We always talk about the convent scene, but imo we donât pay enough attention to the episode 8 and the scene at the company CP right in the beginning.
Things that I love, in no particular order:
Lipton clearly feverish and exhausted but still working, obviously in the center if everything, keeping things running smoothly.
Speirs quickly taking care of official things before literally dashing to loot.
Speirs shamelessly looting in front of his men, including a replacement officer (Jones) and a random private (Webster). Seriously, whatâs up with that clock?
Speirs has apparently secured a bed and fresh sheets for Lipton, who wonât be spending another night in a foxhole, or on the floor, or even on a couch with a mere blanket.
Speirs aggressively caring for Lipton, ignoring everyone âlesserâ around him. Getting Lipton to bed is his priority number one, which shows that itâs not just Lipton handling Speirs, but Speirs handling Lipton. They balance each other.
Lipton is clearly acting as Speirsâ social skills, not only introducing people to him but also remembering names, i.e. Speirs: âFine, the second. Take⊠uhâŠâ Lipton, exasperatedly off-screen: âLieutenant Jonesâ.
Speirs leaning over the back of the couch close to Lipton to discuss tactical matters with him. They speak in low voices, clearly meaning to have a private moment. Speirs values and trusts Liptonâs council about Easyâs men and the mission.
Speirs is obviously angry about being interrupted when heâs speaking with Lipton, and Lipton doesnât even look away from him, just waits for him to reprimand the poor soul and get back to him.
Lipton is comfortable enough to make a slightly sarcastic remark: âThereâs your answer.â
Itâs such a great scene with multiple dynamics and layers. Itâs from the point of view of two outsiders, Webster whoâs been away for several months and doesnât know the new faces, which includes the company C.O. Speirs, or how they have changed, and the fresh graduate Lt. Jones whoâs polished and rigidly formal professional soldier and painfully green and eager compared to the battle-hardered veterans.
Itâs also Lipton and Speirs fresh into their working relationship. They had their dramatic meeting in combat and then the sizing each other up moment in the convent, and now we see them working together as C.O. and First Sergeant. They move aorund each other with easy, gravitating towards each other and complementing each other: Lipton takes care of practical matters and brings them to Speirs, who receives orders from the batallion command and then seeks Liptonâs advice when putting the orders to action.
They are independent and comfortable with each other, and handle each other well with collaboration and support. The first impression and momentary infatuation is carrying fruit and turning into a steady dynamic.

âAt times, the two of them bicker like an old married couple. Being a rank lower than Colbert, Person can never directly express anger to him, but on occasions when Colbert is too harsh and Personâs feelings are hurt, his driving becomes erratic. There are sudden turns, and the brakes are hit for no reason. It will happen even in combat situations, with Colbert suddenly in the role of wooing his driver back with retractions and apologies.â
