Yang narrowed her eyes as she pushed herself up off the ground, “How in the hell did you survive?”
Her sister had told her about what she saw. A Nevermore had eaten him. She hadn’t ever heard of this happening anywhere.
Once she was on her feet, she tensed up. Her gauntlet popped open and the gun she installed in the prosthetic followed suit.
“ I ate my vegetables and vitamins like a good little
boy! ”
The sarcasm couldn’t have been heavier in his voice.
The truth behind it was, he survived the same way
he survived the train explosion in downtown Vale:
Dust infused clothing, aura training, and a ton of
luck.
Upon seeing Yang fiddle with her weapon, though,
he lifted his hands a little to show a lack of willingness
to fight in this particular instance.
“ Woooah, sweetness, I’m not here for our usual
song and dance. I just need a place to rest and
a drink. This is neutral ground and you know it. ”

❗ So Torchwick, What's your secret? How have you managed to remain large and in charge so long without getting caught?
Send a “❗” to force the truth out of my muse.

@blondie-brawler answered your ask
Well this was embarrassing and made him seem like
he lacked grace. At least his impact was softened by
something... soft. Oh. Roman now realized what the
softness was. It was one of those kids that hung around
Red.
They are just a consistent problem for me, aren’t they?
“ Well, this isn’t exactly how I wanted you and your
little friends to figure out I was still alive, but I guess
beggars can’t be choosers, can they? I’ll get off of
you so neither of our leaders think we’re in bed with
the enemy. That and... so you don’t punch me into
next year with that shotgun fist thing you have. ”
Roman went ahead and got off of Yang then brushed
himself off, grabbing Melodic Cudgel and making sure
his hat was probably aligned on his head.

“I can inform you here jackass, that I do not do this for money. I do this for the people of Remnant, ‘cept for Atlas they can take care of themselves. I try my best to fight for the people and the people only. So I’m going to warn you one last time Torchboy.”
“Put your weapon down and come with me silently I’m taking you straight to jail where you belong. Also if your friend is a bit murdery… I invite her to try and take me down. Cause I’ll make sure both of you have a jail romance date with some shitty made cookies.”
“ Well, funny story, I think she thinks I’m dead so... that’s not
gonna happen. She won’t fall for you using me as bait, if that’s
what you’re thinking. Also, little problem with your plan, she
will be less... revengy... if I’m there. You know, she’ll kill less
people. Unless you don’t care. Could be a pride thing. I respect
that less than the money thing, though. Only suckers value
pride over lives. ”
Roman knew he was playing a risky game here, but he knew he
was right. Neo could take care of herself, but he could only imagine
the blinded rage she’d feel without him there. A lot of people in her
way would get hurt. At least with Roman in charge of doing the crimes,
lives were spared if they stayed out of the way. However, Roman caught
that thing Jack said about Atlas...
“ And don’t hand me that ‘I’m just following orders’ jargon. Only
someone from Atlas would pull that card. ”

“Old allies?” She questioned. “You know damn well I won’t help you over anything as vague as that. I hope you realize the position you’re in, Mr. Torchwick.” Her voice dropped a couple of octaves and she lifted her hand. It was a simple thing to increase his gravity. Twice the normal amount would be a good start, enough to make him sweat. She would increase it the longer he went without giving her a satisfactory answer.
“You come here and you’re dragging me back into a life I left behind, a life I hate. Do you know what I did to the last person to use me like their little wind up doll? I shot him. 23 times.” Her hand clenched and the gravity increased to three times the normal amount.
“I was the Head of the Mistral Council’s pet project, you see.” She quipped rather casually, like she wasn’t threatening to crush Roman where he stood. “You said it yourself earlier, Mistral’s Finest Weapon! He never even realized that I was stabbing him in the back for it until I literally did so. So let me make myself very clear, Mr. Torchwick…”
Adrastia strode forward with a purpose, grabbing his collar and dragging the man down to her level. She released the hold she had on his personal gravity, letting it go back to normal. “I will not be your lackey. I am your partner in this, nothing less, and only because you have given me no choice… Which is a very dangerous position for a man like you to be in. So, you will tell me everything and you will do your best to keep me appeased. Do I make myself clear?”
Were it not for Melodic Cudgel acting like an extra leg for
Roman to lean on when suddenly the air around him felt
so much heavier, he had no doubt in his mind that power
of hers would have forced him on all fours.
His nervous quirk that got him into more trouble than out of
trouble rose up, nervous laughter escaping him beyond his
own control.
“ Agh... yes, yes, I get it! Sorry for being so cocky! I don’t know
why I am in the first place. The old allies I was talking about is
Cinder and her allies. My sources tell me they’re headed for Atlas,
so that’s where I’m going! To grovel at their damn feet and hope
they don’t take my tardiness as incompetence! ”
Roman tried to remind himself as little as he could about the lack
of power he had in this situation, but when coming across as someone
as dangerous as Adrastia, one could become humble rather quickly.
She had him by the collar now, and he dropped his cane and put his
hands up to show a sign of cooperation.
“ I’ll put in a good word for you when I see them. O-Or I won’t mention
you at all! Whichever you want! I promise I won’t double-cross you. The
last powerful, raven-haired woman I pissed off almost incinerated me. ”

That sounded about right. From what she had heard of Cinder, she was awfully… insistent. She was thankful that Dr. Watts had found her instead of the alternative. At least the esteemed doctor understood that the promise of a reward was far more motivating than the promise of keeping one’s life. What had she even been living for back then anyway? Yes… if it had been Cinder that had walked into her life instead of Watts, there was no doubt in Adrastia’s mind that she would be dead.
“Of course you left a trail…” Adrastia muttered under her breath. That was painfully typical. It was insurance in case this little meeting with her didn’t go as planned. “So what’s your big plan here? You track me down to enlist my help with something? What do you even need me for? Protection? Sounds like this Neo already has that covered.”
Damn him… Just by the mere act of meeting with her, he had just put her life into very real jeopardy. Just when she thought she was free too…
“You’re not the type to lay low and live a modest life.” Just look at him! On the run and still dressing and acting like he owned the place. “Going up against our former employers isn’t an option. Are you going to turn yourself in and hope Atlas is going to protect you or some shit?” Adrastia outright snorted. “Good luck with that. Last I heard, they fucking hate you. I wouldn’t be doing you any favors on that front either.”
A lazy grin crossed her face, like she was recalling a fond memory. “Not after I murdered the entire Mistral council a few months back.”
“ Atlas?! Protect me?! Ahahahahah! That’s rich! You’re joking,
right? You can’t seriously think that’s my plan. If I wanted that,
I’d just rob a bank in Argus and wait for the cops with my hands
in the air. ”
Roman wiped fake tears from his eyes after the fake laughter
he expressed. Adrastia had a right to lose any patience with
Roman considering how frustrating her was being. Still, this
cocky facade was probably the one thing that kept him sane
while he slowly accepted the fact that his life of free roam was
behind him and now he was a puppet to a master he’d never
be powerful enough to break free from.
“ No, no. I need your help breaking Atlas’ blockade to meet
up with my old allies. I mean, if you know how to enter the abodes
of Mistralian council members and take them out, then you clearly
know your way around some security. I’d ask Neo to help me but...
well, I have some theories that our mutual friends have already
smuggled their way into Atlas somehow. ”
That, or they were well on their way to Vacuo. But Roman was
willing to take that 50/50 risk as a gambling man.

Glynda rolled eyes at the cigar. She didn’t exactly appreciate the second hand she’d be getting, but she wouldn’t make a fuss about it.
“Really? Not even in the time where you piloted a stolen Atlaesan Paladin down a business highway. Or when you were present on the train that caused the breech in the center of Vale?… Should I go on?”
She listened to his explanation. It was obvious that he was working for someone, his more recent crimes didn’t fit his normal profile. Herself and the group she was working with had suspicions as to where this all lead and what events were actually connected, but they couldn’t prove anything.
“Look, Roman. I don’t know what exactly you want from me. I already told you that I haven’t seen anyone by that description. Given the uniqueness of that appearance I would have probably seen her if she still looked like that or was even still here. If you want help getting out of trouble with your employer, I’m sure something could be arranged.”
“ I’ve done crazy things, doll-face, but that doesn’t mean I’m
crazy. That’s just what I do when my back’s against the wall. ”
Maybe he shouldn’t have said that last part. It was too telling.
Granted, before Cinder approached Roman, Roman was no
model citizen. But Glynda’s assumptions would be correct...
his recent crimes didn’t fit his normal profile. A little too messy
for Roman’s liking. But when someone points a proverbial gun
to his head and tells him to choose between lives, Roman would
always choose himself.
“ Also, the police are gone and the jail’s broken, so I doubt I’m
worth your time for an arrest seeing as how all the infrastructure
and literal structures are busted. I don’t know. Maybe I thought
the Grimm might leave me alone if I was with a capable fighter?
Maybe Grimm just aren’t good conversationalists, and you’re
easy on the eyes? ”
In all honesty, Roman was just being high-profile so it’d be easy
for his allies to find him. If he tried to lay low, he was afraid they’d
think he was hiding from them. And that would spell disaster.

The same team. Were they though? For the longest time, Adrastia had worked for Dr. Watts, furthering his own goals in Mistral as a way to get what she wanted. It had been an… enlightening experience. It gave her a better idea of what was really out there. Roman didn’t work for Watts, she knew, but if he was centered in Vale… That was Cinder’s territory. Her own employer made a point of ranting about her drearily often.
It was rather like separate departments in a company. She had been located in one department and Roman had been located in another. And now it seemed he was trying to get a little cooperation going. How sweet.
“You’re barking up the wrong tree.” She told him. “I did my job, I got what I wanted, and then I left. Do you think I’d be hiding out here in the middle of nowhere if I wanted to keep contact with our… employer?” This mysterious figure behind both Watts and Cinder. She hoped that she never had to meet them. “By all rights, I should just kill you right here and save myself the trouble of you telling them where to find me.”
She knew how this game worked. No matter what promises were made, there was no leaving. And yet she had left anyway. That meant she would be hunted. Not only had she betrayed her home, but she had betrayed those eyes in the dark that she had been working for. All her bridges were burned now. She and Roman were both survivors. Surely he’d know what she would do if backed into a corner.
“ You mean to tell me you actually got something out of it?
I was just given a do it or die ultimatum. Speakin’ o’ which... ”
If this young lady truly killed these offguard huntsmen and
huntresses, she was truly a force to be reckoned with. In fact,
part of Roman didn’t doubt she could kill him if he was so dumb
as to stay and fight instead of just run away.
“ That’s kind of why I’m here. If they find out it took me so long
to get back to them when I’ve been alive this whole time, they’ll
save you the trouble and kill me first. ”
Roman then leaned on his cane once again, more darkness
in his voice, eyes narrowing with increasing gruffness in his
tone.
“ And if you kill me here and now, you better do a good job
of covering up the murder and cleaning up the bread crumb
trail I left. Because assuming Neo doesn’t kill you, you’ll remind
our higher ups that you’re a loose end. ”

Oh so he actually felt quite a bit of pain from that it seemed. Good. It wasn’t nearly as much fun to shoot someone otherwise. Although it begged the question of how much training he actually had. All the rumors said that Roman Torchwick was a fully trained huntsman and that was why he was so dangerous. Yet, that shouldn’t have hurt him as much as it evidently did… Which told her quite a lot. Was he out of practice, perhaps? Or…
“You have no idea who you’re talking to, do you?” Adrastia asked, crossing her arms. Clearly she had been using her semblance far too freely. The whole point of coming all the way out here was to be left alone, but if the villages in the area could so easily point anyone her way… It was something to consider once she was done dealing with Roman. It might be time to move on to somewhere else.
“Who exactly do you think caused all those huntsmen to disappear?” It had been something she had been working on for a year. Ever since she had gotten back from the Vytal Festival, that had been her marching orders: work with Leo to cull Mistral’s huntsmen population. She had been the spider, and Leo was the one directing them into her web. She became remarkably efficient at it.
“If you knew me at all, you’d know that defending Mistral is the least of my priorities. Let it burn.”
That much was true. Roman was a good fighter in the sense
that he was good at blocking attacks with his cane and he was
a quick thinker, but all of his training was informal. The man had
never even unlocked his Semblance. While that made him quite
outmatched by a skilled huntsman or huntress, he was still dangerous
enough to those who let their guard down.
Leaning on his cane a bit, still attempting to get over the
frustration of just being shot, Roman kept that forced smile
on his face.
“ Oh! Good! We’re on the same team, then. Sorry, it’s just
our uh... mutual employer leaves me out of the loop so often
it’s kind of insulting. ”
Roman knew that part of Cinder’s plan involved getting rid
of the huntsmen around Mistral (and especially Haven) but
he wasn’t told much beyond that because all of her plans
were on a need-to-know basis. Which meant that Adrastia
was apart of that plan, or... she was just some nutjob that was
murdering huntsmen. For once, Roman hoped it wasn’t the
latter, and went off on that assumption.
“ Man does that make this so much easier! Finally, it’s like
the break I kept asking for! So, doll, you mind showing me
to your contact? Or... are you just some crazy lady who’s been
murdering huntsmen left and right for no reason? ”

So the woman Roman was looking for was an ally to him and not a target. Still though, better to play this situation carefully.
“That is obviously very concerning, but I somehow doubt that you two would be any less dangerous together then apart. Vale doesn’t need any more problems now of all times, thank you very much.”
The last part deliver with more then a hint of venom. She had enough on her plate already to deal with and dear gods did it show. It was probably is generally tiredness; both physically and mentally of everyone else, that she was even entertaining the criminal instead of instantly locking him up again.
“You’re sure that your friend wouldn’t have been in disguise somehow? Your crimes don’t exactly scream subtlety, but that doesn’t mean your allies can’t exercise some.”
Roman went ahead and lit a cigar, taking a couple of
puffs before responding to Glynda. Granted, he didn’t
expect the huntress to actually cooperate with him and
say Yes, Mr. Torchwick, Neo’s exact location is right over
there. Here’s a transport and some cash! But a small part
of him could fantasize, right?
“ Our crimes would be more efficient. But dangerous? Sweetheart,
you wound me. My planning and stealing is an art, and I make
sure no one gets hurt as long as they listen to me. I’m a criminal,
not a psychopath. ”
Little did Roman know just who he was working for, though. In
fact, unbeknownst to him, Glynda knew more about his ‘employer’
than he did.
“ I don’t normally do this, but I’ll be honest for a change. Cards on
the table. It’s kind of obvious I wasn’t working alone now. I can
tell you must be weak and tired from fighting Grimm. I mean, I am,
too. Damn things can’t tell the difference between friend and foe.
And yes, if I take too long to get back to my employer, she’ll want
my head on the chopping block. You have me in the palm of your
hands. That being said, you’ll forgive me if I’m a little insistent. ”

Without a second thought, Adrastia raised her gun and put a bullet through Roman’s leg. He would be fine, she knew. The man had aura, after all. This was nothing but a flesh wound. A bruise. But hey, he’d asked for it, and it was awfully cathartic for her.
“Hello, Roman.” She replied without any enthusiasm. There was the question of how exactly the former Vale kingpin had been able to find her, but then again, this was Roman Torchwick they were talking about. Of course he would find a way. It didn’t surprise her that he wasn’t dead like all the rumors said. She’d always heard the man was a survivor. They were similar in that regard.
Still, it annoyed the fuck out of her that he called her Mistral’s Finest Weapon, so she shot him again for good measure.
“I can guarantee you that nothing you say or have in that atrocious hat of yours will be something I want.” She’d already gotten what she wanted. What would Roman Torchwick of all people have to offer her now? “So you better make this worth my while.”
Roman was shot once, then twice. Yes, his aura blocked it
in time, but he was no master huntsman, so it still hurt like
hell. He sucked air through his teeth, waving his cane around
out of a brash moment of anger.
“ Listen here, you little runt- ”
Roman then suddenly remembered why he was here in the
first place, took a deep breath, and calmed himself down. A
forced smile took the place of the scowl that formed on the
criminal’s face.
“ Got that out of your system? Are we happy now? Good.
Anyway, I was gonna propose a deal. An I-scratch-your-back
you-scratch-mine kind of thing. The villages around here told
me about a young woman - that’s you - that has very powerful
gravitational abilities. Well, all the huntsmen in Mistral seemed
to have vanished. So that just leaves one question: Without your
masters around, do you wanna take their place and defend
Mistral? Or would you rather strike it on your own? ”

“Thats because this is technically an Atlas base, but their commander decided he would lead from the front against that Grimm that showed up against Argus. He’s deep sixed now so they’re kind of lost. Cue my team rolling in…our base now.”
And what a perfect opportunity it had afforded too! CAMOs official mission was to find Neo and Cinder; their unofficial to cause hell for Atlas while it was still unstable; and here was Neo’s boss, perfect for both.
It was his strike on the Atlas airships over Vale that had let them take this base so easily too. All they’d said was “I think Roman may be heading this way” and the standing base commander had tossed them the keys.
“As for staying…well, as much as I’d like to let you roam around freely to make the Whitehats squirm, I do have an image to maintain. But I can at least take those chains off for now, and find you a nicer cell.”
He held up the key.
“Just don’t try and make a break for it JUST yet, or I’ll have to play my part of it and…”
He gave the chainsword a squeeze. The osmium-tipped teeth on its surface circled with a rattling of metal and the engine roared like a hungry Grimm.
“I’d rather not, if its all the same to you.”
This Ash was plenty smarter than some of the soldiers that
had been left in charge of Roman before. Honestly? The hug
thing was just to get the key through some skillful pickpocketing,
but if Ash was going to let him go anyway...
“ Thought you wouldn’t be that dumb. You’d be surprised how
many times Atlas goons fell for it, though. ”
Roman knew how risky it was to admit that, but he was getting
the feeling Ash’s loyalties were more local than they were kingdom
wide. And if there was one thing Roman was good at, it was inspiring
revolution in peoples who were given a raw deal by their bigger, badder
government. Roman offered his cuffed hands to Ash, giving a nod to
show his compliance with these terms.
“ If you’re interested in things Atlas has left unguarded, how about we
skip the part where you torture information out of me and I just tell
you where some stolen Dust shipments are? I’ve heard of that
Dust embargo, and deep down the humanitarian in me just hates
the idea of your men not having the ammo needed to fight off... oh...
Grimm... Bandits... Atlas, wanting their things back... ”

“Actually, I’m more surprised it took someone this long to figure out you WEREN’T dead. Men like you are notoriously hard to kill.”
Typical Atlas incompetence…but, then again, they had plenty on their plates.
The Hunter-Killer rose from his chair, lifting his chainsword as he did to rest it on the floor. He doubted that Roman would care one way or another (you didn’t get to be a master criminal by being easily intimidated), but it would work on the guards, for sure.
“Go do something more useful.” He said to them, waving his hand. “You’ll ruin those nice uniforms.”
And they left. Hurriedly. As was fitting.
Closing the door, Ash looked over at Roman.
“So. Let me guess…trying to punch a hole through the blockade into Atlas?”
It was really the only thing that he could be doing.
“You’re heading the right direction, if you’re trying to regroup with your ice cream colored waifu. She’s been reported heading north as well.”
After receiving that wealth of information, Roman’s eyes
widened a little, his cocky smirk turning into something
resembling a genuine smile.
“ Thank you! You know, you have genuinely been a bigger
help than anyone else I’ve come across! I’d give you a hug,
but, again... ”
Roman once more gestured to his cuffs, a fake chuckle coming
from the man as he took in the surroundings. While the weapon
near Ash didn’t intimidate him, it definitely served as a reminder
that trying anything funny would be... cut short.
“ Also, I wouldn’t call Neo that. We haven’t done anything at an
altar, if you catch my drift. It’d ruin our whole partners in crime
vibe with too much sickening sweetness. So... where will I be
staying? Because I’ve been arrested before, and so far, I’m
impressed. I heard that Mantle was basically just a hole that
Atlas was ashamed of, but I’d rate this place at least two more stars
than the last Atlas cell I was stuck in! ”
