The Good Shepherd are delighted to announce that legendary singer/songwriter Robert Plant CBE has become a patron of the Wolverhampton-based charity. The rock icon has been a long-time supporter of the work of the Good Shepherd, but has now stepped up his backing to become a patron, including supporting the creation of a new trainee scheme offering two paid trainee roles within the organisation for people with lived experience of homelessness and other issues. These trainees have both been participants on the Good Shepherd’s LEAP programme and these roles – embedded to support service users accessing the charity – form a key part of their recovery journey. Robert has taken a keen interest in the long-standing Wolverhampton charity for many years, and invited representatives to have a presence at his concert at The Halls last December to raise awareness of their work, providing food and support services to people experiencing homelessness and vulnerability across the city.

TRIVIA - FUN FACTS
MESSIN' WITH THE MEKON" title is from a fictional character in the comic "Dan Dare" which appeared in the British boys magazine ‘Eagle’. The Mekon was the head of the alien race, the Treens, who inhabited the northern half of the planet Venus.
BIG LOG: The title ‘Big Log’ has absolutely nothing to do with the song nor lyrics. Robert Plant finished the song and could not come up with a title. One of the band members at the time came in with a handful of logs to put in the fireplace. One of the logs were too big and long. It would not fit horizontally nor vertically. Someone said to the affects of: “you’re never going to get the big log in that small fireplace” but he put it in anyway and the entire room started filling with smoke! Hence, Robert titled the song “Big Log”.
HORIZONTAL DEPARTURE: The title ‘Horizontal Departure’ has nothing to do with the song nor lyrics. Once again, Robert finished the lyrics to this song and couldn’t come up with a title. The lads were having drinks at a bar and one of the band members were a tad tipsy shall we say, and couldn’t walk. Two band members picked him up, one by his feet and one by his hands and carried him departing out the door “horizontally”. Hence, Robert came up with the title “Horizontal Departure”.

Pagetation from Rolling Stone interview 10/2020. Page: I wanted to create music to make something that would change people’s lives and get them happy for some time. That’s what it’s all about. If you’ve managed to do something where you’ve just learned a couple of chords to start with, and you’ve managed to turn it into your profession, and you’re being so serious about it that you’ve been able to make inroads with it, whether it was as a studio musician or with the Yardbirds or Led Zeppelin, and you’ve managed to make music that’s made a difference to people, being able to pass on the baton to young people of all I learned from James Burton and the Rock and Roll Trio, and Albert King, Freddie King, and B.B. King, and Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson, and this melting pot, that, to me, is the lifetime achievement. You’ve made a difference. So, that’s really cool.

Pagetation from interview with Rolling Stone Magazine. Here’s the relative part of the quote. Good interview and insight from Jimmy. - But how did you put those concepts into practice? Jimmy: When we got Led Zeppelin, when there was this wonderful rhythm section there, I got Robert down to my house and we discussed the sort of stuff that I wanted to do. I played him some things. One of them being “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You,” because I’d already worked out what I wanted to do on the guitar. I said, “I know this sounds a bit abstract, but if you can sing that sort of melody, stick to that plaintive melody line Joan Baez is singing, you’ll see how it fits.” He does it, and he’s like, “Yeah, this is great.” It was just a joining of two minds. It was wonderful. So by the time we went into the rehearsal, it really, really kicked, because now you’ve got four people all firing on all cylinders to the point where it’s one, two, three, four in, and from the very first bar is a life-changing experience for each and every one of us in that room. By the time we finished playing, we’re all looking at each other and smiling because we’d never played with any other musicians to arrive at that sort of chemistry. And that chemistry continued all the way through the band.
