Final Portfolio, 20 images.
Artist Statement: In taking these photographs the goal was to capture more private and personal moments. These photographs all show different times with people I love and moments to be appreciated in life. All these photos have a deep meaningful connection to me. I enjoy photographing moments where I am happy and want to remember. My photographs are taken in different locations. Some at home, family members' houses, friends' houses, in the car, etc. I like photographing in different locations to capture more and more special moments. In my images the main message I want to show is love and happiness. I hope my images make viewers feel and see each happy moment I'm living in. I love Corinne Day’s work and she gave me a lot of inspiration when taking my photos. Her images all show very real free life experiences similar to what I was trying to do. In one of the readings from class Picturing Us by Debroah Willis she spoke on how those images reminded her of her own family and allowed people to relate to that work. This is what I hope my images did for other people. My images varied from celebrations for my best friend's birthdays, trips visiting family and family photographs.

Corinne Day was a British photographer who brought a more documentary look to fashion imagery. At 16 she left school to travel the world. She got a job as a courier and through that she got into modeling. During a flight she met a photographer and followed through. She ended up traveling all over the world as a fashion model. At the time she had a boyfriend who was into film and photography. He taught her how to use a camera and she began taking photographs while traveling. Shortly later her friend suggested she give her photographs to Phil Baker. Later with many recommendations she began taking photos of fashion. Corinne had little experience with color so her photographs were taken in black and white. She brought six photographs to Phil and he published one. From there on her career began to take off and she came across more and more opportunities to publish her photographs.
Corrine was self taught. Her work influenced style and perception of photography in tbe early 1990s and still does. She often included autobiographical elements into her images. She was known for forming long and close relationships with many of her muses including Kate Moss, Rosemary Ferguson, George Clements, Georgina Cooper, Sarah Murray, Tanya Court, and Tara St Hill. This resulted in many candid and intimate portraits. Her first piece of work to be published was photpgrahs of Kate Moss titled “3rd summer of love”. This was published to the face magazine in 1990 and came to be known as grunge. This work grew to be an international style. Following this in 1993 she was asked to photograph Kate Moss and others for the March issue cover shoot and main fashion story. She was commissioned by Alexandra Shulman, a British Vogue editor. This led to her being commissioned for more fashion shoots and eventually led to the publication of her first book “Diary”. This was a personal visual record of her life and friends. The book shows poetic and honest photographs of young lives.
Two distinct bodies of work are “Diary” and “Tara, Gimpl Fils”. Her work in “Diary” was officially published in 2000. It was exhibited at The Photgraphers Gallery in London in that same year. This was her first solo exhibition and she became known for these images. Her bestfriend Tara was the main figure in Diary. It includes photographs of different events in Taras life from partying, sexual liasions, illness and motherhood. Tara shows different sides of herself in these photographs. Some feelings displayed are fresh, pretty, natural, sad, etc. They all give an understanding to Corinnes aesthic. “Tara, Gimpl Fils' ' is a very similar style to her work “Diary”. For these photographs her bestfriend Tara is the main figure used to photograph. These images portray a dark, very realistic life. All her images are very open and give off a strong message.
In these two bodies of work there are many similarties seen. Both of these use her bestfriend Tara as the main element of the photographs focusing on her different life events. They both show the realistic events of a young person. Her images all feel very free and expressive. Nothing seems staged or fake. To me these images all show the normal life of a young person. Almost all these images in both bodies of work are colorful.
Although these two bodies of work have a similar style there are some differences as well. “Tara, Gimpl Fils' ' photographs all especially focus on her bestfriend Tara. Almost every photo is about her indivually. On the other hand, her work in “Diary” has other focuses. You see pictures of the outdoors and other individuals, not just Tara. Her work in “Diary” can be seen as more joyful where as “Tara, Gimpl Fils' ' is more emotional and intimate. I enjoy how she can potray many diffrent messages through her work while keeping the style similar.

In this photograph I see what I believe would be a husband and wife. In this photo it looks as if the wife is yelling at her husband. She seems aggressive but the husband doesnt seem to be fazed or even paying attetion to her. I think the photographer took this photo to capture the reality of family. All familys have arguments and disagreements. This photo gives off the feelings of a tense touch moment.

The gallery I went to was Hauser and Wirth. They had three different exhibitions to view. The first one was by Christina Quarles called “In 24 days Tha Sun’ll Set at 7pm” , second was by Zoe Leonard “Experts from “Al Rio/ To the River”, and lasty Demented Words by Jenny Holzer. I enjoyed viewing all of these and my overall experience was great. They were all different types of photographs and art so it was nice to see the difference between the photographers' work. I decided to base my assignment on Zoe Leonards photographs. She is a New York based artist who balances rigorous conceptualism with a distinctly personal vision in her work, which merges photography, sculpture, and installation. Her photography specifically invites us to contemplate the role that the medium plays in constructing history, and to consider the roots of contemporary photographic culture. In her viewing there were more than 50 photographs. Her photographs were all in black and white. The dimensions of her photographs were 11.5 x 9 in.
The images I decided to focus on show a border patrol helicopter arranged in a 6-by-3 grid across two pages, so that the helicopter appears to hover menacingly in multiple.  Looking at these photos you see the different stages of the helicopter taking off and flying. In the Robert Hirsch reading he talks about how photographers use visual tools to express their stories and ideas. These can include light, color, shape, texture, etc. In these photographs you can see how she used these different visual tools for viewers to understand her work and grasp the idea behind it.
Zoe Leonard shows her journary across the border through her photographs. Her photographs are sparsh and direct. They have sharp outlines and eagles of fields, mountains, and bridges unfolding beneath big skies. She documents a high landscape with the border wall falling away. Her work is extremely important because it has a strong message encouraging the viewers to pay attention to observe this ongoing process.

The photographer I chose is a swiss artist Ruth Erdt. Her latest work I took this image from is called family affairs. This work is full of a combition of different images that all portray a different message. I love this image because it shows a woman who is soon to become a mother. Photographing the stages of life is such a beautiful thing. In this specific photo it is shown in black and white which I love. The woman in the photo has her hair covering her face hiding her identity but the rest of her body is exposed showing her pregant stomach.
I find her work so interesting because her photographs show more of a private life than what you would see on a day to day basis. She also uses her work to express her identity as a woman. She says “The chosen form of life of the community of destiny and the family of choice, in which I find myself to this day and which has / had a significant influence on my work, is questioned and examined in comparison to conventional representations of family and others. A central element is the terminology of artist, mother, daughter - or daughter, mother artist. This also refers to the position of the artist who becomes a mother, whose daughter becomes an artist and who in turn has a daughter and becomes a mother.”

Environmental Issues
Enviornmental concerns are one of the most crucial issues today. For my documentary project I chose to focus on the different enviornmental issues present today. By capturing these photos it really opened up my eyes to how much pollution we have whether it's on land, the ocean, or in the air. Although you may see many signs all over to show the importance of keeping our spaces clean this does not stop people from littering. People need to see the effects this has on not only us but also our environment. With using photography to show these issues the hope is to bring more awareness and expose the issues many people may not see.
