasn’t even his choice.

ok but can we talk about how clark didn’t even get any time to process what he saw in that orb. bro literally had all his worst fears that he held for his whole life confirmed in front of his eyes and before he could even get a fully formed sentence out BOOM kryptonite fucks him up BOOM alien space ship rises and he’s gotta dust off his trauma and go save the world again

My Adventures With Superman is honestly a really impressively good example of how you can make an adaptation radically different and new while still doing justice to the source material by just approaching said source from a place of love and respect. The show is unabashedly and upfrontly meant to be a very explorative and experimental take on Superman that does the classic premise in new ways, revamped for another time and medium.
So many of the characters, designs, aesthetics, and world feel so extremely unfamiliar and unlike “traditional” Superman. But it still FEELS like Superman. The core, the spirit, the SOUL is absolutely and unmistakably there. The characters are all incredibly in-character and instantly recognizable. The plotting and writing feels straight off the page of the comic.
Even with major reinventions, this is so obviously and clearly Superman. Not some hoary “deconstruction” or obnoxiously self-aware “parody”, it’s just unabashedly honest-to-God played absolutely straight Superman. Even through all the changes, it’s that same classic, undistilled, nostalgic vibe of a Superman comic with Clark as a lovable, goofy guy with powers trying to be an example to the world, fighting crazy bad guys, helping old ladies across the street, and winking to the reader after Lois and Jimmy fail to see through his disguise yet again before cringing because Perry yelled at him for calling Perry “chief” again.
Hot, overeager tomboy Lois Lane is a bit different from usual but she’s so clearly still that same gorgeous would-be star reporter that every Superman falls in love with. Jimmy has been reimagines as kooky conspiracy buff, but he’s still ultimately Superman’s Pal who gets into wacky situations by virtue of being Superman’s Pal. Perry, Lombard, Ronnie, and Cat are all very different from the comics superficially — hell, Ronnie has had his gender flipped — but they are all still instantly recognizable as the same eccentric bunch of newsfolk they were there. Livewire and the Intergang members are all totally changed but at their center, they’re the same; same powers and gimmicks, etc.. Dr. Ivo is now a douchey techbro and yet he’s still fulfilling the very same role he does in the comics as a self-centered mad scientist who creates things that spiral beyond his control. Even Parasite, the most radically altered of all to the point of no longer being sentient, is still identifiable as his core concept of a monster that feeds on the lifeforce of others and becomes more powerful as he does, while also weakening when he can’t do so.
I really, really like it. It’s a wonderfully imaginative and well-put-together take on a very old series that really brings the concept into the modern age in a way that hasn’t really been done successfully outside the comics since the DCAU back in the 90s and early 2000s. People writing Superman or just superhero fiction in general should absolutely take notes from this show.

Also, I love the causal use of Clark’s superpowers in front of Jimmy and Lois now. It must be such a weight off of his shoulders that he doesn’t have to tiptoe around them and can just do his crazy shit without them batting an eye.

Jimmy seeing The Horrors (the alternate evil supes) while Clark and Lois are still absoluley going at it mid-air open mouth sloppy style like 20ft away is so funny to me.

Also, I have a theory that Clark should able to understand the Kryptonian language, because the tech theoretically should be able to get inside Clark’s head.
But, Clark is TERRIFIED of where he came from, because he’s so worried of what that might mean for him. From his perspective, Clark’s people could be alien warmongers hell bent on conquering the universe. Clark doesn’t want to have to face the possibility that he could come from that. And so the Kryptonian tech can’t properly get inside his head to translate the words.
Clark has to want it. He has to want to understand. But, literally everything he finds out about where he’s from just makes him even more scared. And so far he has seen nothing to contradict the idea that the Kryptonians sent him here as a weapon.
Which is so like? Oh. Oh it’s so good. Because, we as viewers know that’s probably not what happened. Like. Clark is misinformed. He’s only seeing circumstantial evidence. He has no idea what his people/planet/culture were like. And that’s SO tragic. And it’s SO fun to watch, because that moment has to come, right?
The moment when Clark finally decides he wants to understand has to come. Superman has to know his own origins and we are getting to watch it all unfold, and what a moment of revelation will it be.

I love how the interviews were like "Rayla's new obsession is the coins and she will have to learn what's more important, Callum and the world or freeing her parents" for Rayla to choose the current mission right away in episode one and put the coins aside but then Callum inmediatly getting obsessed with them way more than her to the point of putting them in danger by looking for info just because she loves her very much, it's hilarious.
