The four year old was curled up in a tight little ball in her daddy's lap, she did not relax in her sleep like normal little girls and boys might, instead she was curled so tightly her knees almost touched her chin, with her arms wrapped around her daddy's neck.
But she slept very soundly, despite the noise of the train and other passengers, face tucked into his lapel against the light. She had little scraped knees, and bitten fingernails with dirt around them, and was holding a very worn out floppy brown rabbit squished between her and Bruce.
She had found it in India shortly after they went on the run, and refused to give it up, even for one in better shape. It was dirty and tattered, but had once been velvet or velour, it was surprisingly soft now. It was old, slightly creepy, but Rose had her nose buried against it. Between her and the bunny was a book, far too mature for a four year old, large and hardback. Luckily the dust jacket was missing, and the title wasn't on the spine, but she was nearly cuddling a book titled The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers.
The train gave a little lurch, and rather than jump or groan and shift, she just opened her eyes, the barest hint of green around her pupils, and looked around. Then she leaned up a little higher and hugged Bruce, so she could whisper, "How much farther, Daddy?"
Must it always be this way?
On the run, again…would it ever end? Bruce shifted the tiny sleeping figure on his shoulder and sighed, staring out the window of the train that was taking him cross country to California. Rose was the only good thing in his shattered life, keeping him from going over the edge more times than he could count.
He held her closer, fingers threaded through the 4 year olds soft brown hair. She and him against the world since Betty had died, killed by the man she called her father because they were after her husband. How he wished things could have been different, but no the fates had always sought to conspire against him and her.
Two and a half years on the run now, He thought they had finally found a little bit of stability out in Kansas, but yesterday he had seen the military roll in and he had rolled out in the middle of the night, clutching her to him as he ran first for the bus station and later boarded the train that would take them west. They were running out of places to hide but he had a friend in California who would get him overseas to India. Tony Stark, out in Malibu. He had met him a few times at conferences, and now he had called him in sheer desperation, thankful his number hadn’t changed, begging him for a chance to provide safety for his daughter, and he had obliged.
