Viiking ventures and dambulla, a perfect fit
Sachiin Joshi-Dambulla Viiking captain Dasun Shanaka.
Tumblr media
Synergy across brands is the hallmark of any shrewd investor, and as such it was a no-brainer for Sachiin Joshi, owner of the Dambulla Viiking Lanka Premier League cricket franchise, to install his iconic Viiking moniker on the team.
“Well our group entity is called as Viiking Ventures, and the name Viiking was kept with after putting a lot of thought into it. Vikings were known to be noble warriors. When we got the opportunity to acquire the team it was called The Dambulla Lions. I thought why not rename it as Dambulla Viiking so as to create a great synergy and integration with the belief of the company,” explains Joshi.
While the name was changed in the name of synergy, the purchase of the franchise itself was one more in tune with Joshi’s passions. Despite spreading his talents far and wide, with labels such as entrepreneur, businessmen, actor and sports & fitness enthusiast, all fitting Joshi to a tee, sport is arguably where Joshi’s true passion lies.
He is already a player and co-owner of the Celebrity Cricket League team Telugu Warriors, while he is also the driving force behind the JMJ Sports Academy. Joshi also enjoys playing football and cricket in his spare time. As such, when the opportunity came to acquire and promote an LPL franchise, Joshi didn’t hesitate in seizing the opportunity.
“I have been a passionate cricketer myself and when this was offered to me, I immediately got excited as it gets you the potential to be in touch with your first love.
The LPL’s stated goals of promoting youth and hidden talent in Sri Lanka meshes well with Joshi’s other ventures such as the JMJ Sports Academy, which has provided a platform for many a sports enthusiasts to showcase their talent on the national stage.
“The idea is to promote the youth, their talent, and our shared love for the sport. We are here to contribute, to make things better,” says Joshi of the LPL. “Any league in the world is to promote the sport, and the talent, and the institution of cricket, hopefully through LPL we get to contribute to this movement. LPL has great potential to achieve that.”
That said, Joshi is keenly aware of the unique challenges posed by hosting a sporting tournament in the middle of a pandemic. Though, he firmly believes with the right drive and
execution the tournament and Viiking franchise have the potential to be among the few success stories of 2020.
“Overall, the game is viewed differently. The way franchises normally talk to people has changed as now, everything has moved to off-stadium viewership. The whole part where there's no crowd in the stadium. It affects everything from getting the morale of the players up, to sale and outreach of merchandise.
“But we will put our heart and soul in the game and all the hard work it needs to be a successful franchise. May the power be with us!”

32-year-old Sachiin Joshi is the new owner of Vijay Mallya's Kingfisher Villa
Tumblr media
Joshi, who is the owner of Goa's Planet Hollywood resort and Goa King's Pilsner Beer, has confirmed the deal, which is reported to be around Rs 73 crore
Thirty-two year old actor and entrepreneur Sachiin Joshi is the new owner of the well-known Kingfisher Villa in Goa, which was once owned by beleaguered industrialist Vijay Mallya. The property was taken over by a 17-member banking consortium led by State Bank of India in an effort to recover their dues of about Rs 9,000 crore from Mallya and his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines.
According to media reports that quote sources, Joshi is said to have paid Rs 73 crore for Kingfisher Villa, which is located in Candolim near Goa’s iconic tourist attraction of Fort Aguada. This is said to be a private deal between Joshi and the SBI-led consortium, after the latter failed to sell the property through an auction process which, incidentally, happened thrice. The consortium seems to have taken a haircut in the sale price given that they were looking to fetch above Rs 100 crore for the prized beach-front property.
On Saturday late afternoon, Joshi tweeted: “Now, the owner of the much discussed and celebrated #Kingfisher Villa. #KingfisherVilla #SachiinJoshi," while referring to an online report published by The Times of India. Joshi is the vice-chairman of JMJ Group which has diversified business interests spanning real estate to fitness centres, health spas, and hotels. He is also the owner of Goa King’s Pilsner Beer which he acquired in 2005 for Rs 90 crore. Besides this, Joshi has acted in several Telugu and Hindi movies.

‘Viiking Beverages leads the Indian beverage industry with our alcoholic and non-alcoholic brands’
Tumblr media
Viiking Ventures Pvt. Ltd., incorporated in 2008, is a major conglomerate with business verticals ranging in FMCG products, hospitality, beverages, realty & infrastructure, fitness, entertainment, etc. Viiking Beverages, the company’s beverage arm, established in 2009 by actor Sachiin Joshi, Chairman of Viiking Venture Pvt. Ltd., has a distinctive range of both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. The brands under Viiking Beverages are quite popular in India and are well received overseas too. Joshi conversed with Akshay Nayak in detail about Viiking Ventures’ and its beverage arm’s expansion plans in India and abroad.
Q. Being an actor by profession, what inspired you to enter into the hospitality industry?
Acting has always been my passion since I was a kid. However, business comes naturally to me. From the very beginning of my career, I had a keen eye on different aspects of a business like marketing, sales & distribution, company management, etc. I love to travel and see new places and stay in different types of properties. Hence, I decided that Viiking Ventures should also get into the hospitality segment of India.
Viiking Ventures’ hospitality vertical – Viiking Hospitality has some of the renowned brands such The Beatle Hotel– A 4-Star Business Hotel in Powai and also has successfully been able to get some of the international brands to India such as Playboy Lifestyle Ltd. and Planet Hollywood resorts.
Playboy Lifestyle Ltd. is Playboy’s sole license holder for all Playboy locations and formats in India. Planet Hollywood Resort, Goa is the second Planet Hollywood Resort in the World and is the first franchise to Goa.
Q. With setting the bar high for millennials by bringing Playboy Lifestyle & Planet Hollywood resorts in India, who is your target audience for your future expansion plans? What similar developments are you planning in the coming years?
We had signed a franchise agreement with Wyndham Hotel Group, which has a license agreement to franchise the Planet Hollywood brand in India. We also have an unconditional license to launch Playboy-branded clubs, cafes, lounges, pubs, beer gardens, hotels, signature events and merchandise in the country. For Playboy, we are targeting the urban metro audience whereas; the USP of Planet Hollywood is the ambience that we have created to attract national as well as international travellers. Going forward, we are looking at in process to open four more Plant Hollywood properties in India in the next one year.
We are delighted to have partnered with Dream Hotel Group and its dynamic team as this is another milestone to get an international brand in India. With Dream Hotel Group’s unprecedented growth and high-velocity expansion, we are looking to introduce new hotels and resorts to our existing portfolio in the coming years. India is among the fastest-growing economies and we are excited to take the hospitality industry in this country to new heights.
Q. Being so young and having entered the Alcobev industry early, what initial challenges & support did you come across to acquire and introduce various Alcobev brands in India?
Viiking Beverages is one of the leading beverage companies in India with a varied portfolio of alcoholic and non-alcoholic brands. Alcoholic brands that include Goa Kings Pilsner Beer, Goa Premium Beer, Go Kings Maxx – a lager strong beer, Royal Oak Premium Whiskey, SJJ XXX Vodka and XXX Vodka Mix whereas our non-alcoholic brands include XXX Energy Drink, Paani – Natural Mineral Water and Life – Packaged Drinking Water.
The liquor industry has been facing a huge amount of challenges because of the varied regulations and restrictions posed by the different states of the country. Another challenge that the industry faces is that of marketing the brand and products. There are steep regulations and restrictions when it comes to promoting alcoholic brands in India. When it comes to manufacturing of beer, the biggest challenge and an important factor to keep in mind is the quality of water available. Our beers are glycerin and gluten-free and are made using the highest quality of imported Hops. As for the other challenges involved is setting up a brewery as it includes government permissions, licenses and capital investment. The regulatory processes and policies also play an important role in setting up a new brewery, which varies from state-to-state in India. All these take up a lot of time, manpower, energy and investment before the business becomes operational.
Q. How flexible is the Indian Alcobev industry in India according to you? How are you looking to expand in this vertical in India?
A rapid increase in urban population is one of the key factors that is boosting and making the India alcohol market flexible. Traditionally, brown spirits have been targeted at the urban consumer. As such, increasing urban population coupled with factors such as increasing disposable income and growing preference for whiskies is expected to create avenues for growth of the alcohol market in India. As a result, the industry, I believe, will sharpen its focus on the premium part of the portfolio as they chase value rather than volume growth.
We already have a massive presence in India across more than 14 states currently and in the next few months we will be present pan India. For the next phase of expansion in India, we are looking at spreading our wings across the North Eastern Belt of India. We are also exporting our brands to the international markets of UAE, UK, Australia, Ivory Coast, Timor Leste and Nepal and are looking to expand our markets to the rest of the world as well.
Q. Which are the key markets & how are Tier-II & III cities serving as a market for Viiking Beverages? Which products are you trying to introduce in these regions?
The key markets vary from product to product. For example, the demand for our beers if high in Goa, Maharashtra and Delhi whereas with the launch of the new brandy we are looking to tap the southern parts of India as brandy is more favoured in that region. From an export point of view, we have been receiving very good response from Dubai, UK, USA and Australia.

Viiking Ventures acquires Kings Beer for Rs 90 cr
The 330 ml pint of the rebranded beer will be sold at Rs 85 in Maharashtra and Karnataka
Tumblr media
Kings Beer, the brand synonymous with trips to Goa, will now be available in Maharashtra and Karnataka, too. The brand has been acquired by Sachiin Joshi-led Viiking Ventures for Rs 90 crore from Impala Distillery and Brewery and will be rebranded Goa Kings.
The cost of acquisition includes the investment on expansion of the plant, as the beer can only be manufactured at the current location. Now that it will be available outside Goa as well, the output requirement will increase, hence the expansion.
With this, the company will have two beer brands in its portfolio – Goa Beer, the brand developed by Viiking Ventures, and Goa Kings, the acquired brand. “We will run the two brands separately. While Goa Kings will continue to be the mass brand, Goa Beer is the more premium brand. That way, we will be present at different niches within the beer segment,” says Joshi.
While its name will change from King’s Pilsner Beer to Goa Kings, the packaging will remain the same. However, the 330-ml pint of Kings is set to become dearer by almost 100 per cent with the proposed price at Rs 85 versus Rs 40-45 right now. Among other reasons, the hike is on account of excise duty, which will come in to play as the beer is distributed to places beyond its home state.
Apart from the Rs 90-crore that Viiking Ventures is shelling out on acquiring the brand and expanding the plant, it has also earmarked Rs 100 crore on marketing over the next three years.
“The challenge (and hence cost) in marketing alcohol in India is huge. We will be looking at events and below-the-line associations,” notes Joshi.
“We want to be present in the alcohol space in a big way. Over the next five years, we have to have our brands in the market for not only beer, but vodka, whiskey and wine as well. We’ve already done a soft launch for our brand of pre-mixed vodka – Triple X and will be following that with the launch of a premium Vodka brand Trip. In case of wine and whiskey, I’m open to acquiring foreign boutique brands,” he adds.
Viiking Ventures has interests across sectors such as hospitality, media and entertainment, health and fitness, realty and aviation. In the beverages segment, it already has Goa Beer and an energy drink named XXX Energy Drink along with the XXX Vodka Mix, which is positioned in competition with Bacardi Breezer. It also has two brands of packaged drinking water – Life and Pani, the latter positioned in the high-end segment.

Actor Sachiin Joshi Pays Rs 73 Cr To Be Proud Owner Of Vijay Mallya’s Famed ‘Kingfisher Villa’ In Goa
Vijay Mallya’s famed beach facing ‘Kingfisher Villa’ in Goa has finally found a new owner. After three failed auctions, the property was finally sold to actor-businessman Sachiin Joshi
Actor-producer Sachiin Joshi and actress Urvashi Sharma (who has changed her name to Raina Joshi).
If at first, you fail, try, try again. And that’s just what the lender's consortium led by State Bank of India (SBI) did. They kept tried to sell absconding liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s 'Kingfisher Villa’ in Goa but failed thrice. But they have managed to sell it at last.
The luxurious beachfront villa in Goa has been sold to Bollywood actor and businessman Sachiin Joshi, official sources said here on Saturday. The property is situated on the picturesque Candolim Beach, a tourist hotspot.
It had earlier failed to attract buyers on three auction attempts by SBI Caps - which had taken over the possession of the villa - ostensibly since the reserve price was between Rs 81-85 crore.
State Bank of India chief Arundhati Bhattacharya had confirmed the sale of the property but hadn’t revealed the identity of the buyer.

For the current sale, the reserve price was fixed at Rs 73 crore and the villa found a buyer in actor-cum-business baron, 33-year old Joshi, of the Mumbai-based Viiking Ventures Pvt. Ltd said an SBI official who requested anonymity.
The property sale comprises a part of the recoveries due to the Rs 9,000-crore plus amounts including loan and interest outstanding from Mallya who is currently living in the UK since over a year.
The Pune-based JMJ Group of Industries belongs to Jagdish Mohanlal Joshi while his son Sachiin owns the Viiking Ventures Pvt Ltd., headquartered in Andheri.

Vijay Mallya
It is a media & entertainment conglomerate which has varied business interests in beverages including mineral waters and Goa strong beer, media, spas, hospitality and healthcare.
Sachiin Joshi also owns Goa-based beer brand Kings Beer and has a minority stake in PB Lifestyle, an exclusive licence holder in India for Playboy Enterprises.
The 32-year-old entrepreneur made his acting debut in 2011 with 'Aazaan’, which he produced, and then produced another film, 'Jackpot’, in which he was cast Sunny Leone opposite him. He has also acted in 'Mumbai Mirror’ in 2013, it was produced by his wife.
The Kingfisher Villa, reportedly worth around Rs 100 crore, is built on a three-acre plot and comprises magnificent bedrooms, artificial ponds and private swimming pools, open-air dance floors, lush green gardens with over a score of expensive cars dotting the landscape.

I am an Indian first, an entrepreneur who takes care of a 1000 families next, I will not take armtwisters lightly: Sachiin J Joshi
MUMBAI: “I am an Indian first, an entrepreneur who takes care of over 1000 families next. It is time we stop thinking I’ and start thinking 'we’. As an Indian, I decided to help give meals to the poor and to give Beatle for the COVID19 patients. That is what every Indian should do for his nation.
Tumblr media
Every company has disgruntled employees and in our case, it is a handful who want to use media for arm-twisting tactics. The investigation of Thinktank dispute is on in Labour Court and we have full faith in the country’s judiciary. How can anyone tell me I cannot help COVID19 victims,” storms Sachiin Joshi as he confirms that the employees who are trying to arm-twist him using media will be immediately served legal notices.
“Are these people asking me not to feed the poor or not to give my hotel to the government for aiding patients misusing media? How dare they” he thunders.
Viiking Ventures had acquired a company Tugboat and rechristened it Thinktank.
The deal was that they would be self-sufficient in terms of revenue and we would give them the umbrella and infrastructural support. “But we were left straddled with their frauds and liabilities. There was dual employment, money issues etc. which they have accepted on social media as well Once the frauds are sorted, the liabilities will be too. We have details and letter from some employees accepting that they were doing dual jobs. As we were investigating, they (the ex-employees) tried using Mumbai Mirror to arm-twist us. Post that came to the lockdown. Now, they are trying to use scare tactics using Mid-Day while the matter is already in court. We are perfectly fine with legal recourse but trying to use media to malign our reputation will only ensure stringent action from our end,” he says.
“I am taking care of 1000 families, literally. Why are a handful not paid? There must surely be a reason. For a bunch of people whom we tried hard to keep on board to take care of a lossmaking company that had a chain of frauds, I can say this reputation tarnishing exercise could well be their best work. If only they had used this intelligence and unity to work, the company would have at least been at break-even.”

I Produced Jazbaa Only To Work With Irrfan Khan: Sachiin Joshi
Sachiin Joshi on the loss of Irfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor.
Tumblr media
Entrepreneur-actor Sachiin Joshi who is currently stranded in Dubai is unable to come to terms with the death of two acting stalwarts in two days.
“It’s like a nightmare for our film industry. Two of the best actors leaving us one after another. I’m a big fan of Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. Please note, I speak about them in the present tense. For me they will always be alive,” says Sachiin.
The full-time entrepreneur and part-time actor did get a chance to work with Irrfan. “I co-produced Jazbaa in 2015 only so I could get to work with Irrfan. We made sure it was one of his slickest films ever, as he was always associated with the more realistic kind of cinema. We designed Jazbaa as a fast-paced glamorous thriller, and for a change, Irrfan played a sophisticated investigative officer with the very beautiful and glamorous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as his co-star.”
Sachiin feels an actor like Irrfan need not be pigeon-holed. “He could play raw or slick, rich or poor. He was illimitably versatile and it was a privilege to interact with him. He was one of the most well-informed and intelligent actors I’ve known. And we spoke on many subjects. His interests stretched far beyond cinema.”
As for Rishi Kapoor, Sachiin was thinking of approaching him for a film. “But fate had other plans. I really wanted to work with Rishiji. He was an actor who brings alive even the ‘deadest’ of scripts. A rarity. Why did we have to lose two such phenomenal actors within two days?”

Sachiin Joshi Flexes His Muscles for Animals
Actor, Telugu Warriors owner and JMJ Group executive Sachiin Joshi is expanding his portfolio yet again, but this time he’s spreading the message that being vegetarian is good for your health and for animals.
Tumblr media
Sachiin sizzled with onscreen partner and PETA friend Sunny Leone in the movie Jackpot and will soon star in Nee Jathaga Nenundali, and now he’s wowing fans again by starring in an eye-catching new PETA ad. Celebrity and fashion photographer Prasad Naik shot the young tycoon, who was styled by Rocky S.
With a packed schedule that puts demands on both his mind and his body, Sachiin knows that being healthy is a top priority. That’s why the life-long vegetarian is encouraging fans to ditch meat from their plates. As Sachiin’s muscles prove, plant foods provide all the energy, protein, vitamins and minerals that we need to be healthy and stronge.
“I am happy to be a vegetarian. I have never had meat of any kind or flesh in any way”, says Joshi. “I think with vegetarian[ism], you can have a healthy diet and you can have a good lifestyle.”
Sachiin lives by the mantra “Follow your heart“, which is why he doesn’t support the violent killing of billions of animals for food each year. “Killing animals psychologically hurts me. Killing animals for your food is not a good idea. And I do not support it.”
Not only does ditching meat save countless animals’ lives, it also helps the environment, since raising animals for food wastes resources and causes water pollution, greenhouse-gas emissions and deforestation.

Actor-Entrepreneur Sachiin J Joshi’s act of largesse during coronavirus crisis
Celebrities are pitching in their might in the Great Big Fight. Like the Tatas and Ambanis Viiking Group’s CMD, and acclaimed actor-entrepreneur Sachiin J Joshi is also stepping up and doing his bit.
Sachiin J Joshi, who is also the driving force behind the Big Brother Foundation, has offered Beatle Hotel in Powai to the BMC to quarantine COVID-19 patients coming from abroad! Beatle Hotel is a 36-room boutique hotel located in the heart of Powai in the suburbs of Mumbai.
When contacted Sachiin J Joshi, who is stranded in Dubai, said, “Mumbai is a densely populated city, there are not enough hospitals and beds to take measures to save our city. When the BMC approached us for help, we voluntarily agreed to help.”
The actor-entrepreneur, who was last seen in Amavas opposite Nargis Fakhri and Mona Singh, has also starred in numerous films including his Bollywood debut with Aazaan, Jackpot opposite Sunny Leone, Veerappan opposite Lisa Ray and Usha Jadhav among others films.
“We’ve converted our hotel with the BMC’s help into a quarantine facility for travellers,” he added.
The BMC has taken precautionary measures seriously, has issued guidelines for quarantine including specialist doctors and nurses assigned for a regular check-up. “The entire building and rooms get sanitized regularly with staff equipped with the necessary gear.”
Considering it a citizen’s duty to help fight the virus, Sachiin believes that it is not just Mumbai or Maharashtra. It is not just India as well. It is the Coronavirus against the world. Keeping the government workers and the poor people in mind, his Big Brother Foundation has been distributing food boxes to the people in need. The foundation will do so till the end of the quarantine period!
