Five Love Languages of Danmei: Grand Tournament
Tumblr media Tumblr media
["Anti-Propaganda" that attacks other characters is NOT allowed. Please only give reasons to vote FOR a character/ship & be courteous in the notes.]
Bingqiu from The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (Cooking)
Characters: Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan)
One of Luo Binghe’s main hooks as a stallion novel protagonist (that gets him a giant harem) is his cooking. It’s so delicious Shen Qingqiu, who wants to avoid “wife plots,” can’t help but have him cook for him.
Submission:
Luo Binghe's love language is literally cooking! He starts making Shen Qingqiu's meals as a teenager, then makes him three meals a day for the 5 years Shen Qingqiu is dead, and ofc cooks for him regularly after they get together. Binghe's congee might as well be a symbol of their love at this point!
Yuesong from Mistakenly Saving the Villain (Pining)
Characters: Song Qingshi and Yue Wuhuan
Submission:
First, you get Song Qingshi spending 1,350 lifetimes falling in love with and trying over and over again to rescue Yue Wuhuan. (His 1,351st attempt finally succeeds! Yay! Also, *holy shit*.) Then things happen to Song Qingshi, and you get Yue Wuhuan spending 3,000 years waiting for Song Qingshi to reincarnate. And then the lore drops, and you find out that then-newly-ascended-stone Song Qingshi had already been mesmerized by Phoenix-God Yue Wuhuan ten thousand years before the story started. And *then* the background of the universes' worldbuilding is revealed, and you realize that Yue Wuhuan had actually been waiting for Song Qingshi for literally hundreds of millions of years, long before these two ever even had human forms. You want "long-ass time"? Here's your long-ass time. (And on that note, if you enjoy MXTX books and want to read something that's an unholy mixture of SVSSS and TGCF cranked up to 100000%, please read MisVil.)
Additional Propaganda: Over 20,000 Years

Priest (Author) Character Tournament
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[“Anti-propaganda” is not allowed. Please only give reasons to vote FOR a character, and please be courteous in the notes.]
Yan Zhengming from Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect
"I've grown into this age, but other than this face that my parents had birthed me with, there is nothing on my person that holds any sort of value. What right do I have to change the thousand-year tradition of our sect? In any case, even if the sect tradition makes no sense whatsoever, it's still something left behind by our master."  - Yan Zhengming, The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect, Chapter 38
[No propaganda submitted]
The “Narcissist” from the description - “A cultivation story about how a declining sect is restored by a narcissist, troublemaker, meanie, idiot, and wimpy kid.”
THE prettiest princess; he’s literally referred to as Niangniang (a term for an imperial concubine) at least once
He is such a materialist who is even described as caring more about money than life, but "When he thought of Cheng Qian, he suddenly felt like there was nothing else that he desired in this life" (Ch.56).
Wu Xi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Submission:
My beloved snake boy!! He goes as a hostage to a foreign land at eleven years old in order to maintain uneasy peace between his country and the empire that colonized them (and on that note, his initial language struggle was so good), then he manages to help keep his love interest safe from thousands of kilometers away via peerless potions skills, then he goes and *wins his nation's freedom* via martial might and court negotiations, and then he heals his man and gets him home. Like bulletpoint by bulletpoint I think he might have actually managed to accomplish the most out of the cast by the end. (Qi Ye is a palace intrigue novel btw, so it's amazing that the one character who had zero patience with palace intrigue was the one who accomplished so much lmao.) And all this while being a 20-something borderline-yandere ML obsessed with his first love. What a man. What a legend. Not to mention his epic healer skills were the reason Zhou Zishu survives Faraway Wanderers. Wenzhou get their happy ending because of him! Also, he hand-raised the most lovable animal sidekick of all time (sable!!!!!) before said sable defected to his husband. Vote for Wu Xi to make sable happy.

(1) Interesting how Beiyuan's past lives were various fauna & flora; meanwhile, Wuxi is particularly good at taking care of that menagerie of his.
(2) Beiyuan's past lives deserve all the kisses, too.

Ooof, Xiyuan's gonna lose this 😅 but I still want to reiterate the reasons I find them to be the more suitable couple in this matchup (spoilers):
* Wuxi (in his Bai Wuchang lifetime) became the soulhook enjoy because he was "waiting for his fated one". By the time we meet Bai Wuchang, he's been the soulhook envoy for tens of thousands of years. The 305++ years quoted here is a very low-ball estimate.
* Pining/waiting as a concept is central to Qi Ye's romantic development in a way that it isn't for most other stories, even compared to TGCF. Beiyuan pined for his soulmate Helian Yi for 237 years across five lifetimes…and suffered so much because of it that he decided he was done. Wuxi (as Bai Wuchang) pined for Beiyuan for a really long time while Beiyuan was pining for another guy. And ultimately, what seals Beiyuan's reciprocation of Wuxi's feelings was how, despite having suffered so much back when he waited for Helian Yi, in the end, he was going to wait for Wuxi, too. He was gonna sit by that rock and wait for the sixty or seventy years it'll take him to see Wuxi again… (and then he didn't have to wait at all! Because Wuxi came back for him! 😭)
* Wuxi remembers very little of his Bai Wuchang lifetime, but what he does remember was about how much he had longed for that one person. "Even if I didn't say it for you to hear, I had to have recited it a million times in my heart as I watched your back."
* "The head won't remember, but the heart will."
* And on that note: it's one thing to pine after a guy. It's another thing to pine after a guy when the guy you're pining for is literally soulmates with someone else. Add one-sided love to the equation and you crank pining up 100%
* Wuxi's waiting game so steadfast not even Beiyuan & Helian Yi's soulmates status stood a chance lmao.
* No but seriously. Imagine pining for someone so strongly and so steadily that in the end you overrule a soulbond and he ditches his literal soulmate to run away with you. 😎

Hualian from Heaven Official’s Blessing
Characters: Hua Cheng and Xie Lian
Submission:
Hua Cheng has been in love with Xie Lian for 800 years before he could ever approach him as a possible romantic partner
“Your Highness, I am forever your most devoted believer.”
“You never know. I don’t care if anyone else is disappointed. But to some, the very existence of a certain person in this world is in itself hope.”
Xiyuan from Qi Ye/Lord Seventh
Characters: Jing Beiyuan and Wu Xi
Submission:
- Wu Xi waited for a whole year for Jing Beiyuan to return to the capital, and each day of it waited at a pavilion outside the city, just in case he happened to return that very day. Each day. For 365 days. - When he returned, Wu Xi gave Jing Beiyuan a jade ring, which in tradition meant that Jing Beiyuan would be betrothed to him. This was when they were both teenagers - Does Wu Xi tell Jing Beiyuan this? No. He simply gives a token of his love & affection and doesn't dare tell him yet, just pines - Ends up in his 20s when he finally, actually tells him the meaning of the ring and confesses
Submission 2:
Additional Xiyuan propaganda: If we're counting Wu Xi's life as the Soulhook Envoy, then there's also the "several endless centuries" where he watched Jing Qi as he did his duties while Jing Qi never looked back at him, plus another 63 years that Jing Qi spent by that rock.

Hot take: Wu Xi and Jing Beiyuan are such an odd couple because they don’t really understand eachother (like WenZhou do).
Hotter take: But like? They do? Wu Xi sees through Jing Beiyuan’s affectations to his deepest motivations and understands how much he feels bound by duty and circumstance, and even accepts the ‘worst’ parts of him.  While Jing Beiyuan knows exactly who Wu Xi is and later what Wu Xi wants (him) but just doesn’t necessarily approve because of said duty and circumstance.  Superficially, yeah there are misunderstandings (planned and unplanned), but they are actually very connected past even all the karmic trappings of “life.”
Hottest take: The grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one, but the grumpy one and the sunshine one aren’t the ones you think they are.

hmm.. very prophetic and bold of the 'first prince of a different surname' Jing Lianyu, courtesy Mingzhe, to be titled prince of 'southern peace' just for his son Beiyuan to kiss the south on its spiritual leader's mouth. made such peace with the south that he married into it. he said hold his wine, he isn't playing around 💖✨

underrated sable moment (tm) that is actually my favorite
can i just say real quick that we've been told several times about jing qi's affinity for kids and animals and this is such a pet parent thing that undoubtedly transfers really well to kids too- when they're being destructive you calmly minimize the damage and redirect them into destroying something more manageable (removing the book and letting it chew on the papers instead).

Much as I love Bingqiu, this one goes to Xiyuan for the following reasons (spoiler alert!!!):
305++ years is the minimum amount of time Wuxi pined, because before he was ever Bai Wuchang he'd already been waiting for his "fated one", and he'd been the Soulhook Envoy for "tens of thousands of years". But we don't know how long he's waited before became the Soulhook Envoy. I don't think even he knows how long he's waited.
Pining/waiting as a concept is central to Qi Ye's romantic development in a way that it isn't for most other stories. Beiyuan pined for his soulmate Helian Yi for 237 years across five lifetimes…and suffered so much because of it that he decided he was done. Bingqiu from SVSSS
Characters: Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu (Shen Yuan)
Submission:
Luo Binghe spends roughly 11 years pining for Shen Qingqiu before Shen Qingqiu gets a clue about his feelings. This includes 2-3 years in the Abyss and 5 years Shen Qingqiu has been dead. But the pining never stopped!
Not specifically romantic yearning, but Shen Qingqiu holding on to and taking care of Luo Binghe's sword while he was in the abyss, seemingly refusing to admit the "truth" that Luo Binghe was dead? Yeah, Shen Qingqiu was definitely feeling emotions he was not ready to acknowledge imo
Each day. !! "Lord Seventh" spoiler !!
.
.
.
.
.
.
I firmly believe that when Jing Beiyuan poisoned Wu Xi the next morning after they shared a bed, and Wu Xi was already unconscious on Beiyuan's lap, he took a moment to pull him closer and hug for the last time - he thought he'll die soon and never see Wu Xi again. So he paused. He indulged himself with a small moment of embracing this (his) too-fast-grown boy.
I imagine Jing Beiyuan hugging unconscious Wu Xi tightly for the last time before final parting, and whispering, burying his face into the carve of his neck: "You said you'd hate me forever... I know. Deserved".
Tiny addition:
Months later, when Wu Xi a bit offendedly asks whether Beiyuan at least feels sorry, he honestly answers: "For lying to you? Probably, yes. For sending you away from the danger? No. And never will."
And noone can convince me otherwise.

The thing about H*lian Yi is that he wasn't even the most competent person to be put on the throne. He was just the least incompetent.
And that's the forefront of all of his insecurities. He believes Beiyuan to be smarter than him which is why in the original timeline tells him to kill himself. He believes that because Beiyuan is smarter, he will eventually overthrow him and take the throne from right under his nose and is for that reason, terrified of him. (And Beiyuan is smarter which is why he doesn't want the throne).
He manages to find himself a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Beiyuan to I don't know ungay himself?
He doesn't trust anyone and we know this because in Tian Ye Ke, Zhou Zhishou has to fake his own death to reassure the Emperor that he isn't going to come back for revenge.
Jing Beiyuan has six lifetimes worth of proof that H*elian Yi doesn't trust him either and would rather him dead than to give up his power. He will always always choose power over the man he is supposedly in love with. So, he also decides that the only way to get out of this is to do what H*lian Yi wants - die. Except unlike Zhishou instead of faking his death, he chooses to go die in war (obviously).
Being the Emperor means having no one to whole heartedly trust, not even the people who have shown to you again and again that they do not want to overthrow you and are quite happy with you being over there instead of it being them.
This is why he is the least incompetent and not the most competent ruler. Because he refuses to trust the people willing to give their lives for him.
