Wilson Cruz became the first out actor playing an out series regular on network television.
Wilson Cruz:
I really believed it would be more powerful if young people understood the person playing that role stood behind that story. But when we made the pilot in 1993, ABC didn't pick it up. So we went through a whole year where we were put on hold. I made a pact that if we got picked up that I would come out to my parents. We got picked up, and I told my mom first. It went okay. I told my dad, and my dad threw me out of the house. We had about three months before we started to go into production on the series. And between my car and, um, some friends' couches, I made it through three months. And when I told Winnie my story, she decided that that was also gonna happen to Rickie on My So-Called Life.
Winnie Holzman:
I was starting to feel this sense of responsibility toward just expressing what I understood was really some young gay people's experiences in life. I mean, obviously not all, but, unfortunately, too many.
Wilson Cruz:
So Christmas of '93 I tell my father, and we stopped speaking. And in December of '94, the episode in which Rickie is thrown out of his house airs. Ten, fifteen minutes pass, and my phone rings. And it's my dad. And, uh...he says, "You know, I think it's about time we talked."
There is not a day that goes by that I don't get a message from somebody who says their life was changed because of Rickie. And I wonder sometimes, you know, how many fathers turned to their sons or daughters and said, "I think it's time for us to talk."
That's the power of TV.

omg you're looking for a new book to read?! i totally recommend A COURT OF BALLS AND FIRE.. it's ya m/m enemies-to-lovers! the main character is a pure cinnamon roll hero and the love interest is a war criminal with a zuko redemption arc! the author used to blaze their fanfiction on tumblr and that's how they got discovered! the book is actually rewritten billary fanfic but it's so well written you can't even tell! there's this super cute meet-cute they have in the beginning of the book where the li is about to set off a landmine in the mc's village but the mc flashes his puppy dog eyes and omg!!! it's just so cute you have to read it!!!!!!! watch out there's some steamy scenes too 👀 including one where they experiment with a flaming hot torch... OOPS haha no spoilers!!!! there are some trigger warnings though so watch out for the homophobia, transphobia, racism, colorism, xenophobia, murder, suicide, patricide, matricide, sexualization of dogs, taylor swift references, woobification of slave owners... i think that's it. oh the li says a slur on the first page but besides that i swear it's a really good read!!!! xiran jay zhao rated it FIVE STARS!!!!!!

i was always bothered by the lack of like official concept art for kim kitsuragi that's available. there's like, three total pictures? which made no sense to me given how he's a main character, he's there with you for most of the game, how can this be all of it. where's the early iterations. alternate designs. turns out it's because they apparently drew him once and were like "oh this is perfect. we can't improve on this. we nailed it" and just moved on
i once joked that given how little insight there is into his creation and how little concept art there was of him, he probably just appeared fully formed in the game one day. apparently i wasn't far off. his portrait is literally from pre-production just with colours slapped on it. "a slam dunk from the get-go". character of all fucking time
