my general rule with using the word queer in reference to someone is i wait to see if the person uses it to refer to themselves and then i use it to refer to them, otherwise i just use lgbt. like its a widely reclaimed umbrella term but some people are still uncomfortable with it and its pretty easy to just take that into consideration
#i say queer a lot but thats cuz it was used a lot in my irl community when i was growing up#our GSA was literally renamed QSA (for queer) to be more inclusive#and the teacher there used queer as a sexuality idendifier#shoutout to her she was awesome#anyway i also totally understand not liking it#cuz i dont like other reclaimed stuff like some native people reclaiming indian. they can do what they want but ill never b okay with it#- personally#using it for myself or by yt ppl using it esp#but yeah like#my area is very much open to the term queer#i know places that have queer in their name#which is interesting to me#geographical associations with words/language is sooo fascinating#i dont use it whenever its requested i dont / but i do use it as default and its kinda hard for me Not Too in my head bcuz#gestures vaguely upward#incheresting things.

all goofing aside I genuinely don't understand the urge to reimagine Taylor Allison Swift as a secretly queer icon when the pop music scene(TM) is like. literally overflowing with women who actually like women. Gaga and Kesha and Miley and Halsey are right there. Rina Sawayama and Hayley Kiyoko and Rebecca Black and Kehlani and Victoria Monét and Miya Folick if you're willing to get slightly less top 100. i feel like all three of the prominent main female characters in mapleshade's vengeance were dealt a shitty hand writing wise in their own way. obviously mapleshade goes without saying because i don't have to explain why "woman's kids die and then she starts ~hearing voices~ and becomes a murderer obsessed with revenge, also this is the backstory for the literal only major female villain in the series at this point in time" isn't great. reedshine is given no interiority and must immediately forgive her dipshit husband and take his side for the sake of substantiating the reader's sympathy for mapleshade (tangential but worth pointing out- if mapleshade was truly meant to be an unreliable narrator then there would be no need to do this!). frecklewish's whole thing is her uncontrolled grief over her dead brother making her impulsively overemotional and violent in the face of perceived betrayal, contrasted with the Poised and Reasonable men in authority around her, with recent official commentary postulating that she reacted to the death of the children she treated poorly with spiteful indifference as a result. like it's just all sooooo bad

i know whipping girl is primarily focused on the transfeminine side of things but as a trans guy i already think it has some super interesting things to say about transmasculinity.
While trans people on the female-to-male (FTM) spectrum face discrimination for breaking gender norms (i.e., oppositional sexism), their expressions of maleness or masculinity themselves are not targeted for ridicule-to do so would require one to question masculinity itself.
like obviously trans men face transphobia in different ways than trans women but i’d never thought of it in that specific way- it’s a really good point. my masculinity specifically has never been mocked but rather the fact that i am performing it at all.
its a really interesting way to point out the differences in oppression that trans men and trans women face. while a trans woman might be mocked for being too feminine, a trans guy isn’t (at least in my experience) mocked for being too masculine, rather for attempting to attain masculinity at all. femininity for trans women is seen as unattainable where as for trans men it’s seen as inescapable. whichever way you look, the concept of womanhood is being weaponised against trans people. as is such, transphobia towards trans men and trans women both stems from misogyny.
i’d love to hear some other trans guys thoughts on this! do you agree? or have you been in a situation where your masculinity has been mocked?
i think i’ll post excerpts of my favourite bits as i read through, even just these first few pages have been great. if anyone thinks i’m completely off base with my analysis let me know haha.
