The way back to you
pairing: myung jaehyun x reader
genre: fluff, a little of angst
n/a: so here it issss!!! it turned out pretty long hshahakak. i hope u like ittt!!! 💕💕
"I'm telling you that school's about to be the end of me, and all you can think of is inviting me to a damn study group?!" Leehan groaned at his best friend's proposal "The afternoon is for resting, right Yn?"
"Yeah, but if you used it to study a bit it wouldn't be a big deal" you opined as you sipped some of your juice. "Try not to fail so many this term, come on."
"You don't understand" he complained, offended "I don't want to be your friend any more".
"As you wish" replied Taesan dryly.
"Well, better not" he rectified himself, grabbing your arm.
"Anyways, see you later, little guys" you said goodbye, ruffling both boys' hair.
"Just because you're a year older than us doesn't make you taller, you know" Leehan defended.
"Shut up, I'm five foot seven, I'm the tallest in my class" you pleaded, making a seven with your hands.
"Yeah, whatever you say" and Taesan pushed you into your class.
As you walked in, your eyes darted to your seat, which was occupied by someone else resting their head on the window. You thought about saying something to him, but let it pass. It was the first day of term and they would still have to change places.
"Yn!" you heard your name being shouted "Why the hell haven't I seen your face all holiday?" exclaimed one of your friends.
"You know my law" you announced, responding to your friend's hug "Holidays are for resting and school is for suffering"
"Well, you could have at least not left me and the rest of us stranded" and when you were about to speak, she interrupted you "And don't tell me it's for your health" then, the girl walked towards a free seat.
When the class started, the first thing the teacher did was to change the seats.
Your friend was placed next to a short-haired girl and you next to the boy who had stolen your seat.
"Hello" you greeted him "I'm Yn".
"Hi" he replied with a shy, but at the same time big, smile "I'm Myung Jaehyun" Myung Jaehyun. For several seconds, his name kept repeating over and over in your head. It was him. There he was, after so long.
For a while, his eyes only looked at you I amusement.
"No way... It's really you?" he whispered, his eyes wide as saucers "You remember me, don't you? Don't you?" he exclaimed, excited.
"Of course I remember you, Jaehyun. How could I forget you?" you said with a smile identical to his. "What are you doing here... How come...?"
"You two in the back, be quiet!" a teacher shouted at you. You both fell silent, giggling under your breath.
The class soon began. It was merely introductory: the teacher introduced himself, talked about what he was going to teach during the course, and then had you introduce yourself to the class. You were rather absent for the whole hour, exchanging glances with your deskmate from time to time, until it was time for him to introduce himself.
"Hello, my name is Myung Jaehyun. I'm new to Seoul and my hobbies are sports, especially football. I also like dogs very much." His presentation was brief, but it reminded you of some of the childhood moments you spent with him.
......
"Jae, your mom says let's go home!" you shouted to him from the side of the small football field in your village, where he played with other children. You never liked football, so you usually stayed on the side playing basketball.
"But it's still too early!" he protested, although he was walking towards you. "I'll race you to my house, whoever wins has to buy the other a lemon candy tomorrow" he bet, before running off. You didn't take long to follow him either, but Jaehyun was always faster.
"Someday I'll beat you.... Someday" you swore, panting, leaning against the door of your house.
"Pinky promise?" he asked, showing his little finger.
"Pinky promise" you assured.
......
After school was over, you rushed to the bathroom. When you came back, you found Jaehyun at the door, talking to your two friends.
"Speaking of the devil..." whispered Taesan, waving to you. You walked over to where everyone was standing.
"We were talking about going out this afternoon, have you already started the academy, Yn?" Leehan questioned.
"I'm starting today, but I'm leaving earlier. I think around six" you reported, walking into class to get your backpack.
"So... How about we meet at the football field near your academy?" suggested Leehan, in a somewhat excited tone. If one thing was clear to you from so many years of friendship, it was that the boy loved meeting new people and befriending them, so you weren't opposed to the idea, in fact, you were even looking forward to it.
"Fine by me" said Taesan, scrolling down his phone.
"If you want to..." you commented, as you didn't really care what they were going to do. What you wanted was to be with Jaehyun, to know why he was here, what had become of his life.
Suddenly, you all looked at the young boy, who seemed lost in thought.
"Aren't you going to say anything?" asked Leehan, snapping his fingers in your friend's face.
"Me? Eh... Sure! Anywhere's fine. I'm not quite settled yet, you know..." he explained, scratching the back of his neck, smiling. Oh, that smile.
"In that case, have Yn give you the address of his academy and the two of you go there together, right?" proposed Taesan, with a small sideways smile. "After all, the two of you already knew each other before."
Jaehyun and you looked at each other, small smiles escaping your mouths. "Sure" you said.
......
"If I don't try harder this year, I'm going to fail everything!" your friend complained, leaning her head on your shoulder. How come all your friends were failing?
"It's the last year, what can you do..." you comforted her, patting her head. In the distance, you saw someone look sideways, probably looking for you.
"Oh, here you are!" he exclaimed when he saw you. It was Jaehyun, who came running up to your side as you waved goodbye to your friend.
"Shall we go?" you proposed, trying to hide your excitement. He nodded his head, signalling for you to pass in front of him.
On the way you talked about everything. You found out that he was in Seoul because his father had been promoted in his job, which made you very happy, as you remembered that, when you still lived in the village, his family had a hard time making ends meet.
When you arrived at the field, you saw your friend's mouth drop open in amazement. Although it wasn't the biggest, it was much bigger than the one in your village.
"Are you telling me this is a public facility?" he asked, surprised, hesitating whether or not to enter.
"If it were private, they'd all be there?" you pointed to your two friends and your brother, who must have joined them at some point "Come on in" you offered, giving him a little push in the back.
From afar, you watched as Leehan waved his arm to greet Jaehyun. He walked over to them, who started playing on a patch of field, while you were in the bleachers, until you decided to go for a basketball. You put on your headphones and started practising your shots, as you had a tournament coming up and it wouldn't hurt to practise.
Suddenly, you noticed someone hugging you from behind. Startled, you looked back at Jaehyun, who had stolen your headphones. They were playing 'Will you kiss me' by Playful kiss.
"Do you still listen to this song" questioned the boy grabbing the ball that you had dropped from the scare. " Wanna play?" he offered.
"And the rest of them?" you nodded your head towards where they were.
"Never mind, they're resting" he clarified, passing you the ball.
......
You were humming your favourite Playful Kiss song while playing basketball, when your ball escaped and hit the light blue radio resting on the floor.
"There you are!" shouted a small Jaehyun in the distance. You turned to him, ball in hand. "Are you done playing, Jae?" confused, you asked. Suddenly, the boy grabbed you from behind to take the ball, starting to bounce it.
"Wanna play?" he offered, passing you the ball. "Whoever loses has to buy the other one a lemon candy."
Getting carried away by the competitiveness, you played against him, although he ended up winning.
"Someday I'll beat you" you vowed, taking your ball back.
"Pinky promise?
"Pinky promise" you assured, interlocking both fingers.
......
It had been several days since Jaehyun's arrival in the city and you couldn't be happier. You were together almost every day with the others. But there was something that didn't quite fit.
Every time he gave you a smile, yours came out without a thought. His unintentional touches on your hand when you walked side by side made your cheeks turn pink. When he opened a door for you or when he shared his food with you, your stomach seemed to want to escape from inside you.
And you didn't want to accept what you felt. You didn't want to ruin what had just re-formed between the two of you over a useless feeling. That's why you tried to let it go, until that day came.
It was a hot summer afternoon and the amount of clouds in the sky ensured a storm, yet your group of friends decided to go out and play on the football field for a while.
This time, Jaehyun played basketball with you all afternoon, which was not beneficial to your plan to end your apparent feelings for him.
Suddenly, you noticed a drop fall on your face. Then another, another, another... And a great storm formed under your heads.
Taesan, Leehan and Sunho took shelter under the bleachers and, as you were about to follow them, Jaehyun grabbed your arm and pulled you, making you run after him unconsciously.
Both your bodies were covered in water from head to toe, but it didn't seem to matter. Holding hands, you and your friend ran aimlessly through the city, your laughter the only thing that could be heard. Suddenly, Jaehyun stops.
"I'll race you, whoever wins has to buy the other a lemon candy," he said, as if you had suddenly gone back in time. Then he ran off. But this time something different happened. You won.
"You kept your promise, I guess I'll have to buy it this time," sighed Jaehyun, feigning annoyance.
When he gave it to you, you quickly popped it in your mouth. "It tastes like victory" you thought.
"There's one thing I've always wondered," you began, "why do you like lemon candy so much?" he smirked.
"Because they remind me of you" you looked at him confused "They produce a bitter sensation at first, but then it's so sweet, they're refreshing and, most importantly, I love them" He looked straight into your eyes, then, he and directed his gaze to your lips, then to your eyes again.
He gently placed the palm of his hand on your cheek, still wet from the rain. Slowly he brought his face closer to yours, when an unexpected gust of wind blew all your hair into your face. He let out a little chuckle, as you felt the ground fall away from you in embarrassment.
"Wait... Let me just..." He whispered as he put your hair back in place "We're good now, can I?" you just nodded, letting yourself get caught up in the moment. At that time your plan was a thousand miles away.
His lips were soft and savoured the taste of the candy you had just eaten. One of his hands was still on your cheek while the other rested loosely on your waist. Your hand went up to the nape of his neck, playing with his hair; the other was on his chest.
As soon as you parted, Jaehyun hid his head in the crook of your neck, hugging you while smelling your scent, which was more wet than anything else.
"I love you so much, you can't imagine how this years without you have been" he said, keeping his head in the same place. You started rubbing his back up and down.
"I love you too, Jae" you said that in a really soft whisper "I mean it, I don't think I can ever let you go again" you lifted his face with both your hands, his watery eyes looked at you as if he could see your soul, and in a way he did. You ran your hand through his hair, uncovering his forehead to leave one more peck there. He coughed, suddenly feeling nervous, cheeks on fire.
"Well... Don't you think the rest of them are looking for us?" he asked, scratching the back of his neck.
"Yeah,I think so, come on" you ordered, taking his hand as you laughed.

The way back to you
pairing: myung jaehyun x reader
genre: angst, fluff, comfort
about: when you were little you had to move to seoul because of your father, leaving behind your best friend. that is until he suddenly comes back, bringing with him a strange feeling that slowly grows inside of you. and maybe him too?
n/a: hiii, this is my first post here, i really hope you like it!!!!
EPILOGUE; before you
You remembered perfectly the day you moved to Seoul. Your father had just been fired from his job, so you had to move in with your grandmother, leaving your only friend behind. For many months, you felt lost and out of place, until one day you went to play in the park. You were used to not being approached by many people, as you had practically no friends in your new town, but that day two children took you by surprise when you were about to go on the slide. One boy was blocking the stairs to the slide while the other was trying to climb up.
"That's not fair!" one of them retorted "How do you want me to guess your password, silly?"
"By guessing it" the other replied with a mischievous grin"
"Excuse me... Can I come up?" you asked timidly, while poking little holes in the ground with your feet.
"Password first" the boy indicated, holding up his index finger.
"Leehan!" a girl's voice shouted in the distance "Let them up or I'll call your mother" hearing that threat from his nanny, the boy quickly stepped aside and let them pass.
"You're a bore!" he shouted at her, kicking at the ground "My name is Leehan" the little kid introduced himself to you as if it nothing had happened before "He is Taesan" the aforementioned shyly waved his hand in greeting "And you are..."
"Yn" you said in a low voice.
"Well, from now on we are friends" agreed the small, slightly long-haired boy. Suddenly, you heard someone shouting your name.
"Yn!" your brother called "It's time to go home, come on!"
The next day, you realised that Leehan and Taesan were in the class next to yours, so you would be together for quite some time. And so your practically inseparable group of friends was formed.
......
But then, he came along, like a storm on a hot summer day. Something you expect but,at the same time, don't see coming.

I LOOOOOOVE THISSS <3333
knocking on heaven’s (your) door
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairing: leehan x gn!reader genre: fluff, some angst, neighbours!au, highschool!au, childhood friends to lovers, mutual pining, leehan is so whipped it hurts word count: 3.5k
summary: leehan has been by your side your entire life. but when you start seeing him in a different light, will your friendship with him still stay the same?
bonus: in leehan’s eyes
Tumblr media
Leehan has always been your constant.
From the moment you showed up to his neighbourhood at six years old knowing absolutely no one other than your parents, he was the one person who accompanied and played with you even though you knew he clearly had other preferences for games. You heard him grumbling to his mother sometimes when he thought you couldn’t hear them, but you were always silently grateful that he never stopped playing with you.
When middle school came around, you were worried about what was going to happen to your friendship with Leehan. See, Leehan was an extremely extroverted and easygoing person, who just seemed to get along with everyone without much difficulty. You, however, had to try a little harder to make friends with people due to your shyness. Leehan had made so many new friends just from the first day of middle school, and you found yourself hanging out with him less and less during school as the weeks went by, making you grow increasingly worried that he would abandon you for someone “cooler”.
“Han, you know you don’t always have to walk home with me, right?” you asked one day as the both of you were walking home from school. Although Leehan hung out with you less while you were in school, he’d always wait for you after school to go home together, and you didn’t know what to make of it. Were the both of you still friends? Or just people who lived next to each other?
“What do you mean? We’re literally neighbours,” Leehan raised an eyebrow in confusion.
“Like, you can always go hang out with your friends, I know they usually hang out after school. I can always go home by myself, you know.” you explained, turning to look at his reaction.
Leehan suddenly stopped, and you didn't realise until you were quite a few steps ahead of him. Jogging back to stand in front of him, your heart beat faster in anticipation (or dread?) at his reply.
“y/n,” he started, looking into your eyes with so much intensity you found yourself looking down at your feet to avoid eye contact instead, “you’re my best friend. Those people you’re talking about don’t know me better than you do, or longer than you have, so why bother?”
You looked up to face him. You didn't know why, but the title of 'best friend' somehow warmed your heart and made you feel sick to your stomach both at the same time. “I mean, you could always choose to hang out with them, let them get to know you better, you know?”
“You’re so silly. I’m not bailing on our daily routine just to hang out with mere acquaintances, y/n. Let’s go home now, yeah? I’m starving,” Leehan let out a laugh so melodic your breath hitched for a second, and reached out to ruffle your hair before turning to continue walking down the street like nothing had happened.
You remained rooted to the ground, mind reeling. Why was your heart beating faster than usual?
“Hey, stupid! Are you coming or not?” Leehan shouts from a distance away, snapping you out of your trance.
“I am, I am!” you shouted in reply, running after him.
Whatever this was, you were glad Leehan was still by your side.
Tumblr media
“Are you thinking about loverboy again?” an exasperated sigh snaps you out of your daze, and you look up to see Hikaru looking at you with her eyebrow raised, Jungwon sitting beside her looking unbothered.
“I wasn’t, and who said anything about him being loverboy?” you reply defensively, sitting up to face your friends. Leehan wasn’t the only one expanding his social circle as the two of you grew older, as you found yourself becoming fast friends with Jungwon and Hikaru during middle school, your friendship lasting all the way to high school now.
“So you were thinking about Leehan,” Hikaru giggles with the kind of satisfaction someone would get after finally getting a math question right after an hour, shaking Jungwon’s shoulders in delight. "you guys are so in love it physically pains me to watch."
"I was not thinking about Leehan! And we are not in love, Hika, don't say that so loudly!" you shush Hikaru desperately, looking to Jungwon for help.
Jungwon simply shrugs, deadpanning, "She's right. You guys are stupidly in love with each other it makes me want to die."
"We aren't! I am not in love with him, and he is not in love with me. We've been neighbours for nearly our entire lives. We’ve seen each other in our awkward phases. There's no way he'd ever be interested in me in that way, ever." you defend yourself passionately, unsure why this topic is even eliciting such a huge reaction from you. The truth is, you have thought about being in a relationship with Leehan, but he seemed so out of your league that you gave up on it early.
"Oh, yeah? Then tell me why he's looking over at you with heart eyes right now." Hikaru glances behind you nonchalantly, and you turn around only to lock eyes with Leehan from across the cafeteria, sitting with five other guys, one of whom you recognise to be Taesan from your Calculus class.
Leehan brightens visibly upon meeting eyes with you, waving animatedly at you like he was seeing you for the first time in a long time. Endeared, you beam back at him before turning back to see both Hikaru and Jungwon looking at you with an 'I-told-you-so' face.
You sigh. "He's just friendly like that, okay? He would have done the same to any other friend of his."
"Who would've?" an ever-familiar voice pipes up, and you jump in shock at the sound as Leehan slides into the seat beside you, greeting your friends as he settles down. You don’t miss the hint of bitterness laced in his voice, but you choose to ignore it in case you were being delusional.
“You scared me, Han! What are you doing here, anyway?” you grumble, trying your best not to make eye contact with Leehan.
“Aw, can’t I pay a visit to my favourite person and their friends just because? Your conversation seemed more interesting than whatever the guys were talking about, anyway,” Leehan teases, his signature smile creeping up his face. You can’t help but stare at him in awe, and Hikaru definitely notices.
“Oh, really?” Hikaru pipes up, raising her eyebrows at you. “What were they talking about?”
“Jaehyun has been trying really hard to set me up with someone, and it was getting annoying, so I figured whatever you guys were talking about had to be more interesting than the pure torture I’d have to go through if I stayed there,” Leehan explains, looking at you the entire time to gauge your reaction. “So, who were you guys talking about before I came here?”
“trying really hard to set me up with someone” you turn over the words over and over again in your head. Of course someone as handsome as him would be looking for love, and of course it wouldn’t be with you. His appearance had completely changed when highschool started, his facial features more defined and his build becoming larger in general. And his nose, his nose. You would spend hours looking at it if you could, that was just how beautiful he was. And his eyes, they always seemed to light up the entire world everytime he smiled, it’s no wonder that he suddenly became so popular in highschool, girls and boys flocking to him like he was free real estate. Why, then, would he ever be interested in a nobody like you?
“y/n? y/n!” you snap out of your stupor to see Jungwon snapping his fingers in front of you, “What were you thinking about? It’s like you went to another dimension or something!”
You glance to your left and lock eyes with Leehan, who is looking at you with such a worried gaze in his eyes one would think something serious happened to you. The thought of Leehan going on a date with someone else creeps up your throat again, and you start to feel suffocated.
“I- I’m sorry, I have to go, I just remembered that I have a Calculus assignment due in thirty minutes! I’m really sorry guys, I’ll see you!” you make up a flimsy excuse hurriedly, standing up and bolting out of the cafeteria before you break down in front of everyone.
“Wait! y/n, is everything okay?” Leehan asks from behind you, but you’re too upset to bother, missing the way he watches you leave with a pained expression.
Tumblr media
You don’t talk to Leehan for the rest of the day.
Well, you didn’t exactly have the opportunity to, considering that you had no shared classes with him that day.
Which is why you had quite the shock walking out of your Calculus class with Taesan only to see Leehan waiting for you by the door, your classmates walking by nonchalantly like it was a regular occurence (well, it was, but you just didn’t expect him to be waiting for you considering what happened earlier).
“I’ll see you tomorrow, y/n! Have fun,” Taesan greets, nodding at Leehan on his way out of school.
“Hi,” Leehan steps forward, shooting you his signature smile, and you forget how to breathe momentarily. “are you okay? You seemed a bit… out of it, earlier.”
The way his eyes soften as he speaks has your heart threatening to jump right out of your chest. You’ve been friends forever. Why does he have this effect on you?
“y/n! There it is again,” Leehan chuckles for a bit, before turning serious, “what’s wrong? You know you can tell me anything, right?”
“It’s- it’s nothing serious, Han. I’m just tired from school and all the exams coming up. Let’s just go home, hm?” You don’t give him the chance to call out your avoidance, walking ahead of him instead.
The walk home is silent, an unusual occurence considering that the usual routine was one filled with laughter and endless chatter all the way back home. You can tell that something’s on Leehan’s mind, but you decide not to probe further and wait for him to talk instead.
"So," Leehan starts as the both of you turn and walk down the street you both live in, "who were you guys talking about at lunch earlier? Do you like someone?"
"We were just talking about some friend of mine, Han, it wasn't anything important. What about you? How's the whole matchmaking thing going?" you change the topic, looking everywhere but in Leehan's direction.
Leehan hesitates. "I... actually wanted to talk to you about this. I'm supposed to go on a date with someone they picked out for me tomorrow, and I wanted to ask whether you'd be okay with it."
You stop in your tracks abruptly, and Leehan continues walking at first, then realises your absence and jogs back to you. You feel a sense of deja vu at the scene unfolding in front of you.
Your heart feels like it'd been shattered against the wall. You break out into a small smile to mask your disappointment. "Han, why do you have to ask me for permission? You're your own person. You can do whatever you want."
Leehan’s shakes his head, eyes softening. He looks like he’s withholding something. “I just thought I should ask you first, since… since we’re supposed to go home together. If I go on that date, I’ll be bailing on our routine.”
You try your hardest to let out a chuckle that doesn’t sound too fake, hoping Leehan doesn’t pick up on it. He doesn’t say anything, and you take it as a sign to continue. “Hannie, why am I standing in the way of you and a potential partner? Go.”
Don’t go, you so badly want to say, but restrain yourself. Why should he sacrifice his love life for someone like you? Compared to him, whose very existence brings so much joy to so many people’s lives, you’re… nothing.
Leehan looks at you with what you make out to be a longing look on his face, like he’s expecting you to say more.
“But y/n, we’ve never not gone home from school together, ever. Even on days where our schedule didn’t line up, we’d wait for each other. If I go on this date, it’d be the first time our routine is broken,” Leehan strangely sounds like he’s pleading with you.
“Are you trying to get me to say no? You can do whatever you want, Han, but I think this is a good opportunity.” you retort, your words laced with a hint of bitterness that you don’t bother masking.
“Who knows if this would be the beginning of the end of our routine if I go? y/n, is this not important to you? This is one of the only moments I get to spend time with you, one-on-one, and I cherish it. A lot. But it looks like it doesn’t go both ways,” Leehan’s brows furrow together as he gets agitated by the second.
You don’t know why you’re being so avoidant, and the next few words come out of your mouth before you can react to stop them, “You think I don’t cherish this? Why are you so worked up about this, anyway? It’s not like we’re dating or anything-”
“And that’s the problem!” Leehan interrupts, raising his voice a little in frustration. He’s never gotten frustrated with you before, and you look on the situation with worry.
“Every second that passes whenever I’m with you pains me more than you can believe because I know my feelings are unrequited. Do you know how hard it is to be standing here in front of you and not be able to reach out and hold you anytime I want, not be able to call you mine, and not be able to put a label on our relationship instead of this infuriating ‘best-friendship’? I was hoping you’d stop me from going on that date, y/n. But you didn’t. I guess that’s enough evidence for how stupid I am to have fallen so, so deeply in love with you.
But no matter how hard I try, I can’t stop. I’ve loved you ever since we were dumb six-year-olds playing house in your front yard, and I still love you now.”
You release a breath you didn’t know you were holding in. Leehan is looking at you with such an intense gaze in his eyes you feel small.
Say something! Your heart screams, but your brain refuses to listen.
Leehan scoffs at your silence and looks down at his feet. “Goodbye, y/n.”
At that, he turns around and walks towards his house, and you’re just now realising that you’d already reached your front porch.
You stay rooted to the ground as you watch his slumped figure enter his house, internally screaming for you to say something while nothing comes out of your mouth.
Tumblr media
Leehan isn’t at his usual spot outside your Calculus class the next day, and you can’t hide your disappointment.
Earlier this morning, you were turned away by Leehan’s lovely mom as she told you apologetically that Leehan had already left for school by the time you knocked on his door, and he wasn’t with his group of friends at his usual spot at the cafeteria today. Even Hikaru and Jungwon noticed the change in your behaviour, opting to rub your back comfortingly and say nothing.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Taesan offers, picking up on your sorry state. “There’s a new cafe that recently opened nearby, we could go there and talk.”
And that’s how you end up sitting across from Taesan in the newly-opened cafe a few blocks away from school, with cups of iced matcha lattes in front of you.
Taesan listens attentively as you recount what happened yesterday, though he seems unfazed, like he’d heard about the situation beforehand.
You pause. “Did he tell you this already?”
“Well, yeah. I just wanted to get your perspective on the whole situation,” Taesan explains, shrugging. “So, how do you feel about him?”
You sigh. You’d had time to think it over yesterday, but your feelings are still as confusing as ever.
“I don’t want to lose him.” you state. “He’s been there for me my entire life, and I have been there for him, too. I just, I can’t imagine having to live on without having him by my side. To be honest, I can’t even imagine sitting here on a date with some other person, because somehow, I always thought-”
Your eyes widen. Taesan smiles.
“God, I’m so stupid. It’s probably too late, right? I messed up so bad, Taesan.” you chastise yourself, burying your face in your hands.
“No, y/n. That guy would probably wait multiple lifetimes for you if he had to.” Taesan smiles reassuringly.
You look up at him, slightly unconvinced.
“As much as he was upset at you yesterday, did you really think he was going to leave you here alone? He asked me to accompany you today,” Taesan explains, “well, that is not to say that I wouldn’t have hung out with you if he didn’t ask, y/n, I think you’re pretty cool. I guess there just weren’t really many opportunities, since your time after school has always been reserved for each other.”

You’ve never run back home faster than you just did before.
After Taesan’s revelation, you got up abruptly, thanked him, and bolted out of the cafe and all the way to Leehan’s front porch. Bracing yourself, you knock on his door. You can only hope he’s home this time.
You hear some shuffling from inside the house, and the door opens soon after. You come face to face with Leehan, clad in a dark blue hoodie and a pair of sweatpants that just made him look so domestic.
“Hey,” you start, albeit a little awkwardly, “the date ended so fast?”
“I didn’t go on that date, y/n.” Leehan states in a matter-of-fact tone. Oh, you think, chastising yourself internally.
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry.”
The both of you apologise at the same time. After a beat of silence, you and Leehan break out into a fit of giggles, and for a moment, you think everything is fine again. Just like before this all happened.
“Leehan, I wanted to apologise for my behaviour yesterday. Our daily routines mean everything to me, and not having you walking beside me today showed me that.”
Leehan opens his mouth to say something, and you speak first before he does.
“I’m in love with you, Leehan, I’m sorry it took me so long, but I’m so in love with you, I can’t bear to imagine what it would be like if you’re not going to be by my side anymore-”
“It’s Han,” Leehan interrupts, not saying anything else.
“Huh?”
“You’ve always called me Han,” Leehan’s eyes soften as he looks at you so fondly you think your heart is going to explode, “I’m sorry I said being in love with you was stupid, because it isn’t. I’m in love with you too, y/n. What took you so long?”
Leehan slowly leans closer until your noses touch, and his eyes wander from your lips to your eyes. You give him a small nod.
You don’t know who initiates it, but soon his lips are on yours, and you feel like your whole body is being lit on fire. Leehan’s lips felt like home, and you’re left wondering what really took you so long as you smile into the kiss, wrapping your arms around his neck.
You pull away for breath and Leehan’s lips chases after yours, eliciting giggles from you. You lean forward to give him a peck on the lips.
“Hi,” you beam at Leehan. “I’m in love with you.”
“Hi,” Leehan looks so in love you think you might die. “I’m in love with you, too.”

“Are you staring at loverboy again? Come on, y/n, do something already!” Hikaru sighs in exasperation, looking on the whole situation with frustration.
Jungwon perks up. “Hey, he’s coming over.”
“Hey, guys, what are you talking about?” Leehan comes to sit beside you, wrapping an arm around your shoulder.
“Nothing much, just about how Woonhak led the basketball team to win the season last week. He’s really cool, I’d love to talk to him someday,” you make up an excuse, preferring to die than to admit that you had been staring at him.
“Woonhak?” Leehan scoffs, “I can beat him in a one-on-one anyday, y/n, I’ll show you.”
You look over at Hikaru to see her face scrunched up in very, very obvious frustration, and you almost feel sorry for her.
“Hey, Leehan! We gotta roll,” you hear Taesan from behind you, and you turn around to give him a smile in greeting.
“Well, I gotta go. I’ll see you later, baby,” Leehan ruffles your hair, standing up and turning around to leave before stopping and turning back.
“I’m leaving my partner in your care, guys! See you around,” Leehan smiles before turning to leave for real.
“y/n…” Hikaru looks at you with the most hardened glare you’ve ever seen, and you sigh. You’re dead.

You were moving from the big city to a small town. You were less than excited. All the streets looked the same to you. Plain houses built in the 60s lined neatly trimmed yards and sidewalks surrounded cul de sacs. It was the picture perfect suburbia— a small town where you would easily meet everyone your age within the first week going to your new school. You were dreading it.
“It’s so stupid that I’m moving. I’d be surprised if my dad’s new clinic is the only one that town has. They basically snatched him up the moment he accepted the offer.” You said bitterly, sipping on bubble tea with your best friend. It would probably be the last time you’d be able to have a bubble tea date with her for a while. Your heart sank at the thought.
“You’ve spent your entire life here… it’s a shame.” She sympathised, “But, you know what happens when you’re a new girl coming to a small town?”
“What?”
“You’re popular with the cute boys.” She teased.
“Come on- I’d be very surprised if I had anyone with a crush on me. I’ve never been popular.” You said, cringing as it brought back memories of your middle school years. You had gone through crush after crush, never landing on a proper relationship and always being rejected in the most humiliating way until eventually, you learned your lesson. When you got to high school, you forced yourself to stop being interested in boys. The couples making out in the hallway were enough to deter you, though. You would rather die than be that gross in public with your boyfriend. You weren’t one for PDA, that’s for sure.
“New kids either become popular, or stay quiet. There’s nothing about you not to like, so I think you have a good chance at becoming popular.” She reasoned. You thought about it. Your friend was rarely wrong. That’s what was so annoying about her. She was always right about everything. Maybe she would be right about this too.
Your phone binged with a text from your mom and you sighed, “Shit, I’d better go. The movers are here and I need to help move the boxes into the truck.”
“Alright. You’d better text me and call me when you get there. I want a house tour and everything. I’m still your best friend even if I’m 4 hours away.” She smiled and you returned it.
“I’ll keep in touch with you, don’t worry. I’ll text you later! Bye!!” You waved at her and jogged off.
Your family’s apartment had been filled with boxes for almost 2 weeks. Your mom was obsessed with having everything ready to go in advance to reduce the stress. This, of course, only increased your stress every time you looked at your bedroom’s plain walls and brown cardboard boxes stacked on the floor in place of your dresser and desk.
You had transferred all your clothes to a suitcase a week prior after having to sort through them and donate everything that was too small or that you didn’t wear often enough. Fashion had always been something you were interested in and you were already dreading the fashion atrocities you might see in a small town. You doubted they would have good clothes stores either.
You spent the rest of the day hauling boxes into the truck and struggling to help your dad lift the heavy things with the movers. Since you were just slightly stronger and more able bodied than your mom, you had no choice but to help. Moving armchairs down the stairs would be a nightmarish experience that you would remember for weeks, no doubt.
When everything was packed, you collapsed on the floor, tired and muscles aching. You looked around your empty apartment. The walls looked so bare and lonely without your mothers paintings on them. It looked way too clean and way too different. Your entire childhood had been spent living here. 17 years in this old trusty apartment complex.
You remember going over to the lady next door for tea when you were little. She would tell you about her matchmaking business and all the cute couples she had been responsible for. She promised one day to set you up with someone… looks like that plan wouldn’t be working out after all.
You stood up and walked over to her door. You hoped she was there. You wanted to say goodbye before you left tomorrow. Maybe she would offer you tea just like when you were 7.
//
Sungho peeked out his window with curiosity. The house next to his that had been inhabited by a sweet old couple had finally been sold. He had overheard his parents talking about the new family moving in. Apparently they were going to start a clinic since the father was a family doctor. Sungho wasn’t interested in that, though. What piqued his curiosity was his parents saying that the couple had a daughter. A daughter around his age.
When they had first brought up the topic over dinner, Sungho had shrugged off their teasing about a cute girl moving in. But now he was anxiously looking out his window every 5 minutes, waiting for the moving truck to pull into the driveway of the house.
His father and him were going to help the new family move in. Sungho’s mother had told him it would be a perfect opportunity to introduce himself to you. He was nervous with butterflies in his stomach at the thought. It wasn’t everyday that a new family moved into town. It was a very rare occurrence.
Soon he spotted the red car driving up the cul de sac with a moving truck following closely behind it. He gulped and fixed his hair in the mirror before running down the stairs. He joined his father outside and went through introducing themselves to your father.
He peeked at the car again, wondering if you had already stepped out. You hadn’t, but you soon did. Sungho wished you hadn’t, because shit you were pretty. He gulped and gave your father a smile before offering to grab one of the boxes. He could feel his cheeks heating up the longer he stared at you and forced himself to shake off his stare and look elsewhere. He hoped he didn’t make his pink cheeks too obvious, but he was pretty sure you hadn’t even noticed him yet. Maybe that was for the best.
“Y/n, come introduce yourself to the neighbours!” Your mother called with a smile on her face as she talked to Sungho’s parents.
You groaned and walked over, keeping your head down for the most part. You hoped they weren’t some country bumpkins who would insist on your family joining the town’s monthly potluck after a church service.
“Hello, Y/n, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Mrs. Park,” You nodded with a slightly forced smile. The lady seemed nice, honestly, but you weren’t in the best mood for socialising. You desperately wanted to set up the wi-fi at your new house so you could text your friend, but your parents would scold you if they knew that was the only thing you were thinking.
“And this is Sungho. You two are the same age.” Mrs. Park said happily, beckoning Sungho over to say hello. You looked up, slightly intrigued by what the boys were like in this new town. And Sungho did not disappoint. You couldn’t deny that he was handsome. Very handsome.
“Hi.” You smiled and waved a little. He waved back with a little lopsided smile that you could only assume was out of nervousness. He looked nice dressed in a denim jacket and hair brushed back but still a little messy from the light breeze tousling it. He must have caught you staring cause his smile widened slightly making his eyes crinkle into a cute eye smile. Fuck, why did you think he was cute?
Sungho and his dad helped move the heavy stuff into your new house. You were relieved the task wasn’t placed on you this time. While they were busy, you walked through the house, adjusting to the thought that this was your new home. Your room was bigger than before and even had a big window facing the Park’s house. Your brain automatically wondered whether it was Sungho’s room that you could see through your window. If all the houses in this town were built similarly, then it could be the case.
“Your room looks nice.” You turned around to Sungho with a big box in his hand. He set it down on the hardwood floor with a smile. “Do you want help unpacking?”
“Uh, sure! I’m not the strongest so… getting my bed and dresser in here would be a struggle.” You admitted.
“I’ll grab them for you.”
//
After your first night in your new house you realised that Sungho’s bedroom was indeed the one facing yours. He stayed up late, just like you. It was around 6 weeks later and both your lights were on still, even though it was around 11 pm. You were lying on your bed, trying to count sheep to help you fall asleep. Except all your sheep strangely morphed into Sungho because he was all you could think of.
Your family had eaten dinner with the Parks a lot of times so far, and you would say you were fairly adjusted to the new town. You didn’t go out much unless it was for a bike ride or to the library, but it wasn’t as bad as you thought. Since it was still summer and you were too introverted to want to go out and hunt for friends, the only person who you knew was Sungho. You talked a lot in your backyard or his. You caught him wearing a necklace that you had wanted for a long time and found out he was interested in fashion as well from the encounter.
It was like the most you discovered about him, the more you had in common. You even liked the same idol groups and were fans of the same authors. How did you even manage to get this lucky with your neighbour? Plus, the more you hung around him, the more you thought he was cute.
You peeked out your window to see if he was visible from his window. He was. He was sitting at his desk and the lamp on it perfectly illuminated his face so you could see all the details of it.
“I should’ve asked for his number by now, darnit.” You mumbled to yourself. You hadn’t thought of it before since you lived right next to each other, but it wasn’t like you could go over this late at night. You’d have to improvise. You thought for a second before searching through one of your unpacked boxes for your sketchbook. Usually you would doodle outfits that you thought you would look good in in this sketchbook, but for now, it was going to serve a different purpose. You got out a sharpie and started writing in large, easy to read text.
Do you stay up late a lot?
You thought it would be awkward to put a simple ‘hi’ or ‘hey’ so you stuck to a question that he could answer. It took some courage to stand where he could see you from his window and hold up the sign, but you managed.
It didn’t take very long for him to look up from his desk and notice the sign. You watched him read it and then make eye-contact with you, his charming smile overtaking his features again. He stood up and went somewhere else in his room, presumably to grab paper and a pen. Soon he was back and he held up the sign in response to yours.
Yeah. If it bothers you that my light is on, I can turn it off :)
It doesn’t bother me. I usually stay up late as well.
He smiled again, looking down at his desk as his cheeks tinted a bit. He hoped you didn’t notice. Was it weird that he already liked you so much? He was suddenly reminded of how his past crush had been stolen by another boy right in front of his eyes. His friends had told him he hadn’t been direct enough and that was why she had chosen someone more straightforward. But he had just been too shy to confess directly. He didn’t want to repeat that mistake again, so he took a breath and gathered some stored up courage, picking up his pen again.
Can I have your number?
He held up the sign nervously, one hand anxiously fiddling with his shirt as he waited for your response. You shouldn’t be too opposed, right?
I was just about to ask you! It’s *** *** **** :)
You were smiling as widely as he was which both calmed his heart and made it beat faster. What if you liked him too? What if you thought he was cute? What if he had the same effect that you had on him? He shook off all of his thoughts, telling himself that he was getting ahead of himself.
He carefully copied your number into a new contact and sent a simple ‘hey, it’s sungho’ to make sure he got it down correctly. You felt almost giddy receiving the first text from him. You had given your number to your crush just like that? And he had asked you for it? The thought had your cheeks heating up again.
It was past 1 and you were still texting him. It was hard to want to stop, he was just so cute, even over text. Whenever he thought he overstepped, he would apologise so fast until you told him that it was fine. It felt different from talking to him over the past 6 weeks. It felt way more like talking to a crush than talking to a friend, which didn’t help your bad case of lovesickness.
When you started to yawn, you decided you should probably say goodnight to him. He must be tired as well.
i’m a bit tired, i think i’m gonna go to sleep for the night - Y/n 1:21am
ok! sleep well, y/n!! - Sungho 1:21am
btw - Y/n 1:21am
yeah? - Sungho 1:22am
you’re really cute - Y/n 1:22am
goodnight! - Y/n 1:22am
You turned off your phone quickly, eyes a bit wide as you wondered why you had sent that last text. Where did you even get the confidence? God, what if he thought you were weird. He probably only saw you as a friend, or worse, the new annoying neighbour girl. You groaned at your stupidity and peeked at your phone again. He had read the text, but hadn’t replied.
“Shit, I really messed up.” You felt like smacking your head against the wall. What were you thinking?!
I think you’re cute too - Sungho 1:26am
You blinked, and then blinked again. Oh. You put down your phone and shut your eyes, willing yourself to go to sleep and not think about it too much. You could always wake up tomorrow and realise that this was a whole big misunderstanding or something. There was no way that Sungho really thought you were cute, right? But what if he did?
You opened your eyes again, looking at the texts with him again.
sleep well cutie <3 - Sungho 1:27am
You failed to get to sleep that night. So did Sungho.
