As a follow up: Dobson, if you're going to cite Karl Popper, please do not put words into his mouth, or misconstrue his philosophy. Popper's paradox of tolerance DOES NOT equate an endorsement of violence.
If you want to use quotes as evidence:
A rationalist, as I use the word, is a man who attempts to reach decisions by argument and perhaps, in certain cases, by compromise, rather than by violence. He is a man who would rather be unsuccessful in convincing another man by argument than successful in crushing him by force, by intimidation and threats, or even by persuasive propaganda. -Karl Popper
Not only do I hate violence, but I firmly believe that the fight against it is not hopeless. -Karl Popper
And Finally, and most importantly:
In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. -Karl Popper
To spell it out plainly: The paradox of intolerance means UNLIMITED tolerance is wrong. Unlimited tolerance is pacifism; meaning no matter what, you never raise a hand, even in defense. Karl Popper, in his Paradox of Tolerance, was merely explaining why it makes sense to use violence if your political opponent ignores discourse, and only wishes to resort to violence. What he was NOT doing, was giving you the go-ahead to punch nazis simply because they are nazis. In order for you to fit his philosophy, the nazis you wish to punch MUST HAVE THROWN DISCUSSION OUT THE WINDOW. They MUST only resort to violence. If they have not done so, then you are NOT following Karl Popper’s philosophy.
Now by all means, if you still want to argue that punching nazis because they are nazis is the way to go, that’s your right. But please do not say “don’t blame me, blame Karl Popper” because you are not following his criteria.
You don't get it? The reason you're getting a lot of death threats in response to this comic (who are also calling you a fascist and Nazi) is because they are highlighting the logical outcome of your "violence to Nazis" philosophy. Let me spell it out: if violence against Nazis is okay, then it will not be long until someone calls you a Nazi just so they can punch you. The reasoning can he flimsy. Spoke out against a trans person? Fascist. Punch.
Might wanna blame Karl Popper then, because it’s his ideology that I agree with. Along with a number of other people…
“Should a tolerant society tolerate intolerance? The answer is NO. It’s a paradox, but unlimited tolerance can lead to the extinction of tolerance. When we extend tolerance to those who are openly intolerant, the tolerant ones end up being destroyed and tolerance with them. Any movement that preaches intolerance and persecution must be outside of the law. As paradoxical as it may seem, defending tolerance requires to not tolerate the intolerant.”—Karl Popper
“When you believe niceness disproves the presence of racism it’s easy to start believing bigotry is rare, and that the label racist should be applied only to mean-spirited, intentional acts of discrimination. The problem with this framework —besides being a gross misunderstanding of how racism operates in systems and structures enabled by nice people — is that it obligates me to be nice in return, rather than truthful. I am expected to come closer to the racists. Be nicer to them. Coddle them.”—Anonymous
“…When two opposite pints of view are expressed with equal intensity, the truth does not necessarily lie exactly halfway between them. It is possible for one side to be simply wrong.”—Richard Dawkins
“Once a government is committed to the principal of silencing the voice of opposition, it has only one way to go, and that is down the path of increasingly repressive measures, until it becomes a source of terror to all it’s citizens and creates a country where everyone lives in fear.”—Harry Truman
