Toxtricity Type: Electric/Poison Ability: Punk Rock, Plus/Minus. Hidden Ability: Technician

Strap in, babes, I’ve got a lot to say on Galar’s resident stagnant water chugging bad boy!

Toxtrixity is a very interesting Pokemon, and at least as far as design goes, my favorite Pokemon of Generation 8. It has a nice looking special Attack stat, and a decent enough Attack stat.

Toxel, its pre-evolved form, will either evolve into Amped up Toxtricity (Purple and Yellow) or Low Key Toxtricity (Purple and blue) depending on its nature.

To get Amped up, you need a Toxel with Adamant, Brave, Hostile, Hardy, Hasy, Impish, Jolly, Lax, Naive, Naughty, Rash, Quirky, or Sassy nature.

To get Low Key, you need a Toxel with Bashful, Bold, Calm, Careful, Gentle, Lonely, Mild, Modest, Quiet, Relaxed, Serious, or Timid nature

The base stats of both are the same, however, if you know natures, you know that the stats of both are not the same in the end. The other key difference is in their secondary abilities. Amped up gets Plus and Low Key gets Minus. But Punk Rock is the ability you want on this guy.

Punk Rock, a new ability exclusive to Toxtricity, boosts the power of sound based moves while also reducing the damage taken from them. By level up, both forms of Toxtricity can learn Boomburst, a sound-based move with a base power of 140. They can also both learn Hyper Voice via TR (TRs, or Technical Records, are a new type of move teaching item that function like TMs did in the past, in that they can only be used once.)

Now, with all that in mind, and due to Toxtricity having higher base Sp.Atk, and not totally fantastic stats everywhere else, I think a Modest nature Low Key Toxtricity is the best option. This will reduce its Atk stat, but boost its Sp.Atk stat, maximizing the effectiveness of Punk Rock’s effect on Boomburst and Hyper Voice. Couple this with the new held item Throat Spray, which boosts special attack when a Pokemon uses a sound-based move, and Toxtricity can do some work. Just make sure you avoid ground-type moves like the plague…

Alternatively, you could go with a Timid nature, which reduces attack and boosts speed. You won’t get quite as much unga potential out of it, but you’ll at least be a bit faster. Could matter.

Amped up Toxtricity, as cool as it is, doesn’t seem worth it to me. Nothing’s stopping you from using it, but keep these things in mind. you won’t be making use of any of its abilities. Plus only works in double battles along side Minus, and powers up Special attack, and Technician is its hidden ability, giving a 50% boost to all moves with base power of 60 and under. Toxtricity only learns 5 moves that would be affected by this ability by level up. Nuzzle (20), Acid (40), thundershock (40), Acid Spray (40), and Shock wave (60) Do you see the problem there? With the exception of Nuzzle, they’re all special attacks. All moves it can learn by TM with a BP of 60 and under are also special attacks. So if you absolutely must have Amped up, just know its abilities are totally useless.

Toxtricity does have access to some decent physical moves, however, but by level up, only 2 of these will be STAB moves. Spark and Poison Jab. It can learn Thunder Punch by TM, and Gunk shot and Wild Charge by TR

In summary: To get the absolute most out of Toxtricity, you’re going to want either a Modest or Timid nature, and the Punk Rock ability, with EV investment in Sp.Atk and Speed.

Now. Lets talk move sets. I will only be focusing on Low Key Toxtricity from here onward.

Because Toxtricity doesn’t have fantastic speed or defenses, its going to be purely a Pokemon for smacking things around, as it likely won’t live long enough to enjoy the benefits of setting up status moves. You’re going to want to get in, hit hard. With this in mind, I’m looking at purely offensive move sets.

Ability: Punk Rock Held Item: Throat Spray/Choice scarf Nature: Modest EV investment: Sp. Atk, Speed. MOVES Overdrive Boomburst Sludge Bomb/Sludge Wave Snarl Overdrive is Toxtricity’s signature move, and is an Electric-type sound-based attack, gaining both STAB and Punk Rock boost. It has a base power of 80. Boomburst is a normal-type sound-based move with a base power of 140. While lacking STAB, it gains a boost from Punk Rock

Sludge Bomb is another STAB move for Toxtricity with a base power of 90 and a 30% chance to poison the target. Sludge Wave deals slightly more damage, but has a lower chance to poison the target, with just 10% Snarl is a dark-type sound-based move with a base power of 55. It gains a boost from Punk Rock. This is coverage against Psychic types.

You can go for maximum offense with throat spray to give a further boost to sound-based moves, or choose to go with Choice scarf, which will give Toxtricity a 50% boost to speed, letting Punk Rock do all the damage boosting work

Sadly, Toxtricity has no coverage for ground-type Pokemon, though with the sheer amount of power behind its Boomburst, and the fact that ground-types aren’t really known for speed, that may not be a problem…
