how do the sharks in your universe deal with parasites like ommatokoita and copepods?
Oh, that's a very specific question hehe
Well, they developed arms, so naturally they got rid of the parasites with their bare hands. The parasites developed new tactics like attaching themselves to parts of the body that the sharkfolk probably couldn't reach. But then a sense of community blossomed, so they got rid of each other's parasites until they finally invented natural repellents to apply to their skin.
As they adapted to the surface of the sea, they never came into contact with these parasites again, but they found other problems to deal with on the surface, mainly related to fungi ~
In relation to the Ommatokoita, the civilization who have Greenland Sharks as their original ancestors, known as "Longevians", probably had a cultural and spiritual connection with this parasite. They believed that allowing themselves to be blinded by the parasite throughout their lives gave rise to new senses that perceived a hidden reality, saying that they could see the 'essence' of life forms and thus discover whether they were mentally or physically ill. With the rise to the surface of the sea and the arrival of the modern age, this slowly became folklore and the tradition was lost.
Tumblr media
The parasite that specifically affected the ancient Longevian sharkfolk has never been found in the wild again, only a few remain alive living in the eyes of elders who are more than five centuries old, probably extinguished by the abandonment of the practice.
Tumblr media
I wrote some more details in the alt text of the illustrations if you want to check ~ I hope you enjoy! 🦈✨ I wanted to thank whoever asked this question! I've been stuck with art for a few days due to my declining mental health and this has inspired me to draw a little again! I will answer the other previous questions soon ~

I'm just reblogging this post so I can say that I still intend to answer other questions I've been asked about my sharkfolk universe! I'm very happy that people are interested in what I'm creating, I like that! 🦈✨
It's taking me a while to reply because I wanted to illustrate these questions rather than just write huge texts like I always do haha
Thanks a lot for all!!✨
If dolphins were still alive in your universe, how would the shark species react to gay dolphins since homosexuality is not very well documented in sharks afaik.
Although there is still no evidence of this in sharks, in this world-building, after the sharkfolk adapted to inhabit the surface and developed the civilization known as the Waiohana, forms of expression flourished in the most diverse ways, just as happened with human beings in the past.
But unlike us, throughout the entire history of the Waiohana, there has never been any person, book, culture or religion that has judged the diversity of expressions of love, sexuality, gender or identity as something sinful or unnatural. Therefore, it would never cross the minds of the sharkfolk to judge in any way the sexual diversity of a cetaceanfolk, should they exist in this particular world-building.
At the same time, during the modern age, something like the LGBTQ+ community with its organizations and symbols never existed, because no one ever had to fight just to exist. So no one has ever assigned a name or title to who they are, simply everyone expresses their authentic self without fear!
Of course, it's not perfect; there are still some problems related to xenophobia between species due to vestiges of territorial instinct, but nothing as devastating as wars. That's an issue they've been improving over the ages.
There are a few things I thought I'd explore, in case you're curious. For example, I like the idea of the absence of sexual dimorphism in sharks, and I wanted to reflect this in my sharkfolk, that is, the bodies of females and males are identical in appearance, differing only in their reproductive organs. There are no breasts or hair on their bodies, and their voices also tend to be androgynous. I also thought that their bodies don't have something like the "Libido" that mammals had, so their relationships and family formations revolve more around social connections than sexual ones.
Tumblr media
But if the LGBTQ+ community existed in this "Sharktopia", this is how I imagine my three shark band characters would identify, in case you're curious:
⭐Roberto/Rocky, the male great hammerhead shark, he would identify as Bisexual! ⭐Tiago/Tyson the tiger shark, is actually a female, but has always seen himself as masculine and would identify as Non-binary! ⭐Arielle/Aria, the female Zebra shark, she would identify as Asexual and as an extra curiosity, she is also neurodivergent!
That's it! I hope you enjoy it.✨
(I wrote too much again, sorry)

Continuing with the same previous idea of gamifying shark characteristics. 🎮✨
What if sharks' electro-sense could be used to find hidden magical treasures? They would be able to sense the electromagnetic field of objects or enemies emanating some kind of energy. ⚡️🦈⚡️
🔎I think this and this video are cool on this topic!
---
I was unsure of what magical treasure I could make buried and I had these ideas until I finally chose the human skull with a jewel as my favorite! 💀✨
"The Dreamfaders" is what I thought my sharkfolk called the humans, long gone beyond time ~ At some point I can explain why they called us that.

I hope you like it and that it inspires you in some way about sharks! 🦈✨

Haha don't worry! It would be accurate to say that Astrea's art actually resembles my own artistic style, because I'm the art director of Astrea hehe
It was one of my first experiences with the complete art direction of a game, I hope you enjoyed it, it was a great challenge!
I'm really glad you liked Cellarius, it was a lot of fun designing this big silly boy! 🦈✨

Posting only the art I made inspired by this question on tumblr! Hope you like it!
I made this sketch for an idea I had a long time ago exploring the idea of the famous myth that sharks "smell a drop of blood in 2 million liters of water" and become uncontrollably frenzy.
This scene depicts a distant event in the past history of my shark civilization.🦈✨
---
Edit: I thought it would be cool to explore the sharks' electro-sense for gamification ideas if you want to see it too! 🦈✨

How do your sharks react to blood in the water? Hopefully they have out evolved the need for the feeding frenzy of their ancestors.
Sharks having a blood frenzy is just another myth from Jaws. I recommend watching these two videos about it!
youtube
youtube
Another detail is that the sense of smell is not the best sense of sharks, for them to smell the substance has to flow through their noses, they would have to be very close. What most attracts the attention of sharks is the sound of fish struggling in the water, which they can hear almost a kilometer away. Check out this little noise experiment!
instagram
They are also attracted to colors that contrast with the blue of the sea, such as yellow or things that shine like fish scales.
instagram
And finally, my sharkfolk are civilized, so if any of them smelled blood in the water, the first thing they would think is that someone was hurt and they would go to them for help, not to eat them! hehe
---
This reminded me of an old idea I had a long time ago and I decided to sketch it out, a representation of a distant event in the past of the story about the shark civilization! 🦈✨

Hmm, what do you all think of "The Dreamfarers"? 🎸🦈🎶
Tumblr media
Something I'm still very undecided about is the name of the indie band of my three young sharks from a retro universe. It's such a simple thing, but it's perplexing me, perhaps because I want something very specific. In this case, a marine element + a cosmic element. 🦈✨
I wish you could all help me with this creative insight! At the moment I have these ideas, do you like them, do any of them sound cool?
🎵 Dreaming Sharks, Dream Divers, Dream Shiver, Astral Dreamers.
These names would be more ideas for songs they would make:
🎶 Pastel Summer, Reef Dreams, Stranded Song, Wreck Echoes, Ocean Wish, Astral Sailors, Stargazing Sharks, Sharks also Dream, Whispering Waves, Emotional Frenzy, The Rainbow After the Storm.
What I do know is that their essence is about chasing dreams with a cosmic touch, magical ocean and optimism. I created these three characters inspired by the triple idea of the tarot: Sun, Moon and Star.
☀️ Sun as ruler of Tiago/Tyson the tiger shark, someone warm, who inspires courage and determination.
🌙 Moon as ruler of Roberto/Rocky the great hammerhead shark, someone mysterious, who inspires feeling and empathy.
⭐ And the Star as ruler of Arielle/Aria the zebra shark, someone dreamy, who inspires imagination and faith.
If you'd like to know a bit more about the three of them, you can read about them here.
Someone once told me that imagining a scene with my characters could help me understand the essence that could lead me to the ideal band name. So I remembered what I had imagined:
"Previously, it was just Roberto and Tiago, but they were looking for a voice for their songs. One starry night on the beach, Roberto witnessed a strange shooting star that didn't reflect his image in the sea. Despite this, he was inspired to make a wish.
The event reminded him of his van, which he affectionately calls "Starfall". After going for a drive with Tiago, a synchronicity event led them to Arielle, whom they found singing alone at a local karaoke bar. Since then, Roberto likes to call her "Lucky Star", the one who inspires them to hope in the face of adversity.
And one day, when Roberto and Tiago were undecided about how to name the band, Arie surprised them with an ideal name idea!"
The problem is that I don't know what idea Arie had! haha
Sorry for writing so much, I've always had a hard time summarizing things…

I know this is a weird question, but what exactly do the bigger sharks eat in your world? I know Rocky is a Great Hammerhead and they (as a species) are known to be other shark eaters, so is there like an alternative meat that they eat, or do they just stick to stingrays and bony fish?
That's a curious question, and I was quite inspired when I thought about how to answer it!✨
In the past, they used to hunt wild fish, but with the advent of the modern age, they stopped fishing and adapted entirely to the practice of pisciculture. 🐟✨
Tumblr media
In a hypothetical future on this Earth, fish are incredibly larger and more abundant. Some have been domesticated, just as we humans used to do, and are treated with deep respect.
In order not to cover too much, I've focused only on the fish that have been domesticated for consumption in the region where my main characters live, called "Santa Maré".
Tumblr media
They are the descendants of species we know, such as Arapaima, Tuna, Tilapia, Sardines, Anchovies, Salmon, Cod, Octopus, Squid, Crab and Shrimp.
These are some of the typical dishes of the Santa Maré region, most of which are variations on recipes handed down from the ancient human presence that marked this region a thousand years ago. Lots of seafood-based dishes with a spicy touch! 🌶️✨
Tumblr media
Some of these dishes were inspired by real recipes from my country such as: Casquinha de Siri, Tuna Poke, Vatapá, Bobó de Camarão, Moqueca de Peixe, Octopus Rice, Acarajé, Cod Baked in Olive Oil, Cod Croquettes and the sweet dessert called Manjar, which is a coconut pudding with plum syrup!
Things like corn, wheat and other fruits, vegetables and animals domesticated by humans disappeared millions of years ago. So I wondered what other options they could find to use as the main ingredients.
Tumblr media
Algae Flour, Palm Oil, Palm Butter, Coconut Milk, Palm Sugar, Domesticated Snake Eggs, Sea Salt. In the Santa Maré region, palm is widely used as the main ingredient, while other regions may prefer ingredients based on algae, for example.
Some domesticated fruits and vegetables are only used to season and enhance the flavor of dishes, but they don't make much difference to their bodies. They eat several meals a day, and food is plentiful in this civilization, so the great sharks wouldn't need to devour their friends to satisfy their hunger, hehe.
And speaking of Roberto/Rocky, my great hammerhead shark, if he gets really hungry, a Tuna Poke is enough to make him very happy and satiated! 🍣✨

in your opinion, what are the CUTEST sharks? (You *could* say “all of them”, but I’d like to know of specific sharks to look up!)
whale sharks are one of my favorites, they’re so gentle and I love their spots!
Definitely the species of shark that I think is the cutest is the Blacktip Reef Shark hehe ✨
Tumblr media
I like how little, elegant and charming they are, with their little fins that look like they're stained with ink.
They were my inspiration for creating my little mascot "Requino", a fictional "Pinktip Cosmic Shark". Here is some artworks I made of it! 🦈✨
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other sharks that I think are cute are: ⭐Lemon Sharks and Tiger Sharks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⭐I recommend watching these two videos where there is interaction with these two species!

One detail that makes me like tiger sharks is that they sometimes have a small detail in their eyes that resembles the white part of the sclera, which gives them a unique expressiveness!✨ ⭐Blue Sharks too!! Look this silly boys!

hi! stumbled upon you with the humans post and honestly it would look like an awesome tattoo. anyway, I'm in a dnd group with homebrew races, classes, background ect. I decided to go with a humanoid shark race that resembles a black tip reef shark and was wondering if you have any interesting facts about them? sorry if it's weird thing to ask
Oh that's an interesting shark question! 🦈✨
Over the years I've seen a few articles on the curiosities of this species of shark, these are the ones I remember:
Tumblr media
⭐They Have Social Behavior: As they are a small species, it makes sense that they would group together in small groups with complex social systems to protect themselves from predators. In a fantasy inspiration, they would probably always be united in large families and live in tropical regions such as beaches and reefs in large houses or villages.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
⭐They Have Best Friends: It's a recent discovery and apparently happens in several species of sharks, they are usually always in pairs, always of the same sex, two females or two males, they always swim together and there is even the hypothesis that they will defend their friend. There have been cases of scientists or divers having to interact with a shark to remove a tag or hook, and another shark biting the diver lightly, which could be that shark's faithful friend.
youtube
⭐Prey for the Great Hammerhead Shark: Great Hammerhead Sharks have often been seen preying on these little sharks, being their natural predator. So a blacktip reef character could certainly feel intimidated by a Grante Hammerhead character, but nothing would stop them from being friends! Imagine a big hammerhead shark protecting his little blacktip reef friend from other bullying hammerheads sharks hehe
Tumblr media
⭐Shy, Slippery and Full of Anxiety: In personality they are extremely shy and insecure, they are very fast and slippery, difficult to catch.
Tumblr media
⭐They are viviparous: which means that the female becomes pregnant with an umbilical cord and all!
That's it! If other people know any more curious information about blacktip reef sharks, feel free to comment on this post!✨

do the sharks in your universe go through parthenogenesis? if they do, do they have control over the pregnancy or does it happen at random?
That's a very interesting question! I thought about it and yes, parthenogenesis happens to the sharks in my universe. One of the characters, the zebra shark called Aria, is the fruit of parthenogenesis.
As for the cause, even for our science today, it is still unknown how this works or whether the female shark has control over it in any way. It is not known whether the females trigger the phenomenon or whether it happens spontaneously. I haven't found much information either; it's something very new to us. Recently, a stingray in captivity became pregnant by parthenogenesis, for example. Stingrays belong to the same family as sharks.
As there are few answers at the moment, I decided to take inspiration from a fantasy idea about this. What I'm going to tell you now is a fictional vision of the origin of parthenogenesis:
My shark people theorize that parthenogenesis is a kind of "Shadow of Decline", an ancestral ability inherited by female sharks that withstood mass extinction events in the primordial ages of the planet.
They theorize that there were probably times when the male shark population declined, so the females who were able to adapt to create "backups" of their genes through cloned daughters prevailed, while those who lacked this adaptation became extinct.
In short, they theorize that females, in situations of stress and prolonged absence of male sharks, trigger a clone as a type of genetic reserve. As she gets older, she transfers the responsibility to her cloned daughter, who may have a better chance of finding a partner to pass on her genes and ensure the survival of the species.
In the context of civilization, the conditions for parthenogenesis to take place are still unknown. But my sharks link the phenomenon to a stress response and prolonged life without producing offspring.
Maybe it's not a good comparison, but it would be a kind of menstrual cycle that instead of happening monthly, happens randomly between 10~20 years after sexual maturity. (I used as inspiration a female blacktip reef shark that developed a fetus in her uterus after 10 years of living in an aquarium without the presence of males).
Modern shark society offers full support to females who don't want to go ahead with parthenogenesis and are given full assistance to carry out abortions. But there are also many females who choose to accept the phenomenon, go ahead with the pregnancy and become the mothers of these children, while some females give birth but hand the newborn over to "kindergartens", which act like orphanages/schools/universities that provide full support for the child to grow up and become independent or be adopted.
A reminder that children born from parthenogenesis will always be girls and with identical genes to their mother. Because of this, some females are afraid to go ahead with parthenogenesis, as they fear that their daughters will suffer from the same physical or mental health problems as their mothers.
In the case of zebra shark Aria, her mother has a neurodivergence and she feared that her daughter would suffer as much as she did, but she decided to go ahead with her daughter's parthenogenesis. Despite having the same neurodivergence, she views it with a completely different approach to her mother, which gives her hope and support.
That's it! I'm sorry if I've written too much or if my English is strange, I got carried away, maybe I'm missing more details, but that's what I've thought so far. Any other ideas to enrich this would be welcome!
It's a very interesting creative exercise to imagine how parthenogenesis would be viewed in a civilized society like ours.

Hii, your "HUMANS" piece is awesome! Disregard this if it's convoluted, but I really like the whole piece with the text included! Would it be too much to ask for a version or the shirt with the text included? (I mean this genuinely, I hope I don't come off as sarcastic or anything;; I don't want to waste your time!)
Of course! You can find it on my RedBubble and my INPRNT, if you like! ✨
