A large part of what makes the Lunar Chronicles such a compelling series is the diverse cast of characters. We have 9 protaganists. Of these characters, five are female, four are white, and several have physical otherness- Cinder’s cyborg parts, Winter’s scars, Wolf’s enhancements. Marissa Meyer knows damn well what she’s doing, and she’s doing a damn good job of it.

So WHY am I seeing WHITEWASHING among the fandom!?

A personal habit of mine is to scroll through the fanart tag. I’ve seen drawings that at first, I mistake for Emilie, or Cress with darker hair, but a quick tag-check proves that, no, this is Cinder. One specific occasion, I saw a fancast list, with Elizabeth Olson listed as Cinder, and Harry Styles listed as Kai. I couldn’t find the post, but it was bad.

I would like to make clear that I am a white female. When I first read Cinder upon its release, I had little to no knowledge of Asian culture, and thought Cinder’s first name was Lihn. Before you attack me, bear in mind that I was a fifth grader. I learned as I grew, and the more I learned, the more I loved. I loved Cinder for being brave. I loved Iko for being bold. I loved Kai for being strong. I loved all of these characters because their good qualities reminded me of the person I want to be, and I related to them. I didn’t even CONSIDER their race in this factor. I didn’t love Winter because she was a ‘foreign beauty’, I love her because she’s exhibiting tremendous grace and kindness under pressure.

I know that it seems like I’m rambling at this point, so I’m going to attempt to wrap this up in a neat little bow. Pertaining to Cinder directly, I have some cues that I’d like to tune you in to:

-She was sheltered in Europe for eight years. Despite this, they found someone from the Eastern Commonwealth to house her. Why wouldn’t she have just stayed in Europe, unless it made more sense for her to be somewhere where she would blend in? -In Fairest, Channary is described as being tan, and having eyes that turn upward, as though she’s always smiling. It depends on how you interpret these features, but it can be assumed that underneath their glamours, the Blackburns appear of Asian descent. (Forgive for my broad use of the term Asian, but I don’t have a specific country to narrow in on here) -Whenever Cinder is out and about in New Beijing, specifically, the marketplace scene at the beginning of the first book, no one looks at her funny because of her race. It’s all about whether they know she’s cyborg or not

Representation in novels is important. Like, hella important. I understand that I am privileged. I know that nine out of ten of the 'Young Adult Bestsellers’ feature a 'generic white girl who is not pretty enough to be beautiful, but pretty enough to be deemed nice looking, but beauty comes from within, so it doesn’t matter anyway! uwu’ The Lunar Chronicles do a fantastic job creating representation and relatable characters for anyone who reads it. Please don’t take that representation away. Anyone who loves these books has a mental image of the characters. I’m not going to tell you that your mental image is wrong. I don’t want to tell you what to draw, I’m just asking to please, please be conscious of the content that you release.
