I have never seen a deer in my life.

My point wasn't "everyone's seen a deer," but "if you asked a ton of people from different areas of the world if they've seen a thing common to various parts of the world and less common in other parts you probably aren't going to be surprised by the answer."

Firearms, while more common in the US, are not exclusive to the US and are not exclusive to police/military/criminal activity. Privately owned firearms are incredibly common in the US and while somewhat less common outside the US, are not unicorns. It's not at all an odd thing for someone's gran to own a gun.
