Alex Grigg’s work is stunning, its really clean but textured at the same time and its uses really nice fluid shapes. He spoke of his journey through school in Australia and studying 3D animation and how that helped him as well as going into detail about his turning point from focusing on specifically having a job and going into making art that’s for himself that can still be used for money or exposure like ‘loop de loop’

Viv Schwarz
It was really interesting to get Viv’s perspective because shes well versed in many different types of interactive art. She describes herself as an author and game designer focused on interactivity. This is shown in her interactive children’s books and installations.

Daniel Murtha and Alex Widdowson
I’ve not really dived in to the territory of animated documentary so it was interesting and overwhelming to hear from two people who are very well read up on the subject as well as being active practioners. Animated documentary draws my interest because I feel like humans have inherent worth and story behind them. It was eye opening to see the different types of animated documentaries (and documentaries in general) with its specific modes and differences between thesis, portrait and narrative.
Their festival seems like a hub of interesting artists and also people who want to tell stories or events. I think it was really helpful to have an example of a bad documentary juxtaposed with the many good examples as it really clarified the issues that can come from theses documentaries, which will become something to think about in my future career. It was interesting to hear about how artists and documentary makers have to grapple with the ethics of their production due to its subjective nature.
Questions asked by the audience were that of if they encouraged students to participate or apply for faff to which they answered yes. I think I would be interested in producing a small documentary and so I think I will keep this in mind for the coming years. Another was that of the production time or Widdowson’s documentary, Music and Clowns, where he took three months planning it and six months creating it. I’m happy they mentioned this because it reminds me that I would have to be serious and dedicated if I were to make a documentary.
Films shown:
Music and Clowns-Widdowsons, 2018
Slaves: An animated documentary-David Aronowitsch, Hanna Heilborn, 2012
Solos- Gabriella Marsh, 2019
Private Parts- Anna Ginsburg, 2018
O Hunter Heart- Carla Mackinnon, 2018
Tea and COnsent- Blue Seat Studios, 2019
Marcus Mcghee- Sam CHou, 2014
Feeling my way- Jonathan Hodgson, 1997

Peters work is kooky to say that least, he went over his life before being in art into his current career and his many inspirations. I really admire his ability to put work out that doesn’t fit the mould of what most people consider proper animations, I feel like this allows him to create new and interesting animations for himself.
I enjoyed watching exerts from some of his shorts films, I feel like they give real insight into his sense of humour as well as, again, his inspirations. I think it reminds me that part of being an artist is about indulging the things you like and what makes you want to create.
I think his work shows me that there are many ways to be an artist, that being showing your work as festivals or just creating while having another source of income. And his pushes to look for residencies and to go abroad resonate with me.

Jonny Hannah
Jonny Hannah spoke about his lengthy career as well as the artwork he makes primarily for himself. The diversity shown through his work from stamp collections, book covers and interiors and exhibitions opened my eyes to array of possibilities that can come from illustration especially one with as a distinctive style as Jonny Hannah’s. It was interesting. To get his take as a professional who seemed content with their work while still being able to explore and have fun.
His influences from music as well as the creation of dark town intrigued me as there seemed to be a lot of time and effort put into it as an accumulation of his personal interests into one project, taking the time make Darktown a place that both fits and seems to defy reality.

Charlotte Ager
Charlotte focused her presentation on the diversity of her work, speaking about both her hardships she has in her art, when it came to the Royal Drawing school and her successes. The issues she brought up were that of recording the things most people don’t get to see as well as drawing the same things over and over. She put an emphasis on recording colour and spending a long time in a place to get to know it and using art to translate big ideas and themes.
I enjoyed her talk and found it as a juxtaposition to Ollies talk with the stark differences in their styles. I appreciated her use of colour and shape and texture which all help convey mood and something I hope to replicate.

Ollie McDonalds Oulds
Ollie spoke about his work primarily focusing on the time after Kingston and the Royal Drawing school looking more towards his work in his career and residences as well as work he produced as studies. He spoke of how we, the audience, should question why we’re drawing the way we draw and how we draw. To him he answered this as drawing is a form of grounding himself and using it to almagalmate reality and imagination.
He touched on topics such as not overworking drawings and exploring with mediums even when working with the same image. He also mentioned the advantage of scaling your work appropriately.
I appreciated what he had to say and the focus he took on drawing as a currency with his work from Jamaica. Giving something back to the people he was working with and who were working for him as well as the importance a drawing can have to someone.

Laura Fitton
Fitton spoke about her experiences as a graduate of Norwich, not really knowing where her career was heading before doing a recidency at Tolpolski studio and going to the royal drawing school. Questions raised were mostly about finding jobs and the answer seemed to be that you should find jobs that can fit work you’ve already made as well as being aware of events going on around you so that you can have material that wants to be published, by newspapers or websites. She gave advice like setting your own briefs and prioritizing creativity. As someone who finds reportage intimidating seeing her evolution and tips helps to make me realise that you can draw anywhere and at anytime.

Joey Yu
Joey Yu’s presentation spanned over her University work and her current, knitting them together using statements of what she learnt through her experiences and how her perspective changed. She used a mixture of still pictures and moving images to help us piece together her work and her identity as an artist. Her works was presented mostly in a vague chronological order from her university work to her post uni work.
The questions brought forward from her presentation focused her her success post-degree and how she networked as well as how she gained jobs after the summer of her third year. It was hard for her to answer this question and I’m sure it’s multi-faceted. Another question was if she completed her work in one sitting, especially regarding her reportage or whether or not she got an idea of what she wanted and then completed when she had more time . Her answer was the latter, that though she tried to get as much information down as possible in one sitting that was not always possible due to the situation and that meant she had to complete the pieces at a later date.
My response to her presentation is highly positive and I am looking forward to implementing the collaborative aspects she mentioned. I really like her reportage work and the use of colour to set the mood and tone of the drawing.
