‘A Year in the USA’, video (January 2020)

Over the past few months I have become very interested in this quote by Roland Barthes (title), and am trying to work out why it feels so poignant. The metal frame with a handle references an empty sign, an object that is simply pointing our attention to something but has no content in itself. The photograph is one I took of dead leaves on a tree in late spring during the first lockdown. On the drawing I wrote the word “furious” (from the Barthes quote) and covered it with tape. Due to Covid restrictions I have not been allowed in the metal workshop, and I had to get our metal work technician to do the twists, referencing wrought iron fences. This is something I’m still working on.
